Can you spot Petra??? by Mariajoy We arrived here after an hour or so train journey from Amsterdam. There was nowhere to buy a map and no-one to ask for directions. There is a train info desk though but they don't help with directions. We did ask the girl serving in the cafe for directions and she thought there *maybe a hotel...... over there* (waving her arms in a non-specific way). Anyway... you can get trains here to Amsterdam and other major Netherlands cities and probably other places in Europe. Check the website for further info in Dutch and English. A one-way ticket from Amsterdam to Rotterdam cost 12.40E at the time of writing. Leave a Comment

ROTTERDAM PANNENKOEKENBOOT by ATLC Enjoy a Dutch pancake buffet while you make a tour on the Pannenkoekenboot along the river Maas from the Euromast to the end of the Maasboulevard. The tour lasts an hour, and for € 12 you can enjoy the buffet (pancakes and all sorts of fillings). Leave a Comment

Tram 20 takes you across the Erasmus Bridge by aukjejetty I like the to take the tram in Rotterdam, I also like the subway because it is fast. But the tram is nicer for tourists, because you get to see so much more. There are daypasses or two or three day passes. I wouldn't recommend those though. I would suggest you buy a "strippenkaart" a long blue card [bought at the counter of central station or at Beurs or Blaak station]with each strip representing a zone. If you stay within the centre-zone you use 2 strips. Fold the card and stamp it in one of the yellow boxes you see in trams and at the entrances of the metro. For example if you go to "Delfshaven" you can look up the amount of zones on the map at every station or stop. "Delfshaven" is within the centrezone so it will be two strips [the first strip is always extra]. If you go to the other side of the Erasmus bridge to "Wilhelminaplein" station it is two zones, and therefor 3 strips. A little complicated, but it is the cheapest way for public transport in the cities. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by Imbi There are frequent trains to Belgium and France from central Station, almost every hour. We paid Euro 32 for two people for Antwerp but the only problem we faced that the changed the platform at the last minute and only announced in local languages. Never mind we were just one hour late for our destination. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

The train provides the best transport outside the Rotterdam region. On most lines there is a train every half hour during the day, every day of the week. The first train leaves around 5.30 am, the last around midnight. More information about arrival and departure times can be found in the railway timetable book (Spoorboekje), which is partly in English, German and French This is available from the station and the Information line for public transport (see below). If you make daily use of the train, season tickets and reductions are available. For public transport within the Rotterdam region the bus, tram and metro (subway) all provide an excellent service. If you have a valid ticket and are travelling within a specific time and a limited area, you are free to transfer between bus, tram and metro and in the case of some tickets also the train. The Rotterdam transport area is divided into a number of zones. Your ticket is valid for a specific number of zones and a specific period of time. Before you validate a ticket, you need to know how many zones you will be travelling through. The centre of Rotterdam is considered as one zone. Do not hesitate to ask the public transport employees to assist you. Theme: Train

Normal trains go every hour and take 1 hr 8 min. from station to station. No reservation needed. Thalys goes 6 times a day, takes 1 hr and 25 min. Reservation needed and you have to change trains at Antwerpen Berchem (one stop before Antwerpen Central). Earliest train (not a Thalys) goes at 5.19 hrs Latest train (not a Thalys) goes at 22:25 hrs Fare: Because you cross a boundary into another country, the fare is not shown on the website. To give an idea: the fare from Rotterdam to Roosendaal (the last Dutch train station before crossing the border with Belgium): 2nd class Single ticket € 8,10 Return ticket € 14,30 You'll be using Dutch Railway which means you can check all this the national railway website (in English) Leave a Comment

view at the high-rise buildings from the station by sachara, 4 more photos Rotterdam is well connected by train to the Dutch railroad system and has some international connections as well. Coming from the north of the Netehrlands I usually visit Rotterdam by intercity train. I come also by train to Rotterdam to catch the high speed Thalys train to Paris or sometimes an international train to Belgium. The actual building of the Central Station is from 1953. The Central Station and the Stationsplein are under reconstruction. In the station you will find several shops and a bank. I like the AH supermarket with fresh bread, fruits, fresh fuirt juices, other drinks and snacks, which is also open in the evening. Besides the main station Rotterdam has six other railway stations within its boundaries. The intercities don't stop here, but the local trains do. Leave a Comment

Rotterdams subway has two lines, the Erasmus line and the Caland line. The Erasmus line has its terminal at the Central Station in the north. Two stations away from the Central Station the both lines connect at station Beurs. In the south both lines have their terminal far into the suburb of Spijkenisse, sharing five stations along the line. The Caland line ends in the north in the suburb Capelle a/d IJssel. During the day the metro or subway departs about every 5 minutes, in the evening every 15 or 30 minutes. For travelling by subway or using other public transport you need to buy a 'strippenkaart'. Every time you take the subway or bus and tram you have to stamp one strip for every zone and one extra strip. You can buy the 'strippenkaart' in the train- or subwaystation, but also in newspaper stalls or tobacco stores. You can buy a ticket in the tram or bus from the driver or the conductor as well, but it's more expensive. Leave a Comment

If you are tired of walking and dont'want to ride a bicycle yourself or take public transport, you can take the velotaxi. Like in many other European cities this western riksja 'the velotaxi' is also introduced in Rotterdam. Last year I saw them in Vilnius in Lithuania as well. If you see a free velotaxi, you can ask the driver for a ride and start your journey. You can also call to order a velotaxi. You can choose your own route or make a guided tour with a special theme. It's a nice and relaxed way to explore the city, while having direct contact with the outside world of the daily citylife. En route you can stop everywhere you like. The Velotaxis in Rotterdam citycentre are operating from may till october everyday from about 10.00am till 18.00 pm. The price is 1 euro pro person for three minutes. For kids there are lower or free rates. Leave a Comment Theme: BicyclePhone: + 31 10 44 343 52Other Contact: Rotterdam@velotaxi.nl
