SPAR is a chain of grocery stores that was started in 1932 in Zoetermeer by Adrian van Well. It was one of the first franchise concepts in The Netherlands.
Seventy years later it is still the largest co-operative grocery chain in the world under one name.
Spar means: Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig (Through co-operation all will profit regularly).
SPAR is also a Dutch name for a tree. Hence the green "christmas" tree as logo.
What to buy: SPAR are typical small neighbourhood grocery stores. In The Netherlands there are 275 Spar shops all run by independent entrepreneurs. Funny enough, there doesn't seem to be a Spar in Zoetermeer anymore!
