If you do not like the dolls'...

Favorite thing: If you do not like the dolls' house feeling one can get when visiting Amsterdam, Rotterdam surely is a place one should visit.Because much of the city center was destroyed during WW II, the empty city heart was filled with new buildings, some architectural gems, like the cube houses. These cube houses, close to the city centre are just what the name suggests - houses in the shape of up-turned cubes. One of them is a museum. The shopping mall in the centre of the city is an experience to itself. Large squares, a shopping gutter and lots of open space.
Rotterdam like Amsterdam has a huge natural harbour. It is known to the Dutch as 'the Manhattan on the Maas', as it straddles the Maas River, and has a fairly new high rise skyline of office blocks and a buzzing commercial district. It's port, Europoort, is the largest harbour in the world, and it is an important site for the exportation and importation of goods.
Though not as old as Amsterdam, Rotterdam does have a certain character of it's own and boast many tourist sites.

    The Cube Houses

Favorite thing: Worth a visit inside! Yes, one of many of these apartments is a kind of a museum. You can take a look inside of the cube apartment to get an idea of the interior.
You can even buy one, although the prices are 300,000 Euro and above :-)

    Cubic houses

Favorite thing: Coming from the river Meuse and having passed the white house, this is how the cubic houses appear, kinda put away in a corner. Coming from the other side, over the big square, it is quite a different sight.

Fondest memory: In front of the cubic houses is a little harbour, and a shipyard. This is part of the old Rotterdam and I do like visiting here.

Favorite thing: What else must you see then the boats in the harbour, the famous Swan Bridge, The Euromast (tower), the skyscrapers and the Cubic formded houses? For 1,70 EURO you can visit one of the Cubic Houses (in most of these people actually live, but one is turned into a show house). For more information visit my travellogue.

Fondest memory: Go to the shopping centre and wonder about all the modern formed buildings and enjoy shopping ofcourse! I really enjoyed the market in Rotterdam too. It's near subway/tram & train station 'Blaak' and the cubic houses.

Favorite thing: Not sure we ever found the true centre of Rotterdam as there didn't seem to be much there.

Weather was dreadful grey and rainy.

Fondest memory: The best hot chocolate I have ever drunk anywhere - went back for a second one - this was in a shopping centre

    Cube Houses!

    by IceBear7 Written Mar 3, 2003

Favorite thing: The weirdest and most wonderful houses I have ever seen. I wanted to move in here immediately!!

There are around 40 of the Cube Houses, one is a show cube where you get an impression what it's like. There are three floors, connected by some extremely narrow steps, and the floors are the only thing that's normal. You must not be a giant, or you must wear a hard hat all the time. You must like experimenting with furniture - coz you hardly find anything that fits.
I guess you have great neighbours, all as crazy as you are. And great location in the city center!!

    Fondest memory: Fotos will follow

    Cube Houses

    Inside the Cube House

Favorite thing: Inside the cube house it is almost disorienting. There are many stairs to climb. It is not a practical house to live in - if you ask me.

Fondest memory: Walking through town and the park.

    The crayon and the cubic

    Cubic houses

Favorite thing: This is how the houses appear to you when coming from the other side. At the right is the building called the crayon, because of its shape.
