    LEIDENS EFFECTIVE TRANSPORT FACILITIES

    by richard4 Updated Apr 16, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

leiden is blessed with an effective transport hub connecting it with amsterdam and den haag and beyond effectively, making using leiden as your base to explore the region very easy.

getting in to leiden is very very easy, just follow the signs at schiphol to the trains, get your ticket and find your platform, usually 5 or 6,grab your train and a journey time of approx 20 minutes is all it takes right to leiden centraal station, taxis are directly outside the main terminal to your left up a ramp and can whisk you quickly to your hotel or whatever.

For our family of four, it was easiest to purchase a bus card ("nationale strippen kaart") at the post office. This one card worked on the streetcar in Amsterdam and on the bus from the train station to our hotel in Leiden. Much simpler than fumbling with change for the bus.

travelling to the Netherlands on KLM or any other airline, is a breeze, the timetables are convenient, the travel time is only about an hour from Birmingham international, and Schiphol airport is so easy to roam around sometimes i forget i'm abroad.
At schiphol the train station is on site already, just follow the signs to the ticket office and then your chosen platform, typically platforms 5 or 6, and away to Leiden, the journey time is barely 20 minutes so your there in no time no worrys.

    Leiden Central

The Leiden Central train station is very centrally located. (Maybe that explains the name...) Arriving there, you're just a short walk from the city center. If you had layover there of a couple of hours or more, you could easily check out the city and grab a bite to eat.

The most common way to get around

by annase Updated Sep 4, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bikes are quickest and easiest way to get around Leiden. Everyone has a bike and it is so flat, it's hardly exhausting at all. What can be more daunting is though, finding a space for your bike at the station or alternatively finding it when you come back... ;-) Not that people necessaily nick bikes a lot, but remembering where you put it and finding it amongst the thousands of bikes that look exactly the same might be a bit of a challenge!

Be aware that there is no cycling on the pedestrianised shopping street - right in the middle of the town.

Leiden is a half an hour journey from Amsterdam. The area around the station is not as picturesque as the rest of Leiden. Walk down Stationsweg in the directon of the University quarter to see the nicest areas.

On foot or by bike. Don't go into town with your own car, but park outside the city and take one of the free buses into town.

You can hire a bike for only 7,-- euro at the railway station and get to know the city. The historical centre is quiet large, so it may be inconvenient to walk. And by bike you can go see the countryside too, for instance you can go to the beach, see the forest area of Voorschoten and Wassenaar or the lovely polders of Zoeterwoude.

    Cycling around Leiden

A good idea is to rent a bike at Leiden Central Station. Stop first at the Tourist Office in Stationsstraat (about 100 m from the station towards the center).
When you come out of the main entrance of Leiden Central Station, turn left and you'll find this place where you can buy or rent a bike or have it repaired or stalled.

  • Leiden is easily reached by...

    by Aphrodite21 Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Leiden is easily reached by bus or by train. There are trains that go from Schiphol in Amsterdam, from the city center of Amsterdam, and also from The Hague. My only caution is to make sure that you check if you're getting on the sneltrein or the stoptrein. When I was taking the train from The Hague to Leiden, I got on the stoptrein by mistake and it took twice as long. Those types of trains make a whole bunch of little stops in between as opposed to the sneltrein which makes the major stops.
You can take the bus in Leiden but I find it's a very walkable city. All the major sights are easily reached on foot. You can also try getting around by bicycle but I would recommend that you practise a bit first. I tried getting around by bike during a busy section and it was a little bit unnerving because I'm not used to riding a bike. I'm surprised I made it through without falling.

    Parking near the city center

by dutchboycalledjan Written Feb 22, 2009

Parking in Leiden is difficult and expensive. There are large parking areas around the city. The one near the Noordeinde / Haagweg (direction Voorschoten) is most convenient, as it offers a shuttle services to and from the city center and/or you can walk. You can also try to park in the small streets around the city center; it is usually free.

    Schuitjevaart Canal boat tour

    by pieter_jan_v Written May 19, 2013

Leiden is ideal for a canal boat tour. The city waterways played a great role in transportation of goods to the city in the old days. Via the canals you can travel through Leiden in a relaxed way in just an hour.

The terminal of Schuitjevaart canal boat tours is mid-town at the corner of the Stille Rijn and the Stille Mare.

Sailing on your own: Bootjes en Broodjes

    by pieter_jan_v Written Jun 9, 2013

Bootjes en Broodjes is a company that rents small electrical boats, so you can explore the Leiden canals on your own. It's also possible to hire a guide who will explain the Leiden ins and outs.

Beside the above "bootjes" side, there is the "broodjes" part of the company. If you want, a full catering can be supplied from breakfast through dinner and all in between snacks, high tea and drinks too.
