Rotterdam was europe's cultural capital in 2001 but it is still famous for its festivals. These includes museum nights, film festivals, but also some outdoor events like the zomercarnaval. Caribbean rythms, a street parade and exotic food make this event one of the most enjoyable in Rotterdam. The main events are the brassband battle (warming up) which is on an evening and the street parade on the following day. With over 600 000 visitors every year, this is the largest caribbean carnaval in Europe. Zomercarnaval takes place in the last days of July, check out their web page for the dates in 2008! Leave a Comment Directions: The final of the brassband contest takes place at the Coolsingel, but the festival occupies almost the whole city center.Website: www.zomercarnaval.nl

Rotterdam is THE place to be in summer. Different kinds of events take place here, from Zomercarnaval (caribbean summer carnaval) to Wereldhavendagen (world harbour days) and several more. A quieter event are the summer Sundays – Zomer Zondagen. For five weeks, every Sunday small performances take place in the city park. Most times, these are music groups, but there are also other acts and activities for children. I had two music groups and some comedy: De Zwoelie Troelies. Remember “Barbie Girl”? This song and more summer hits from the past years were interpreted by three ladies dressep up as elderly women. For that, they use to play on trumpets, harmonicas and similar instruments. Nice idea, interesting sounds and really funny. Unfortunately, for somebody in heaven it was a little too funny and it started to rain shortly after the show… Leave a Comment Directions: In the park, a short walk away from the EuromastWebsite: http://www.zomerzondagen.nl Other Contact: http://www.zwoelietroelies.nl

Luxor theater by RubenE Commissioned by the City of Rotterdam, Peter Wilson of the architectural firm Bolles and Wilson from M?nster, Germany, designed the by now familiar warm red-coloured theatre building on the Wilhelmina Pier. The surprising interior of the nearly 16,000 m2 large theatre, too, was executed after the design of this Australian architect. MUSEUM SCHIEMANSHUIS ROTTERDAM by eden_teuling Go visit the MUSEUM HET SCHIELANDSHUIS. There you can SMELL real ROTTERDAM till 5th October 2003.... The smell of seawater and seaweed, petrochemics in Hoek van Holland, ore and coal in the Botlek Area, spices and grass from Feyenoord and "zuid". These typically smells of Rotterdam lead the visitor through the Rotterdam of the 20th Century. And believe me, the smells are real, as real as I smell them when I am there (which if often because one of my children lives and works there in that busy, busy city). Your nose can rest a bit while your eyes have a look at the dozens of objects and photographs and your ears are listening to stories told by real "Rotterdammers" and again, believe me, they know how to tell stories! They are stories about the old Pernis with the smell of soil and strawberries, fish and rope, now pushed aside by industry, stories about the cattle market at the BOEZEMSINGEL with its many pubs for the butchers..... Inspired by all smells everyone can add his/her own smell-memories to the exhibition! The MINIZINE "Smell Rotterdam" can be bought at the Museum shop for 3 euro. There are also 3 lectures but they are in Dutch......for those who understand Dutch! I can promise you that after visiting this exhibition Rotterdam will smell as never before, you simply will be aware of all the smells.... There are 4 activities in the City as a result of this exhibition. DE CROOSBOOT Boattour 3 hrs. more info:010-414 97 51 DE SNERTTRAM A city tour by special tram (guided) 1 1/2 hrs. for more info:www.snerttram.nl CITY SAFARI A special designed "smell" safari through the city FOR GROUPS only! Some 2003 shots of the FFWD danceparade by mafootje All kinds of club music, displayed on trailers. Ending at a big party space near the Euromast. The trailers drive through the city center, there ares some strange rules about drinking. Drinking is only allowed in designated areas, if you have alchol with you on other places the police might ask you to empty the can or bottle. Smoking weed isn't prohibited, i really saw a police officer demanding that someone empty his can of beer but was allowed to keep his smoke, which smelled clearly like weed. This year the event is on saturday august 9th, 2003. Leave a Comment Directions: Centre of Rotterdam well Rotterdam is making it harder for this event to live...the parade isn't allowed to go directly through the centre and sounds may not be louder as 90Db...Website: http://www.ffwdheinekendanceparade.nl/ Other Contact: It's a Yearly returning event.
