    LADY LUDWINA

by RoyJava Updated Oct 25, 2007
    sign-westvest-schiedam

Some very special feelings I keep for the legend about the Holy Lady Luduina, or LADY LUDWINA. According to the legend the name originated in the story of the suffering (= lijden in Dutch, "lidien/ludwi" is a dialect) young lady who was born in Schiedam, April 18th 1380.

She had an accident in wintertime of 1395 and broke a rib. It was her right side and, that already was a symbol to her spirit. The virgin lady's story started to become a legend. She suffered from pain all over her body for 38 years. She prayed to the Blessed Virgin, and was very devoted to Our Holy Lady Mary. Some miracles happened at her bed-side and some miraculous healings has been reported. Although some people thought she was posessed by evil spirits ...

She died at April 14th 1433 ... April 14th is my mother's birthday, too.

To her grave come a lot of pilgrims where a chapel (for now named Luduina Basilica) was built in 1434, just one year after she died. Including the Count of Holland, named William VI.

The book Saint Lidwina of J.K. Huysmans (Tan Books and Publishers of Rockford - 1979) tells the legend about her and, is translated by Agnes Hastings into English.

Another well-known article is "Liduina, the Virgin of Schiedam".
These are studies (on "Significant Representatives of the Modern Devotion") which are about "Rise, Flourishing and Waning of a Saint Cult, c.1400 - c.2000" by Hein Blommestijn - Charles Caspers & Rijcklof Hofman ed. - Leuven: Peeters, 2003

Going on "windmill" hunting you have to drop by this cute little The Windmill Cafe.

It is easily to find close to the windmill of De Drie Koornbloemen ... next to the small roundabout.

Have a cup of coffee for about 2.00 Euro ...
People may tell you some legendary stories about the windmills.

    Windmolen De Nieuwe Palmboom Schiedam

    Palmtree

It's orginal name was just "Palmboom" (Palmtree), the first stone was laid on april 28, 1781. The original mill was destroyed by sparks from a burning factory in 1901.

    Rebuilding

In 1988 they decided to rebuild the remains to a complete mill. This difficult project was finished in 1993. Today the mill is home to a museum telling the history of these mills.

The museum is open for the public every day except mondays.

    Porter demonstration in Schiedam

Porter has been a job in Schiedam since there was a dam in "de Schie" they had to carry goods over the dam from on ship to another.

These porters united themselfs in guilds in 1486 no one may carry goods and get paid for it without being member of a guild.

In 1577 the payment of the Porters depended on the sort of goods and the distance that it had to be carried.

When a ship enter the harbour the guildmaster sounded the clock on the porterhouse and turned a hourglass.

Everyone that was at the porthouse in the seven minutes that the hourglass needed to empty had a chance for work.
When there where more men as there were jobs the had to throw dices. The ones that threw the highest number got the job.

In Schiedam there still is a porterguild, if you'd like to become a member you can call the numbers below.
