To get to or from Vlaardingen you can use the metro. They just finished the subway station last year. For traveling you will need to buy somekind of ticket. There are a few choices.
If you have to travel regular you could by a week, month or year membership for a set amount of zones. When you are just visiting once or just a few times over a period of time you could better by "Strippencards".
STRIPPENCARDS
These come in different sizes depening or where you by them. But in general you can say the larger the amount of strips the more economical they are. Sizes ranges from 2 to 45 strips.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH A STRIP
Rotterdam is divided in 11 zones, for every zone you need to travel you will need 1 strip.
After you found out the amount of zones you have to travel through (displayed on maps around the station) you have to stamp your card. You'll have to remind if you need to travel through 3 zones you'll have to stamp the fourth strip. (3 zones will get you from Vlaardingen to Rotterdam).
TRAVELTIME
When you stamp your card there's also a time stamped on your card. Your allowed to travel through the zones you payed for, for a limited time only.
2 to 4 strips 1 hour
5 to 7 strips 1,5 hours
8 to 10 strips 2 hours
11 to 16 strips 3 hours
17 to 20 strips 3,5 hours
You can travel on all forms of public transportation with a strippencard around Rotterdam. This can be a great advantage when you compare it to a train ticket which is only valid on the train.
REDUCED FAIR
There are special pink strippencards for childeren aged 4 to 11 and peoples carrying a 65+ senior citizen pass. These card have a reduced fair. Leave a Comment

 Orphanage Vlaardingen "
Weeshuis Vlaardingen " by mafootje
Architect G.J. Bosma built this orphanage in the year 1893. G.J. Bosma was a the Hague resident. Up to 1898 it wasn't only used for the harbouring of orphans, it also was used for the elderly.
No longer a orphanage
They stopped using this as an orphanage in 1960 and got a social / cultural function. This building survived two demolishing decisions and was renovated during 1992 and 1993.
At this time it is mostly used as a health center. It has also some appartements in it.

 Spanish Stairs Vlaardingen

It was made out of marble, granite and pieces of glass from all over the world by the company Tomaello who is specialized in this kind of work.
These stairs are both 26,5 meters long, an average of 6,5 meters wide and have a height of about 5 meters.
The stairs where completed in 1996.

 The Visbank in Vlaardingen by mafootje
Build in 1778
This fish auction was designed by Jacob van Schie and it was build in 1778. It has a weather vane on the roof with a herring in it and a lamprey (carrion fish) underneath it which points out the north.
Before 1574
But even before this fish auction was build the Vlaardinger harbour was a place were plaice , mackerel and haddock was auctioned. The reason for building the "Visbank" was that the city council decided fish shouldn't be auctioned outside anymore.
Till 1949
It has been used as fish auction till 1949. Today it is used as a flowershop. It also has a sunken public toilet next to it which (has) to come up ín the evening to prefent people watering against this historical building.
If you are in miniature city Madorudam (The Hague) you can find a small replica of this fish auction.

 Mill Aeolus Vlaardingen by mafootje
Since 1790
The Mill as it is now was build in 1790. During this period Vlaardingen had 2 mayors Antony Ruiterus en Abraham van Ryn.
not the first Mill
It wasn't the first mill on this place, in 1407 there was a wooden mill. This wooden mill was replaced in 1686 by another wooden mill but with a stone fundament. It was used to grind for bakkeries and distillers.
Bad shape
In the early 1900's the maintenance on the mill was terrible and around 1920 they removed the top with the wings and it was used as a watch tower and bill board.
New Life
In the period of 1956 through 1957 the mill was restored and got his current name "Aeolus" after the Greek God of wind.
The Mill is now still used to grind since 1977.

 Driesluizen in Vlaardingen by mafootje
This Sluice is the first of three sluice build in this area around 1250. The sluice where made for Rijswijk en Schipluiden, on the insert on the picture you see the weapons of the sluice of "Schipluiden".
Renovations
These weapons where place on this sluice during renovations in 1639 and 1653.
The original sluice of "Vlaardinger Ambacht" was replaced by the current one. Both other sluice where removed after this.

it's a park located near the city centre, you can take a walk here. In the park you can find a small petting zoo with sheeps, cows and more. But there's also a pet shelter for lost or unwanted pets.

One of Many
This is one of the many churches in Vlaardingen , unfortunalty the maintenance on this church is poor so you can see the decay..
Since 1869
The church as you can now see it was initiated in 1869 and is neo gotic. It was designed by P.J.H. Cuypers.
Partly Dismantled
Due to the decay of the church it was dismantled in 1956, only the tower of the church was preserved.
The tower has been restaured twice since then, once in 1972 and the last time in 1987.
Look close
When you walk close to the church you can see it really needs te be restaured again.
