Restaurants

Tavern de Oude Sluis: Tavern de Oude Sluis

Tavern de Oude Sluis: Tavern de Oude Sluis, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  Translates to The Old Sluice. It's a pub with a billiard (or so it says on the window) just in front of the St. Peter & Paul church. If you sit on the terrace outside, you have a great view of the handworked bridge that in summer season opens and closes all the time to let...

Coffee Club: Coffee Club

Coffee Club: Coffee Club, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  In the new part of Leidschendam you find this restaurant just outside a shopping mall. Along a rather large pond there are these modern pavillions, each being a separate restaurant. We chose the Coffee Club, a kind of brasserie-like restaurant with an outside terrace along...

Nightlife

Theatre Camuz: Theatre Camuz

Theatre Camuz: Theatre Camuz, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  A small theatre for 101 audience that looks quite modern on the inside. I'm guessing it must be quite fun to watch the smaller Dutch theatre productions here.

Shopping

't Kaaswinkeltje: Cheese shop

't Kaaswinkeltje: Cheese shop, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  You wonder why this nice looking cheeseshop is closed on a Thursday afternoon. Maybe they were on holiday?

Dam Apotheek: Pharmacist

Dam Apotheek: Pharmacist, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  The pharmacist side of the building is better maintained than the other side (probably a pizza takeaway?)

Damlaan: Shopping street

Damlaan: Shopping street, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  The main shopping area is in the new part of Leidschendam. Obviously, the old part has been neglected but therefore all the more enjoyable to stroll through. It is a busy traffic road too, though.

Warung Ventje: Indonesian food

Warung Ventje: Indonesian food, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  Another shop on Damplein is an Indonesian take-away. Warung means shop and Ventje means Little Guy.

Istanbul market: Turkish shop

Istanbul market: Turkish shop, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  On the otherwise quite dreary Damplein in the old part of Leidschendam, there are a few exotic shops. Which I always love! This is Istanbul market, where you can buy Halal meat and warm Turkish pizza's. Yummy!

Antiques: Antiques

Antiques: Antiques, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  Just looked nice, with all the goods presented outside the shop as well as in. Nice place for browsing!

Leidsenhage: Leidsenhage shopping mall

Leidsenhage: Leidsenhage shopping mall, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  A modern shopping area, not quite a mall as it isn't all covered. Has all the well known shopping chains. Very large parking area around it for free.

Local Customs

Boat people

Boat people, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  One of the main attractions at a bridge may not necessarily be the boats themselves. It's the people on them, that are often cause for amusement.

What a job!

What a job!, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  Two sluice or bridge wardens spend the whole day walking to and fro two bridges to open and close them by hand. I'm thinking about once every half hour.

Audience

Audience, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  The opening and closing of the sluice and bridges attracts quite an audience. Although I suspect they are locals, passing time on the benches and amusing themselves by chatter and a glance now and then at the passing boats.

In the sluice

In the sluice, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  The boats enter the sluice. The bridge and sluice close behind them. Then they wait... not long!

There goes!

There goes!, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  The bridge opens after the bridge warden turns a wheel.

Closing the sluice

Closing the sluice, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  But before the bridge is opened, the sluice needs to be opened too. Also by hand!

Bridge

Bridge, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  The bridges are worked by hand.

Warnings Or Dangers

Don't park your boat in the wrong spot!

Don't park your boat in the wrong spot!, Leidschendam

ATLC Says:  'Wachtplaats uitsluitend voor de doorgaande vaart' means as much as that you can't moor off your boat there unless you're waiting for the sluice to open.
