    The Thai Box: Thai cuisine

    by Rosey-K Written May 13, 2013 90 reviews

This restaurant was previously occupied by Dim Daily which was closed since last year.

The interior deco has been changed a bit to match the Thai style.

    Waitress is friendly and fast.

The main course, Kaeng Kari Kai (chicken curry) and Pad Thai Kai (fried noodles) were so-so only.

A bit disappointed as we thought it says 'Eat in or take out, come and Judge" slogan didn't serve the purpose.

Favorite Dish: The starter which we order, chicken satay was good and tasty.

The price for our lunch for 2 persons is a bit pricey.

Hollandse Nieuwe Haring ..possibly.: This is not a restaurant!

    The stall.
    1 more image

I don't think Hollandse Nieuwe Haring is actually the name of this particular stall: it's just what it sells (along with other fishy snacks).

But it was very busy indeed with local people (I visited around lunchtime) which is always a very good sign.

I'd already decided to try a maatje herring and onion roll on this visit to the Netherlands, and here was my chance: I was hungry and the stall was right in front of me. They sold lots and lots of fishy snacks, hot and cold, but it was the herring-and-onion roll I wanted (2.50 euro on the day).

I cannot describe quite how glorious the herring was. The bread roll was soft, the onion (chopped finely) was mild and the herring literally melted in my mouth. A wonderful combination of tastes and textures which has left me with a craving for more.

Maatje herring is very young herring, served raw but ripened' in brine for a few days. That makes it both incredibly soft and incredibly mild in flavour...and not salty at all. The Dutch invented (or, more likely, 'developed') the process in Medieval times. Nowadays, EU regulations require that the fish is also frozen at -20C for at least 24 hours, in order to kill off potential parasites, so what was originally an early-summer-only treat can be enjoyed all year round.

If you like fish..and especially if you like sushi..I do heartily recommend that you try maatje herring, preferably in a roll and with chopped onion (you'll find stalls in Dutch towns other than Den Haag, of course). It is simply wonderful!

Bibliotheek Den Haag: Friendly place for a coffee and a snack

by leics Written Apr 12, 2013 2314 reviews

    Library exterior

Den Haag's public libarary stands on the corner of Spui and Kalvermarkt. It's a modern building which holds not only the library but also a Tourist Information office, very clean toilets (on the top floor) and a rather nice cafe.

The jolly ladies who served me with my coffee spoke good English. The cafe is clearly a popular spot to sit and work (or surf) on your laptop and offers a range of drinks, cakes and snacks.

The library is a pleasant place for a break and a drink or snack on your way to or from Den Hag's central station.

  • Strandpaviljoen Grand Plage: Great beach bar!

    The outlet
    4 more images

This is a trendy outlet situated right at the Scheveningen beach in Den Haag, not far away from the famous Steigenberger hotel. It's a seasonal outlet though it was working in the beginning of April (even the summer garden was opened and working) and offers several types of Belgian beers (4 of them on tap) plus not a very long food menu, but with big portions, the food is tasty and prices average for Den Haag. The interior, the location of the venue and the great choices of Belgian beers are what is making this place really special for me. The service was also very good, the only disadvantage was that despite of the heating even within the outlet it was relatively cold when we visited it in the beginning of April.

Favorite Dish: The great choice of Belgian beers, four of them on tap, several main dishes with fish!

  • Diner Thuis: Superb interior, food and service!

The smaller dining room on the second floor
    4 more images

I was more than pleasantly surprised when my friends brought me to this old house without any signs that it's actually inside such a fancy restaurant. The venue called Diner Thuis (translates as Diner at Home) is situated in old building from 1904 year with several floors and offers two big dining rooms. With its original ceilings and parquet floors and unique interior from the beginning of 20th century (there are even two original paintings from 1648 year in one of the rooms) Diner Thuis really gives you the idea of going back in time. You are met by the very kind restaurant manager upon arrival -he is offering a drink and showing you around before bringing you to the dining room where he serves the food and explains you in details information about each dish served. The interior, the quality of food and service (as well as the speed of service done by the same manager) is really excellent and is deserving the higher than average prices for Den Haag till the last cent. There is no parking space on the street in front of the restaurant, this is the only negative thing that I could come with when thinking about this excellent venue!

Favorite Dish: Everything what I have tried was fantastic - the salad with wild mushrooms, the portion of 3 small soups, the main dishes - beef and vegetarian, the super tasty desserts.

Ambience is a bit dated, but alright.

This restaurant do offer special menu as well with a discounted price.

Their pan main course, was so-so only.

Favorite Dish: We love their starters, grilled tiger prawns. Very tasty and not over cooked.

My main course which is a Farmer mixed grill was tasty.

Portion of the main courses were generous too.

Little Nepal: Indian and Nepalees Food?

    by Rosey-K Updated Dec 3, 2012 90 reviews
    Mango Lassi
    4 more images

Ambience is average, a bit out dated.

Service is alright and the welcoming is warm.

You can also call for take-away and to some area, they do deliveries too.

Favorite Dish: So far we have tried their Tandoori Chicken and mix kebab, which were so delicious and tasty.

    Highly recommended.

If you like pratha, do give the 'aloo pratha' a try. (It is a potatoes pratha).

    Chicken Briyani was ok.

Their spicy Chicken Vindaloo is really hot and spicy (so beware), certainly not like those average Indian restaurants stated hot and spicy in their menu, but it is not so in reality.

We also love their Mango Lassi (mango yoghurt) drink, as well as their Masala tea (indian tea).

I had an amazing dinner special of bone-in baked ham in a honey-mustard sauce, rosemary potatoes, and sauted green beans. Best dinner in Den Haag. Located in a former weigh house. Great service and atmosphere.
