Bazar: eastern cuisine
Turkish, Moroccan and eastern cuisine in general. Everything I tried was delicious. Authentic atmosphere and beautifully decorated. The music was also well chosen for this kind of restaurant. Every employee was very helpful except from one specific waitress (but you can get that anywhere, right?) Be sure to make reservations.
Bram Ladage: Voted among the best french fries in NL
French Fries are originally from Belgium and so, they also became popular in the Netherlands. Confused? No problem, the most important thing is that the dutch love fries. Many dishes you get in restaurants come with them, more than you are used to in other countries. They have earned their place in the rich dutch fast food culture. And the temple of this culture is Bram Ladage. This chain is renowned for very good french fries in the Rotterdam area. The variety of sauces is not really high, but beside fries, also other fast food snacks (burgers, frikandel etc.) are offered.
Favorite Dish: I had their fries with pindasaus. Nothing to die for, but indeed good fries!
Soup Factory: Is this your cup of soup ?
On our walk in the citycentre of Rotterdam we saw this souprestaurant 'The Soup Factory'. When I red in the newspapers about these souprestaurants for the first time, being a souplover, I would like to have such a place in my own hometown.
Most soups you can take as maincourse, but also in combination with other snacks. A pity we didn't need any meal around the time of our visit, so we had only a quick look to come back another time.
Favorite Dish: The variety of soups makes difficult to make your choice. They all look great, not the ordinary stuff, but recipes from all over the world. There was a special corner for toppings to add at your own choice: parsley, croutons, garlic, sweet pepper, onion, crème fraiche.
Shabu shabu: Sushi, eat all you can
Eat all you can for € 16 at lunch or € 19,50 at dinner. But beware: you have to pay for what you have ordered but did not eat.
You order a max. of 8 different dishes per person in one go, but you can go on doing that until you have had enough.
At lunch I made it to 10 dishes.
Favorite Dish: The sushi were nice and so was the seaweed salad. I was less charmed by the tempura. Too greasy and the vegetable sushi was unexpectedly heavy. Ask for the pickled ginger because it isn't served automatically.
Brasserie Staal: Lunch at the WTC
A brasserie inside the World Trade Center in Rotterdam. Modern, stylish atmosphere, packed with business people. It has a downstairs/outside terrace. Good meeting place.
Favorite Dish: Great tomato soup. Fresh, with basil and cream. Huge slices of bread. Dark, wholemeal. In my case with filet americain. Although the spread was not meagre, the bread was still almost too thick. But tasty.
ZIN Spijzen: Tapas and lounging
ZIN is a colourful restaurant where you can meet up for drinks, lounging, lunches and dinners. You can also do a tapas-formula.
We had a 3-course tapas meal for € 26,50 per person. I was a bit disappointed with the variety and flavours. Little cooking went into it. However, the Dutch restaurant IENS (www.iens.nl) does mention plenty of guest reviews that are 'good' or 'excellent'. So I suppose the quality differs a bit.
The service was excellent, very kind en prompt. Every table has a bamboo stick with a red painted end. If you put the red end up, on your table, staff will come and ask what you need. Effective!
The restaurant is easily located near theatre, concert hall, cinema and shops.
Favorite Dish: The four of us started on a large dish with various little bowls containing tuna salad, egg salad, chorizo sausage, feta cheese salad, small spring rolls, and very very good serrano ham. With bread, aoili and tapenade.
The main course was a similar large dish with little bowls: meat balls in tomatosauce, mushrooms in garlic, mushrooms in truffle sauce, chicken sate sticks, japanese sate, fried mini chorizos and a large salad and excellent fries.
For dessert a large plate for four containing a few miniature desserts like strawberry icecream, chocolate brownie, vanilla cream with passionfruit gelee, white chocolate mousse.
Rodin: Free lunch (for me)
Rodin is a great café-restaurant. For years I get the Rotterdam Tourist Office newsletters by email and to my surprise I was the winner of a price of a campaign that's a part of the newsletter. To my surprise it was a Euro 50 lunch at Rodin, at that moment unknown to me, although I must have passed the restaurant in the past.
So, at an exceptional warm october Saturday we went to Rotterdam to enjoy the price for one thing. We were warm welcomed and we took a seat at the front window. The staff was really helpful in filling in a special menu. My wife had the day's special lunch with matching wines and I went for a BLT club Sandwich. We finished our visit with a nice piece of cake and drinks.
I really recommend this restaurant for a lunch and BTW, the dinner menu looks great as well.

This is a very nice place, run by a local girl who works her butt off to keep the place going 7/7. She has a great love for coffee and tea and it shows... Best coffee in the country!
Favorite Dish: Latte Macchiato!!!!
La Borsa: Great pasta and always something going on
It's located right on the Coolsingel, the city's artery. It's almost always crowded and has a nioce bustling atmosphere. Not, haute cuisine, but it has yet to disappoint me.
Favorite Dish: Tris di Pasta - three different kinds of pasta. It's always different.
Also, try the Vitello Tonnato as a starter

J.J. Bootsma Volendammer Vishandel is a booth shop at the Coolsingel street.
Raw herring is a Dutch treat you should try once in your life.
But if you do not fancy this Dutch Sushi, try some of the other seafood that is sold over the counter.
