    The public beach of Holland

    Kurhaus

Scheveningen is part of the Hague having golden sand, many pubs and restaurants, an aquarium (Sea Life) and a modern lighthouse. The water, no surprise, is not really good for swimming but it can reach an "acceptable" temperature in the summer. However it's perfect for sunbathing on the rare sunny days.

    kijkduin-bassin

If you like to "touch" the vaulting of heaven and experience heaven as effecting light, you could visit Kijkduin, close to the beach and next to The Hague. In the dunes area the American artist James Turrell created a spot where you can watch the sky. At one of the tops of a dune he created a bassin where you can lay on a bench to see how the sky changes into a dome-shaped vault. One you could touch ...

"The mere idea that an artist thought he could bring the heavens down to earth by moving some soil around. With James Turell everything in fact comes down to the observation of light and space".

James Turrell (1943, Los Angeles), trained as military pilote, performed some spying-flights above China and the Sovjet during the 60' high in the sky. He got interested into the world of space and light and, became an international top artist. Next article is in Dutch, sorry ... >>>

    BEACH SCHEVENINGEN

SCHEVENINGEN is part of THE HAGUE and is a most lovely seaside resort.
The boulevard, in the middle of which you find the KURHAUS, is a lovely stretch along the shore.......

Lots of restaurants and cafées and not to forget LOVELY SHOPS!

A most wonderful place for a walk and for those who want to get a nice tan: rent a chair on the beach and enjoy the sun while listening to the waves playing around the PIER.

Of course it is lovely to visit whatever there is to your liking on the PIER itself.......

In this photograph: I was still young, that summer, couldn't imagine that soon after this day the Second World War would start, but a lovely day to the beach was always fun!!

    THE BEST BEACH: SCHEVENINGEN...

BTW I am the funny one on the right!

    Kurhaus & De Pier

    kurhaus-scheveningen

This is the ***** Kurhaus, known by the elder as Huis-Ter-Geul (Home-At-Geul), opened its doors in June 1892. Find your way to this beautiful building, in limestone fabricated and, feel the distinguished romance that the Grand Old Lady (also a name for Kurhaus) granted its festive grace and grandeur. Royal personalities, moviestars, and artists yielded the past to dancers, models and, the international public.

Walk down "De Pier", a roofed over promenade pier in front of the Kurhaus. Try a Bungy-Jump with a lot of fun around. The beach and boulevard of Scheveningen are famous, loved and visited the whole year round to numerous festivities, from a flying and firework festival to music events and sand-sculpture competitions. Extra firework you may enjoy to watch in August ...

Schevenigan is known as the nicest beach in Holland and people travel from all over the country to visit. The water is cold and it is very windy, but the beach is a nice place for a twilight picnic or pancakes in a nearby restaurant. All restaurants on the beach are pricey and the quality is not amazing, but if you havent had dutch panekoeken, this would be a nice place to try it.
I've seen many people kite surfing, surfing, and swimming at the beach, but it is usually chilly.
It is very easy to get to the beach from the Hague city center--only about 20-30 minutes on the tram.
Don't expect golden sands and crytsal blue water---the beach is on the north sea.
On the strand, there is a wondeful spa called Vitalizee. It is a co-ed all nude spa, full of ammenities. There are tons of different tempertaure pools, infused with herbs, saunas, steam rooms, a snow room, cold water baths, salt water baths, retaurant, lounges, and a full service beauty spa. Its not too too expensive to spend the day there, and defiantely worth the entry fee.

    The Hague - Scheveningen-Harbour

    scheveningen-harbour

A Hooray for Scheveningen Harbour, too! Scheveningen celebrated its 100st birthday (since November 26, 1904). Scheveningen (the north-west part of The Hague) was proud, The Hague was proud ... with all kind of events.

Visiting Scheveningen Harbour is more than pleasant. Go to Heaven 2 and see the Marina and its yachts, walk around and see the Museum Ship, located on the war-ship A-856, an ex-mine-sweeper built in 1952 (at right on the pic).

As well in summer- as in winter-time people love to visit this spot, also for a delicious sea-food snack you can get around. Try to get in touch with an original "Scheveninger", the locals who are very proud of their fishing-village. They love to tell about their legends ...

If you don't like the crowdy Scheveningen, or the quiet Kijkduin area, you can go for an absolutely gorgeous beach walk at the protected area of Westduinpark. This dunes area actually has been created like a park, though the dunes and beach are as well a lovely place for nature lovers.

You can make a unforgetable beach walk, go for a bike, enjoy the birds, bats and, other animals belonging to the nature of the dunes area. The place is not that familiar with the tourists and not that easy to reach. Find the Savornin Lohmanlaan, and take a walk to the parking place (where you may park the car). A bilboard sign will show you where to go and watch the lowland of The Hague when looking back on the top of the dunes. It's amazing how high the ocean (North Sea) is located ...

    To help you sing along

If you like Piano bars, this is the place to be. I went with some coworkers on a Thursday night and the place was pretty hopping. 2 or 3 piano players/singers who are actually pretty decent. They played classic sing along songs from the U.S. and around the world. You'll no doubt recognize much of the songs. We even danced around quite a bit in the place.

    The beach of Scheveningen is
3 km long and has an impressive
pier that is being being renovated,
    near the Kurhaus.
Just above the beach is a broad
    promenade that offers small shops
    and catering establishments.

During April thru September, there are about 50 beach pavilions ......
If you are a beach person, this is "the" place to go when you in the
Netherlands. We had a great time while there, but we must also
warn you that all summer, June thru the end of August, this area
is very very crowded, as it draws beach goers from neighboring
Belgium and Germany, especially on weekends.

It was alot of fun walking the beach, people watching, and walking
    out on the pier ......
