Festivals and events, The Hague
SEE MY THE HAGUE PAGE FOR THE VT MINI MEET I HAD !!! :o)
Selamat datang! (Welcome!)
To the largest Eurasian festival in the world !!!
A feast of music, dance and food.
It most likely is the largest Eurasian festival in the world, adding a little spice to the Dutch festival calendar.
As the terrain is so large, and the five theatres offer such a varied programme, you’ll easily spend a full day at the Pasar Malam Besar.
Den Haag has been named after the "Widow Of The Indies" by Indo-people (Eurasian people living in Holland, or elsewhere, who has an Indonesian background), because the Dutch has reigned the Indonesian islands for more than 350 years. And the descendants (migrants named Indo's) longed for a place where they could walk about like in the "old Indies days". That event developed into the biggest Indo-event of the world, the Pasar Malam Besar (Big Evening Market) started by Tjalie Robinson at The Hague, and running for now by 7 women. The Indonesian atmosphere has been perfected and is still growing ...
Whenever you will be around at The Hague during the month of Juin/May, just visit the Pasar Malam Besar at Malieveld near the Central Station. You may smell the odeur of fruits, food, scent, while listening to the gamelan-sounds (traditional Javanese music) and some Indonesian guest artists. It last for 12 days and nights (until 23.00 hrs) and even Indonesian merchants are invited to join. For sure you'll enjoy this Indo-event, when fond of the Indonesian islands and, maybe for a chat with RoyJava.
I was there at the art-painters stand every day ... the event started at May 21st until Juin 1st 2008. For the 50st B-day, so this was a very very special event ...
... opened by the Queen Beatrix !!!
And I had good business !
And this year 2009 I will be there again from Thursday May 21st until Monday Juin 1st.
Although the name has been changed!!!
From "Pasar Malam Besar" to "Tong Tong Fair" ...
Don't ask me why ... see link.
Thanks for visit.

This is a typical Dutch event, named Prinsjesdag (Day of the little Prince). It happens on every 3rd Tuesday in September, when Dutch Queen Beatrix reads her in the meantime famous Queen's Speech. The most exciting moment concerns the way to the Binnenhof in the famous Golden Carriage. There are thousands of people along the special way-route waving to Holland's Queen who for one moment is moving like in a fairy-tale ... hope to catch her in the Golden Carriage for a painting! And, ... you could make a trip in the Golden Carriage through The Hague yourself, well, in an golden-painted carriage special created for tourists ...
On Tuesday 19 September 2006, I got the chance to come as close as possible to the Golden Carriage... and shot my special photograph ... hooray!!!
And on Tuesday 18 September 2007, even some closer ... long live the Queen!
This year on Tuesday 16 September 2008 I had no time to watch ... until next year ;o)

Every year around June (this year it's on the 29th of June 2003) it's Parkpop in The hague!
This biggets Free outdoor festival in Europe(yes, that's right: no fee!) In Zuiderpark is generally known for it's atmosphere. It doesn't have the big names as Pink Pop or Rock Werchter but it's a great place to hang out during that day. This year Youssou N’Dour, De La Soul, Kathleen Edwards, 16 Down etc will be playing and some famous Dutch bands.
Everyone who is in the city that day MUST go there. it's great!
When you love to knock about the streets, this is a wonderful place to wander. Every Sunday from 10.00 - 17.00 hrs and every Thursday from 11.00 - 17. 00 hrs. there is an antique & book-market during May until September . Especially when sun is shining the place is a popular, pleasant spot to explore.
And, if you get lucky you'll find some of your liking as a friend of me did; he found himself a Javanese dagger (kris), decorated with rubies, out of ancient times ... for 50 bucks. Well, I donot believe in lucky shots, do you???

This foundation organizes each year the event of the Memorial of Dutch East-Indies at the Indies Monument, The Hague, on 15th of August. It's the scene of yearly remembrances of the Second Wold War when the Netherlands was in war with Japan in former Dutch Indies, the present Indonesia.
Thousands of Eurasians/Indo's (Indo-Europeans) of the Netherlands East Indies come to join at this place which was built in 1988, unveiled by HM Queen Beatrix. They share their emotions and remembrances and, 2005 it was 60 years ago for the Dutch-Indies. HM Queen Beatrix again was present. See the ocean of flowers ...
Every year around the end of january,
the Chinese community celebrates the
New Year with spectacular festivities and
Last year it was very cold and snowy too,
it looked like we really we're in china.
Check it out it'is really worth a visit.
Date: 29 June
Location: Malieveld, Den Haag
Direction: Get off Central Station, turn right, walk about 200 meters.
Attire: Your best military uniform; otherwise just be casual.
Great to see some military vehicles. You could also try out rock climbing, abseiling, etc.
Then, there's also a concert in the evening.
This time it was Queen in Concert.
There's a lot of people dressed in orange wearing crowns, band performing for free, little animals to win at the fun fair and a lot of beer involved. Great party!!
Queens night takes place the night before queen's day on 29 April every year.
Parkpop is the biggest Music festival in The Netherlands. Over 350.000 people come to enjoy the music every year on the last sunday in august. There are several artists from all over the world performing on 3 stages. There are always a couple of headliners, and the rest are beginning or local bands. Over the years I have seen Suzanne Vega, Fun Lovin' Criminals and The Dandy Warhols. Other artists who have performed here are: Robbie Williams, Blondie, De La Soul and many more.
Every year(!) there is the BIGGEST INDONESIAN MARKET in EUROPE on "the MALIEVELD" in THE HAGUE (DEN HAAG)
from ~~9 till ~~20 June.
On the 29th of April each year, the so called Queensnight takes place in The Hague. All sorts of bands and singers are on several stages in the citycentre.
