The Haags Historisch Museum (historical museum of The Hague), is located in the historical ceenter of The Hague. The museum is housed in the former archery house of St. Sebastian’s guild and dates from 1636. It is built on the spot of a gatehouse that was used by the civic guard. Parts of its cross-vaulted basement have been incorporated in the new archery house and can still be seen today. The civic guard of St. Sebastian used their quarters for parties and meetings. Immediately behind the building, alongside the Hofvijver, their shooting ranges were situated.

Besides of the historical collection, many lectures are held on historical topics.

    Visiting hours:
    Tu-Fr: 10Am - 5PM
    Sa-Su: noon - 5PM

    Entrance: Visitors from age 19 € 4,-

The Gevangenpoort (Prison Gate) was originally the entrance gate of the Buitenhof and was used as prison from 1420 to 1828.

It is now used a museum and you can see how the Dutch treated prisoners and criminals in medieval times with a fascinating display of torture instruments.

The famous Gemeentemuseum (yes, is just one word, translated "museum of municipal") was built in 1935 by H.P. Berlage. The museum houses modern works, expressionists and many paintings by MONDRIAAN. See The Hague silver and porcelain (open Tuesday till Sunday from 11.00 - 17.00 hrs), and go for a walk in the attractive gardens near the lake ...

When passing the Gemeentemuseum walking down the Stadhouderslaan you'll see the famous negro-like woman-photograph. Come closer and, you'll notice the white model covered with coffee beans. The photograph (named "Coffee") has been shot by Dutch well-known fashion photographer Marcel Van De Vlugt for his item "I Like", for now to be seen at the Gemeentemuseum.

    This is another museum that
is a "must see" during your visit
    in Den Haag (The Hague).

This museum is housed in an
    early 20th century building designed
by Berlage, most famous for his
    redbrick Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

ONE OF THE CORRIDORS OF THIS BUILDING...

The museum HET HAAGS GEMEENTE MUSEUM is situated at the STADHOUDERSLAAN and it has two ornamental lakes. Such a pity that Berlage died so that he couldn't see it finished and inaugurated!
His plan, wonderful plans were often, too often rejected! Too ambitious, too expensive etc..

    HET GEMEENTE MUSEUM......

Architect was the world famous architect H.P. BERLAGE (yes, the same who designed the BEURS VAN BERLAGE in AMSTERDAM).
    He designed it in 1919-1920.

This Museum was built between 1927 - 1935 and restored between 1996 and 1998.

11th of April 2002 I went there.......but the ponds, once full of water lilies were still empty........shall have to have a look in summer; living in The Hague these Museum Gardens and the ponds with the lilies was one of my favourite places ......

How wonderful this was you can see on the photograph under MUST SEE ACTIVITIES on my main page!

    ANOTHER DETAIL.....

The dark blue glass on top of the wall is a lantern!

Visiting an exhibition, a fantastic one, here in Het Haags Gemeente Museum, I bought some postcards for my own collection and would love to share them with you.

They show you how many fabulous, splendid things were made at the delft-ware factory "ROZENBURG" in THE HAGUE.

Following its extensive renovation, the Gemeentemuseum reopened its doors in 1998, once again revealing the remarkable qualities of the latest creation of architect H.P. Berlage (1863-1934). The museum has been extended with a Fashion Gallery measuring more than 1000 m2, situated below the museum's inner court. The gallery will host temporary exhibitions of the finest developments in national and international fashion. Also new are the 15 cabinets with industrial art from the Near, Middle and Far East at the Industrial Art department which also features glass, Hague silver, Hague china and Delft china. Special attention is devoted to Art Nouveau around 1900 and the fully refurbished period rooms.

The Modern Art collection gives a beautiful overview of the developments since 1860, including examples from the Hague School, Van Gogh, Monet and Jongkind. A high point are the Piet Mondrian paintings on show in four halls, including his Victory Boogie Woogie. German expressionism is also represented beautifully with entire rooms devoted to contemporary artists like Constant. The music department hosts traditional European instruments of around 1600 to the present, instruments from different cultures and electronic instruments, mounted in temporary exhibitions. A musical prints cabinets illustrates the musical instruments and their users.
