It is told by the locals that the area of Kinderdijk originated because of a tsunami!

That happened during the St. Elizabeth-flood which was in 1421 when a North-Western storm stirred up the river water until tsunami heights. The dikes collapsed and the river water of the Lek came in ... so a dike has to be built to protect the area.

The name of Kinderdijk (Childs dike) must have been translated by one of the several legends; it is about a child within a cradle that struggled on the wild waves and was kept in balance... by a cat! The cradle stranded on a special slope spot of the dike which has been named then Childs dike ...

So all cats around the windmills are protected and honoured as the "windmill-cats", the descendants of the stranded cat in the cradle, living in the catshelter, or Kattenmand.

Houses and windmills, they can be the same thing.

Several windmills in the Kinderdijk area are actually homes. Yes, you read it well, living in a windmill still excists in the Netherlands and when there is a sign that states "no trespassing" please do respect the fact that people are actually living in this peculiar house. You wouldn't like it either if masses of tourists barch through your garden.
