Restaurants in Rotterdam and in the Netherlands in general are not the cheapest. The best way to spend affordable vacations here is to rely on self-catering. However, from time to time I like to go out eating, even here. Open was an obvious choice: A nice sandwhich café, slightly alternative-artsy. Staff is very friendly and I really think that it would be a place where to return.
Favorite Dish: I had one of their sandwhiches, with cheese, vegetables and roasted pine nuts. Not the cheapest sandwhich I have eaten, but surely one of the best. The menu is not large, but it’s not mainstream. The girls and guys here are a little creative when it comes to their food and give you the task of chosing between many delicious soundng sandwhiches and soups.
DE EEND, I wrote about this restaurant and now here is a photo!! There is someone who will recognise this place because we went there for dinner !!! DO YOU REMEMBER RUSS ? MAY 2000 ?? and again MAY 2001 ???
RUSS SUDDENLY PASSED AWAY 14TH OCTOBER 2001: MAY HE REST IN PEACE....
One of my favourite restaurant is called DE EEND (THE DUCK)which you can find when you walk from the railway station straight on a few hundred metres on your left (Mauritskade). The name is in BIG LETTERS on the window. It is like a large dining room at home, with TV, a good kitchen, with good, dutch meals (my American friends liked it very much), very friendly staff and is not expensive. Choose whatever you wish to eat before you enter. In the hall is a blackboard with all menus and prices, although you can easily change e.g. baked potatoes into cooked potatoes: all is possible!. Go there: open from 5 till about 11 pm. You will enjoy all the fresh cooked/baked food.
Another not expensive restaurant is DE KEUKEN ( THE KITCHEN) in the departement store THE HEMA on the LIJNBAAN in the citycentre. You make your choice at the counter and can take it to your table. There are non-smokers areas.
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL: go to Hotel/Restaurant NEW YORK. You can reach it by boat (a small one) from the Maritime Museum, departure point Leuvehaven. This hall used to be the Departure Hall of The Holland-America Line, from where many, many people travelled, for fun on cruises and others were emigrants from all over Europe who travelled from Rotterdam (Kop van Zuid) to Ellis Island, New York!
When dinner/lunch is over there are enough small boats to take you back to the Maritime Museum or another place. But the Maritime Museum is near the City Centre. In this
building many tears must have been shed: until the sixties, Rotterdam was the departing point for hundreds of thousands of EUROPEAN COUNTRY MOVERS, looking for a new (better) future in America, Canada and Australia.
Favorite Dish: the sweets to end your dinner with are delicious in DE EEND as well as in THE KITCHEN not to talk about restaurant NEW YORK!!!
'Orient', this is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in the Cantonese kitchen and Dim Sum. For those of you not familiar with the concept: Dim Sum is general name for an assortment of small Chinese (or should I say Cantonese?) snacks. This can include fried or steamed dumplings, egg-rolls and the likes.
Anyway: it's yummie!!!
This is one of those Chinese restaurants which are not customized to the Dutch taste. What I use as a criterium when going to Chinese resaurants: I only go in if I see Chinese people eating there and not only Dutch. 'Orient' is a place where complete Chinese families enjoy meals.
Also, you can enjoy good food for a very small price too! I usually don't spend more than EURO 10,- for complete Dim Sum meal. I am stuffed after that! I recently went there for a light lunch and with the 4 of us we spenta total of EURO 20,- incl. drinks...
Favorite Dish: The Dim Sum of course! I like everything with shrimps in it and I prefer the steamed variations. Tasty + healthy!
Every evening they offer just 3 different dishes: Meat, fish, and vegetarian. Every day it's something different and it's always really, really good! The atmosphere is reasonably cosy and if you order a few beers with your dinner you'll end up paying around 35 Dutch Guilders (about 15 Euro's).
Favorite Dish: The menu is different every day!
