    Pier Scheveningen

    by Nathalie_B Written Mar 31, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Pier Scheveningen is not the biggest attraction of the area, but definitely the place that suffered the most.
The Pier used to be infront of the Kurhaus but was removed to where it is now because it was spoiling the view from the hotel. It makes no profits and has no money for renovations, although the owners plan to build a hotel on the, what they call, island.

It costs one Euro to walk on the pier all the way to the Bungy jumping tower and the restaurant and casino. On the way there you'll have a chance to take pictures from the balcony, to shop in suvenir stores while you're kids are enjoying lego games.

    Beach apple

Favorite thing: Along the beach in Scheveningen you have signs like this very 200 meters or so one that people can use as orientation. And they're especially designed so kids can remember them as well.

Underneath the apple is a space where companies can advertise..

    Scheveningen
    4 more images

Favorite thing: Scheveningen is a district of The Hague, a well-known seaside resort with a long sandy beach, an esplanade, a pier, and a lighthouse.
In 1818, Jacob Pronk constructed a wooden building on a dune near the sea, from where people could bathe from four separate rooms. It marked the start of Scheveningen as a bathing resort. Since then, Scheveningen has attracted numerous tourists from all over Europe, notably from Germany.
The boulevard is the centre point of Scheveningen. With its many restaurants, bars and shops there is always something to see or do. Sit on one of the benches and enjoy the beautiful view over the North Sea.
The light house has the monument status and exists since 1875. The light house is 49 meters high and is nowadays still used to warn the boats of the coast line.
The Pier is one of the best known attractions in Scheveningen. The view is amazing, especially on a clear day. For everyone visiting Scheveningen, the Pier is a must see!

    "My" Lourdes Grot

by RoyJava Updated Sep 2, 2007

    lourdes-church-scheveningen

Favorite thing: Just one step behind the Circus-Theatre and next to the Casino, Scheveningen, you can find the Lourdes Church (O.L. Vrouwe van Lourdes Kerk). Within in the hectic centre of Scheveningen a good friend told me about this spot. Besides the Old Church of Scheveningen there is this "oldest area" of Scheveningen, where the fisher-women gathered for a pray to heaven to bring back their loved-ones form the wild sea ...

Fondest memory: The name of Lourdes Church and it so peaceful Lourdes Grot (Cave) must have been turned up after the Bernadette of Lourdes myth. A lot of travellers come here to pray for a good trip on their way, or light a candle. There is a Maria-statue, pure white, in a corner and, when the light comes in at a particular time through the glass windows in the roof (midday), the light will shine right at the statue. It has been lightened up for now, though when I am there for a little meditation I can imagine how people get surprised by the sudden light coming in from up heaven ...
A friend of me could not resist the peaceful candles at one of my fondest spots ...

    Fairytale Statues

It's been a long hard day

Favorite thing: The Beelden aan Zee museum hides just behind the dunes midway between the pier and the harbor. To help entice visitors to the museum, they put out some artwork on the dune visible from the promenade. My favorites are the 23 statues of fairytale figures created by New York sculpture Tom Otterness. The largest of the statues shows the proper way to eat a herring.

    sunset-scheveningen

Favorite thing: Scheveningen is located at the western coast-line of Holland, so you can watch here the famous Dutch sunsets ... really, please do believe me :o)

I love to be around and wait for the Scheveningen sunset, which was in 2006 sublime!

If you walk on the Pier (it is free!) you may enjoy the beautiful sunset light shining all over the beach.

Fondest memory: When the weather is good the view is so beautiful. The sharpness in focus is gorgeous and the famous colours of any sunset will show up here, too, in Scheveningen ...

    Just love it!
