    PLAATBOEF: 2nd hand vinyl records

    by pieter_jan_v Written Aug 9, 2009

Plaatboef is a Rotterdam institution for vinyl records. In 1981 the first store opened at the Maretakstraat by Dennis Meijer, and moved to the Nieuwe Binnenweg 179 in 1983. That was the former location of the famous "Bertus" record shop. The ever growing merchandise amount forced a move to the present location at the Nieuwe Binnenweg 81A. But even here 30 square meters floor space were added in 2006.

As a result the present shop has three floor levels with some tricky step changeovers.

There's something for everyone. Some cartons are not sorted, so better schedule some searching time when visiting.

    Business hours:
    Mo: Noon - 6PM
    Tu-Th: 10AM - 6PM
    Fr: 10AM - 9PM
    Sa: 10AM - 5PM
    Su: Noon - 5PM

    What to buy: Records!

What to pay: From Euro 5 for albums.

De witte tanden winkel: Everything for your teeth

by ATLC Updated Sep 14, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The White Teeth Shop offers everything for your teeth. I didn't know there were sooo many more toothpastes than in a regular drugstore!

What to buy: Tooth powder to whiten your teeth, electric tooth brushes, tongue cleaners, you name it!

What to pay: Prices differ per product. I spent € 30,90 on 3 pots of tooth powder, a soft tooth brush and 2 brushes for my electric tooth brush.

R&R Collections: Sarees and Indian clothing

by ATLC Written Sep 7, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The West-Kruiskade continues onto the 1e Middelandstraat where you will find a number of Indian clothing shops. They are all extremely colourful and glittering with handsewn beads and decoration.

What to buy: Beautiful colourful sarees, evening gowns, childrens festive clothes, shoes, Indian jewelry, scarfs...

I bought 2 beautiful fabrics in the end-of-sale. A very large green scarf with lovely dark red knotted fringing, and a beautiful saree purple and green. Both were € 10 a piece. I think I will use the saree as a table cloth, as it is slightly damaged and not really fit to wear it as a saree. But beautiful nonetheless.

What to pay: A saree or evening dress is from about € 65 to € 250. You can also buy fabric and have it sewn into a ready made saree for € 30 extra.

Lusthofstraat: A nice urban shopping street

by ATLC Written Mar 5, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The rather posh quarter Kralingen has a nice shopping street called Lusthofstraat. It's really important that small shops stay in existence. That not everything is taken over by chains and megastores.

What to buy: Good quality shops like a bakery, good butcher and also an organic butcher, deli/cheeseshop, Turkish shop, various fashion boutiques, bookstore, toys, etc. Everything you need really in just one small street.

My eye fell on a beautiful purple leather shoulderbag in one of the boutiques (Altanzza) and my fate was sealed when I entered. Waaay too expensive. I'm no good at brands, but by seeing the quality I knew I had to do with serious quality brands for shoes, bags and other accessories.

In the end I found a bargain in the end of wintersale pile.

What to pay: I fell for a pair of gloves at the end of wintersale.
The gloves were half-price (which was still a considerable amount, haha!).

    Funkie House: Casual wear

by Airpunk Written Jan 25, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are into shopping, Funkie House may be a good adress. A large range of clothing brands can be found in this huge shop. What makes it more interesting is their own collection, giving the shop an unique choice you won’t find at any of the big chains. All in all, Funkie House’s sortiment is trendy with a slightly alternative touch. The selection is huge, so you can easily spend some time in there. Prices are a little more than average: Not the cheapest, but still affordable.

What to buy: A large variety of men and women clothes

    DUMP (or D.U.M.P.): Outdoor stuff

by Airpunk Updated Jan 25, 2008

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Dump is one of my favourite stores in the Netherlands. They offer outdoor/military/punk items at reasonable prices. The stuff is mostly new, but also a couple of second hand items are for sale, giving it an interesting choice. No-name clothing, used military jackets and famous brands – you’ll find all under one roof. The only thing I do not recommend is buying anything from Lonsdale, if you want to travel onwards to Germany. This brand has just the reputation of being a tough brand elsewhere, while in Germany it is associated with right-wing-extremists….

Dorine Christ: Witte de With straat: Jan Jansen shoes

by sachara Updated Dec 25, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Witte de Withstraat is one of the hotspots for fashionistas and shoppers who are looking for something special. If you are in the area of the museums (Boymans Van Beuningen, Dutch Architecture Institute and Kunsthal), it is worth to pass by the Witte de With straat, a cultural trendy street with a varied selection of tempting shops, galleries and restaurants.

Shoe addicts, who love shoes of the Dutch designer Jan Jansen, like me have to visit the 'Dorine Christ' shop. The shop has a wide range of Jan Janssen shoes, but also nice accessories like bags and hats.

What to buy: I bought a pair of lovely boots (picture 2).

What to pay: Bring enough money or your credticard
