General transport info: Arriving From Schipol, Amsterdam

It's quite easy to get to Den Haag from Schipol.

The train (Intercity, 2nd Class) tickets cost Euro 7 (one way) if you buy them at the automated machines.

But the machines only takes coins or cards, not Euro notes.

If you have neither, then you have to buy them from the ticket counters and they will charge you 0.5 Euro for transaction fee. So you end up paying Euro 7.50.

The journey takes about 40-45 minutes. But be aware that not all train go direct to Den Haag Central or HS Station. Sometimes, you have to change train at Leiden.

The Netherlands has a vast and efficient network of freeways known as the "Snelweg". Destinations are very well marked with plenty of exit warnings making it easy to get around. The speed limit on the Snelweg is 120 kmph and don't forget to drive on the right.

If you click on the picture to enlarge it you can see that the distance to Europe's biggest and busiest harbour at Europoort is 19 km's away. You will also notice that the berths at Europoort are marked as "havens" and this sign directs you to berths 2250 to 9900.

If you happen to be strolling in the park near Buitenhof you may come across this gentleman who would be more than happy to take you on an historical ride (for a fee) around the old city centre on his period horse drawn cart.

In The Hague there are over 30 bus and tramlines for your travel needs. Buy a "nationale strippenkaart" at a train station, tourist- and post-office, tobacco shop, or bookshop.

The "strippenkaart" gives you access to ALL Dutch buses and tramlines and costs 6.40 EURO for 15 "strips" (45 strippenkaart = 18.90 EURO). For students, people over 65 years old and children there is a reduced rate; 15 strippenkaart = 4.20 EURO.

Also possible to buy a strippenkaart in the bus/tramline (HTM): 2 strippenkaart -> 1.60 EURO, 3 strippenkaart -> 2.40 EURO
(on this strippenkaart children of 4 - 11 years and older people with 65-card can travel together at just one strippenkaart - prices with reserve)

When travelling with your strippenkaart, ask some info inside with the conductor (about the transport zones which cost one strip).
Like one zone travel in the city costs 2 strips, and two zones cost 3 strips etc.

It is possible to buy a "group return" for one day, get some info at HTM. Here you may get any information about the way you wanna go ... also about some night services at Friday and Saturday (all specified on the back of the card).

Be warned, taxis are expensive in the Netherlands. Just getting in a taxi already costs about 4.00 Euro (basic rate) plus each km travelled!
Taxis can be hailed in the street, or ordered by phone:
    *ATC Taxi, 070 3178877
    *HCT City Tax, 070 3830830
    *HTMC, tel. 070 3907722

From the 15th of june till the 24th of august a horse-drawn carriage will go through the Hague every sunday (2004. But it goes around every year). The carriage dates back from 1890. It rides between 12.00 till 16.00 and the whole tour takes about an hour. It will come near or past 10 museums (Panorama Mesdag, Museum for communication, Museum Mesdag, Louis Couperus Museum, Escher Museum, Mauritshuis, Haags Historisch Museum, Museum Bredius, Painting Gallery Prins Willem V and the Prison Gate) of which several give discounts or special offers for people that travel with this carriage. Starting points are Carlton Ambassador Hotel (Sophialaan 2) where the carriage leaves at around 12.00, 13.00, 14.00 and 15.00. And Hotel des Indes (Lange Voorhout) where the carriage leaves at 12.30, 13.30, 14.30 and 15.30.

Tickets are 4 euro and you can get them with the driver. Children up to 10 can go for 2 euro.

is best done by train. But if u like sight seeing I can recommend going by car and park it somewhere along the coast, eg in Noordwijk and take public transportation from there!
on foot off course! Some great pages on The Hague can be found on the www, so just take your pick :-)

  • I came to The Hague by train from Amsterdam and it took 30 minutes around. The city is in the center of the country and has good connections with Amsterdam on one side and with Europe on other side. Remember the city has two railway stations, the central station is usually for the trains that have the city as a final destination. For trains crossing the city they use Hollands Spoor Station.

  • This green mode of transport is easy to use and cheap to boot. All you need to do is hail a Velotaxi when you see one. The service costs 1 euro per 3 minutes per person (infants up to the age of 2 travel for free, and children aged 3 to 12 pay half price). Most rides will only cost about one or two euros. It is also possible to book a Velotaxi. For more information go to www.velotaxi.nl

  • With the dayticket you buy for 5.70 Euro you have unlimited access to the trams and buses in and around Den Haag. You can also go to the beach in Scheveningen with it. Ticket is valid 24 hours.

Trams go frequently, until late evening. At dark there are lots of security at the tram stations which make you feel safe but at the same time you wonder why they are there.
