The Hotel New York in Rotterdam is a wonderful place for afternoon tea! The dumpy, brown brick building with Jugendstil elements dates from 1901-1917. It is dwarfed by gleaming 21st century skyscrapers, and is the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a cup of Earl Grey, salmon and cucumber sandwiches, scones, cakes and strawberry jam, all delivered on one of those three-tier cake stands!. For the British, the tea isn't quite strong enough, but more than drinkable - and you will have to ask for milk as it isn't served as a matter of course, but the friendly staff will be very happy to oblige.

Hotel New York is at the end of a peninsula in the river, Nieuwe Maas. The peninsula is in fact an offshoot of a large development area in Rotterdam known as "Kop van Zuid", sometimes nicknamed 'Manhattan on the Maas'.

Next to the Hotel New York you see:

left: World Port Centre (2001) 133 meters high by architect Norman Foster.

right: Montevideo (2005), Hollands tallest residential building, 152 meters, designed by Francine Houben of Mecanoo Architects.

Favorite Dish: Tea and Scones with cream and strawberry jam! :)) Lekker!!

The bridge I can see from the Hotel New York

I went there for lunch in a bussiness meeting.
The place is great and the food is fantastic.
I don't know about the others restaurants in Rotterdam, but if I was staying for more than one day I would stick with this one, for sure!!
By the way, the service is great too. Everybody speaks english.......

Favorite Dish: Order their lamb with potatos.
I'm sorry, I can't recall the name of the dish.

    Hotel New York

Hotel New York used to be the shipterminal for boats to New York. Many thousands of Dutch people left to the new country to build up an existence there. Nowadays large cruise ships often come here to dock. Hotel New York has a mediocre restaurant and you can also sleep in there of course. The food is not very special, they specialise in fish. However the ambiance compromises a lot.

RESTAURANT HOTEL NEW YORK...: ALSO THE BEST PLACE FOR A DRINK.....

    RESTAURANT INFO...

The fact that it is a historic building / spot makes it so special for me and many, many people...

    RESERVATIONS are necessary and advisable....

You can go there by boat, a sweet little boats that goes from the Leuvehaven (Maritime Museum in the City Centre) to this fine place.

You can also go back by the same little boat...

Favorite Dish: It is also possible to reach New York by car or tram/bus.

When I am there I always think that I hear the hustle and bustle, voices, boxes etc. from the people waiting there in that same hall where we now enjoy our fine food, to be able to go onboard their ship to leave for America, that much promising land.....which for most of them wasn't a Paradise......but a continuation of their lives in poverty in a foreign country.....
some 2nd and 3rd generations did better....

    HOTEL/RESTAURANT NEW YORK ROTTERDAM

Here a photo of the building where there is now a great restaurant called NEW YORK.
Here you can see that it was the building of the HOLLAND-AMERICA LINE. A huge hall surrounded by water and with all the sounds that come with a busy river!

Favorite Dish: Very fine food too for VEGETARIANS

On of my VT friends told me that his grandmother left EUROPE via this BUILDING in Rotterdam.......which has always been an important HARBOUR/PORT....

    for dinner: Hotel New York

    by IceBear7 Written Mar 5, 2003 500 reviews

This restaurant and hotel is in a wonderful old building, the former headquarters of the Holland-America Line.
Today it's a modern place, very busy, great location at the Maas Harbour, just next to the Erasmus Bridge.
Interior is a little messy, but great, with a nautical theme.

Favorite Dish: Duck with grapes and oranges, chips and salad. But they are famous for their seafood, you can watch the chef prepare the lobster, oysters etc.

The Hotel is where the ships would leave for America and a 'better life'. The Hotel has brilliant views up and down the river and does excellant nosh! You can sit for hours, take in the atmosphere and watch the boats come in. It is expensive though so bare that in mind if you fancy a blow out!

Favorite Dish: Has a wide range of options, anything really from a cheese butty to posh fish! What more could you fancy? Vegetaraians no problem.

The food isn't that special, but the building has a real (and sad) history. After World War 1 and 2, a lot of people left Holland to emigrate to the United States and Australia. Hotel New York is the former terminal for the ferry to New York, and the former headquarter of the Holland-America boatline. A lot of tears fled overhere in the past....
Nowadays it is a hotel and restaurant, with a beautiful architecture. The hotel is okay, and the food as well. Not very cheap to eat !

Favorite Dish: There is no any I like most.
