Grote Markt: The City's Other Main Square

by johngayton Written Oct 11, 2013

As well as the Plein, in front of the town hall, the center has its Grote Markt (Market) which is also surrounded by bars and restaurants. On a sunny evening pretty much every table in the sunshine was taken, whilst those in the shade were empty - as the pic above shows.

However once the sun goes down the square comes into its own and becomes the center's nightlife locus with clubs such as "Supermarkt" open until late and many of the bars hosting live music at weekends.

As with Plein the Markt has an amiable lively atmosphere and of course the obligatory pretty lady caught my camera eye - AH! Dutch women's legs HA!

Carlton Hotel Naaldwijk: Reading a book!

by Jerelis Written Apr 2, 2012

Wondering what to pack for your next vacation? Yes, we always have some stress related to this issue. As an experienced traveler I always combine some days to relax with some days to explore the surroundings, beautiful historical cities or hiking the amazing National Parks. So I can easily say that whenever I am on vacation, I often want to relax, escape and unwind. There is nothing quite like a good book to accomplish these things.

Being away for many days on a vacation break will of course give you a great chance of getting your head into a good book or two, but which books should you choose to take with you? I do take along some ‘beach books’: a good beach book is engaging and a quick enough read that you can finish most of it on the beach before my sunscreen wears off. A beach book isn't necessarily literature, but a beach book that will entertain. With these beach books in my hand, all I need to remember is my towel and sunscreen.

But some literature is also coming along, because having a vacation, whatever the time of year, usually makes me turn my thoughts to which good book should we take with me? Sitting in my comfortable chair after a beautiful day with long walk, reading a good book in the evening makes it complete.

Asta: Asta (dance club and lounge)

    by dln6874 Updated Apr 4, 2011

The place used to be a movie theatre so it is quite large with several rooms. Perhaps 2 are open for dancing, and another 2 have seating areas for lounging. Standing area by the door is a place you can come to for cooling off.

Cover may be 12-15 euros and drinks aren't cheap either.

ASTA: The most popular in The Hague

    by Nathalie_B Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Asta is located in the city center and it is probably the most popular night club in the city. Everyday different artists and DJs with music, shows (including comedy), etc.
All you have to know is that every Thursday is students' night and if you're above the age of 17 stay away from there ;-)
One more thing, usually Asta is open from 10-11pm.

    Swingtown: Dancing in unpolluted air

by OlafS Updated Apr 4, 2011

I don't dance myself, but this initiative is so good that I like to mention it anyway. Every last Saturday of the month this is the opportunity to dance on music from the 70's, 80's and 90's without breathing polluted air, smelling like an ashtray afterwards, having burn stains (or holes) in your clothes or whatever mayhem nicotine addiction still causes to non-smokers. That's right, this is 100% smoke-free! And of course that adds to the atmosphere in every possible way, which should be very safe and friendly as certain less likable types of people won't come here.

    Entrance fee is 5 euros.

de Oude Mol: Bar with great atmosphere

    by Sunshine64 Written Oct 3, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Both times I've visited Den Haag I have gone to de Oude Mol. Ok, so the second time was on my request. I love the decorations, and especailly the toilet - shown in the picture. Great beer, old wood tables and bar.

While looking up the location on the web I saw a few reverences to live music there, but that must be outside or in the back, because the part of the bar I have been in is VERY small. Bathroom is upstairs.

Wanna have a blast in night life of The Hague go for the Papestraat. The area is a great, pleasant place to go out of your head. Some very popular pubs, dancing cafes and, DE PAAP you can find there. This music-cafe features life music and got well-known for the first gigs of pop-groups which are for now famous in the Netherlands, included Golden Earring, Kane, Di-Rect, Anouk ...

Special note is that during an international Conference for young people (United Nations) these youngsters knew their way to Papestraat in a run, and every year visit this street when Conference is. "It was a blast!", is their cry ...

    Cocoon, Asta, etc.: Interagency Events

    by dln6874 Written Feb 25, 2006

If you're an expat in the Hague, they usually have weekly gatherings at a local night spot. You can meet other foreigners in the area or just go hang out with people from work.

You have to be working for one of the international agencies in the area or be invited as a guest to get in tho. And drinks and such usually are not cheap since they know the expats get paid well here.

O'Casey's Irish pub: Just good fun

by PhillyJohn Updated May 28, 2005

We had occasion to spend pleasant time here with two other VT er's. I can recommend it only for atmosphere, since we did not have the opportunity to eat while there. NathalieB has posted very good information about
O' Casey's and I recommend you to read her tips. I had my first Duvel there. I am very greatful to Nathalie for introducing me to this wonderful beer!

Dress Code: They do require clothing I am sure, but I don't think it is very formal!

    General nightlife

by WorldTravelller Written Feb 13, 2005

The Hague does not have a reputation for a bustling night life. What night life there is centres around the luxurious Pathé Buitenhof cinema and a handful of bars and restaurants in its immediate vicinity. A similar pattern of night life centering around a cinema is present in Scheveningen.
