Most people try to rush Noordwijk aan Zee on a budget so they end up missing some of the highlights in a whirlwind. The key to seeing Noordwijk aan Zee properly is a game plan, you must know what you want to see before setting out. Keep in mind that it is more than just the beach. Before we visited Noordwijk aan Zee we saw on a city map that the small town of Noordwijk aan Zee is divided into three areas - the small historical old village, the beach area and the more residential area in the new part of the town. We visited the village multiple times during our stay, and hiked our way through some areas.

Our main hike started from our apartment at the Koningin Astrid Boulevard all the way at eastern tip of the village. Walking the boulevard is just great, on one side the beautiful beach and the sea and on the other side some amazing beach houses and mansions. At some point we went to the historical old center and passed the very famous Huis ter Duin hotel. Via the street De Grent we arrived at the city center and admired some cozy and historical facades of the houses and the beautiful reformed church. Of course, walking the beach is part of the experience and we arrived there at the most western tip of the village at the lighthouse. Via the beach (and a nice and cold refreshments at a beach club) we returned to our apartment. Was this hike the real Noordwijk aan Zee?

    Hiking - Go by foot!

Noordwijk aan Zee is a small village with a lot of history indeed. A place of pilgrimage Noordwijk’s history dates back to 2000BC. The compact town of Noordwijk aan Zee was founded around 1200 as a fishing village and is easy to get around, and the ideal place to explore on foot. Noordwijk aan Zee is the Netherlands, and yet it is a culture unto itself. It was an small fishing village and its legacy of monuments can be admired in the streets to this day. Historical buildings to stroll around include the lighthouse and the KNRM rescue station. Furthermore it has a reformed church (1647) with a pulpit from the 17th century. Time to explore it!

We can honestly state that the best way to explore Noordwijk aan Zee is by foot and the second best way is also by foot! Besides giving you the opportunity to roam the narrow streets and the main square, it is the quickest way too. If you really want to, you can cross the city in approximately 20 minutes. Remember that sometimes it might be quicker (and nicer!) to take a few short-cuts into picturesque alleys instead of following the masses of tourists that only walk in one straight line from the beach to the church and back again. Maybe this is easy for us to say as we stayed for a longer period of time and not like most of the tourists only for one day. But even when your stay is rather short, do try to get away from the crowds and just have a 'look around'. Noordwijk aan Zee is simply a perfect place to walk for an hour and pretending to know where you are.

Hiking - Kind of straight forward.

Take time to meander - losing yourself in the maze of alleys, streets and lanes is one of the old and ancient's towns principal pleasures. How different is this in a sea sight resort like Noordwijk aan Zee. This little village does not have streets that wind and wander with no discernible order or object. It is kind of a straight on forward, but still fun to do, don’t you worry. After our stroll we rewarded ourselves with a cool glass of beer or wine for our effort! We learned that you won´t do justice to the entire village of Noordwijk aan Zee whenever you won´t visit other parts than just the main sights at the beach area. So ... do meander, because the cluster of sights around the beach are nice, but the more secret pleasures of the hushed backstreets near the main church Gereformeerde Kerk are just entrancing.

When strolling through the heart of the small village, you can literally sense its history. The small lanes of the old town, which lies directly at near the beach area, communicate the feeling of past ages. Splendid town residences and chapter houses are worthy of closer scrutiny, as are some of the more beautiful facades are hidden discretely behind the church. Moreover the main square with its lively hustle and bustle is never far away. All this may seem very though as finding your way in Noordwijk aan Zee might be difficult, but in really distances are very short and the signs will help you in getting around. Enjoy!
