Favorite thing: The Pasar Malam Besar, The Hague, still is one great happening to me. Ofcourse it is funtime, too, to meet a lot of friends who come to enjoy this Indo event and, to show my new paintings at the same time ...

Yep, I do join this Indo Festival for a little exhibition with my last paintings. Mostly migrants from Indonesian colonial times come to enjoy the huge event, however all kind of nationalities join like bees at honey ...

    Pasar Malam 2006

Fondest memory: During this event it is a wonderful chance to meet some VT friends. 2006 has been the second year I could meet La Holandesa and Vincent. That is fun, and let's be honest, ... isn't she adorable, the cute little Indo lady? On Vincent's lap ... thanks for coming folks, until next ...

    Chinese Party-Time

by RoyJava Updated May 18, 2006

Favorite thing: The Hague is well-known for its multi-cultural people. You can imagine how happy my family was, when we moved to The Hague. Very happy ... because they could buy all kind of exotic articles, their herbs, vegetables, other food stuff at the Chinese and Indonesian shops (named toko). The Chinese people managed to keep their business in one area (like in Amsterdam). The same area where once a year it will be Party Time overthere ... ;O)))

Fondest memory: Maybe of this reason I love to walk around in the Chinese area in the center of The Hague. Just located right in the center of The Hague you cannot miss the Chinese Holland-The Hague area to get the exotic feeling of the Far East. Donot look surprised to see the names of the streets in Chinese ... and whenever able join the amazing Chinese New Year's Event ... you won't regret it... for sure !!!

    Delicious Java Food

by RoyJava Updated Nov 29, 2005

Favorite thing: Actually this topic had to be placed at "Restaurants", but I donot want to fool you. This is about "Babi Guling", the originally roasted "sucking-pig" on charcoal. It is famous from Javanese Gianyar, and on Bali it is served, too. When never tried before you have to attempt ... for once in your life time ...

Fondest memory: So ... this was a private happening, because of the opening of a house. And the presentation of one of my paintings! The Lady of the House prepared the Babi Guling in a wonderful, original way, just like on Java and Bali. Fresh ginger, cloves, asem (tamarind), garlics, turmeric, nutmegs, sereh (lemon grass), trasi (dried shrimp pasta), cardamoms, lombok (chili pepper), onions, black peppercorns, salt, pepper, sugar... all she had added, so a BRAVO for this party food time, and such a wonderful memory !!!

I could not keep back this pic from you ... :)))

    BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE

by RoyJava Updated Aug 19, 2005

Favorite thing: When I entered The Hague after my Switzerland adventure for one year it took a little while to get used to the The Hague people. Amsterdam is cool, Rotterdam is hot, Utrecht is multifarious, though The Hague is multiracial in the way of multidinous in one. And the unity does not concern the variety of its people in The Hague.

Fondest memory: Fortunately I got addicted to The Hagues way of life and its marvelous multicultural inhabitants, its many visitors, and its royal color. Ofcourse its blue sky and its golden beach took care of being fond of this royal, governmental city with its ancient name of 's-Gravenhage ... which is a festival to live in!
    THANKS THE HAGUE

Parkpop, biggest free popfestival in Europe

    Parkpop 2003

Favorite thing: Sorry guys, you missed this awesome event. But June next year you have a new chance..

Parkpop is held every year in the Zuiderpark in Den Haag. Normally in june but is has happened to be occasionally in july. It has been held for over 20 years and still is so much fun. Lots of known and unkown artists and bands show up for this festival.

    site: www.parkpop.nl

As always there will be the normal 3 stages. 2 more or less pop/rock stages and a dance-stage.
And there is also a 'locals only' stage with emerging bands from the Netherlands.

    Pasar Malam Besar Festival Event

    pasar-malam-besar

Favorite thing: The Pasar Malam Besar in The Hague is a party-time every year to me. Actually it used to be an event for people who had been born in Indonesia and immigrated to Holland (the migrant "Indo"). They gathered together, had a chat, a laugh, some buys, and brought their delicious food. It's called a "kumpulan" ...

So this small gathering worked out into a huge festival. It is the biggest Indo-event of the world, started by Tjalie Robinson at The Hague, and running for now by 7 women. That is very special, is it?

Fondest memory: So if you are around in the month of Juin, take care of the posters hanging around. The Pasar Malam Besar Festival Event will be announced and, you will find me with the Art-Stand. One of my best times in The Hague, read more >>>

    Parkpop 2003

Favorite thing: What i like about Parkpop so much apart from the music is the relaxed ambience. No pushing and shoving. Everybody is just enjoying themselves. Some people dance, some people sunbathe... People bring their newborns along so you find all sorts of people, families, teenagers, twenty-something, 30+, over 40... anything and from all walks of life.

The next day a team of volunteers moves in to clean up the mess....apparantly for some people that is as much part of the fun as the festival itself
