To me the small Piet Heinstraat/street, starting from beautiful Piet Heinplein (see pic) is one of the cosiest shopping areas outside the centre of The Hague. This is the so named "Zeeheldenkwartier", street area of the Dutch sea-hero's like Piet Hein, just in opposite of the Royal Gardens and -Stables (see link). There are some very nice shoppings and Art Nouveau is found here, some great antique shops, friendly coffee-shops and some New-Age shops ...
What to buy: Take a look at “Supermarkt Moskou”, it's the first Russian shop in The Hague which is specialized in genuine Russian food and drinks, books and videos,Babushkas and several other things ...
What to pay: Piet Hein-street prices aren't that odd! Some sharp priced articles like antiques ...

"Going to the Fred" became a real The Hague quote, meaning going for a "Haegsch" shop at Frederik Hendriklaan, a large street with shops. "Haegsch shopping" is the way the high-society express themselves and, although the Fred is almost one km long you can walk quietly along the enormous diversity of shops ...
What to buy: A lot of nice restaurants, coffe-shops and terraces where you may rest after shopped at the Fred. You could start at Paagman, just in the center of the Fred. Paagman is one of the best book-shops in town ... and see the nice small flower- and fruit-stalls.
What to pay: The Fred is not that expensive, though it isn't a market either ...

During the beginning of May and around the 3rd week of September there is the well-known *F*A*I*R* in The Hague (Voorhout, see pic, & Maliveld). It's worth a visit because of the special atmosphere and the people coming together to this place...
Do go by all means with your kids, they will love these fairs. Find the "sweet candy stand", where the striped rock in variegated colours and yellow spiral sticks of barley sugar always are prime favourites. It's all that glitters like rubies, emeralds, topazes and all the jewels of the Orient and, folk-memory number one!
What to buy: Wow, where to begin ...
Something deliciously sweet, or gloriously sticky, or fizzy, or colourful. Try the multi-coloured lollipops, striped boiled sweets and, donot forget turron, candied fruit, pinones (sugared pine nuts). Watch the strange salty liquorice lozenges and turquoise, pill-like mints turned up from Holland!
And remember: teeth are the last thing children think of ... myriad colours, the smell of fruit and chocolate, the rustle of cellophane, the fun of buying sweets, and the joy of eating them are what count.
;o)))
What to pay: You may spend your money on some fun fair attractions for the kids, starting with a few Euro's ... donot be close-fisted!

During the Middle Ages the small river Vliet near Leidschendam was an important Dutch water-route, a connection between the old Rhine near Leiden and the Meuse via Voorburg, Rijswijk & Delft. The Leidschendam municipality has always been a crank to The Hague, maybe because of the rich well-to-do's built their pleasure-grounds here.
It was because of the agriculture-crisis after 1880 the market-gardens got stroke and Leidschendam turned into an grown-up sister-town. Its very nice ware-house shopping-centre Leidsenhage (roofed over!) got well-known, with about 170 shops ... and more than 3000 free-parking places.
Take tram-line 2 & 6, bus-line 22, 39, 40 & 47
