De Spiegel: Dutch Food

by florry

We found this place just walking around near a nice quiet Canal. The food was good and plenty and lovely presented. The service was fantastic, very pleasant waitingstaff. People eating there where mostly locals. I can highly recommend this Cafe. I had a big Tuna salad with bread, my son had fish and chips and my cousin had a pancake.

De Jaren: A cafe/restaurant with a waterside terrace

by mariahc1

This is a great place to relax in Amsterdam, especially when the weather is good. The decoration inside is minimal but still classy, offering customers newspapers and magazines to pass their time. The interior of this cafe is also modern which reminded us of New York cafeterias and places for branch. This is quite unusual for Amsterdam where almost all cafeterias keep their historical aspect vivid. However, once you step outside on the waterside terrace, you will definitely feel you are in Amsterdam. You can enjoy your drink or eat your sandwich and get a tan if the weather permits it. It is really worth a visit.

Hotel Restaurant De Oude Taveerne: having lunch on the sea!!!

by mariahc1

This restaurant will not offer you views of the city but it will definitely offer you a unique experience: you will have the chance to eat your food on the sea! (on the pier). It is also very-nicely decorated inside, very local, with very friendly staff who are ready to explain everything if you are a tourist. Then you can take your food and eat it on the outside tables or you can cross the little street and eat on the tiny chairs and tables on the pier. It was very sunny when we went there (while cycling in the countryside) and there were kids swimming in the water, people were sunbathing and the whole ambience was fantastic! The food was very tasty and fresh as well.

Cafe Kalkhoven: a nice local restaurant

by mariahc1

This cafe/restaurant is on Prinsengracht facing the Westerkerk so you are right in the city centre, facing the trams and cyclists going their way. It is a nice way to relax if you are a tourist because you get to see how locals move about on their everyday life while enjoying your coffee or eating your snack. Moreover, its location is great since many major sights are close-by. We had coffee, juice and a sandwich which were all nice, and we were served quite well. It was quiet in the morning but we are sure at night it must get busy.

Majestic: couldn't be more central

by mariahc1

This cafeteria/restaurant/pub was next to our hotel so it was a very convenient place for us to have a drink and relax after a long day of walking around the whole city. We had nothing to eat, but we drank tea, coffee and beer. Sadly, the prices were more than expensive, really, tourists should avoid spending so much on drinks because they will run out of money before their trip is over! I bellieve that the location had a lot to do with the high prices because Majestic is right at the heart of Dam Square. It can't get more central. You can sit and enjoy the view of the square, the Madame Tussaud's faces it as well, and all souvenir shops are right there that's why it is so touristy. All in all, a one-time visit is enough but. still, it is a very nice place.

Winkel: In the heart of Noordermarkt!

by mariahc1

This restaurant is located opposite Noorderkerk (church) and it is very cosy. You can either sit insider or enjoy having your drink and eating outside while watching the passersby in the lovely square. We were tourists so we asked for local food. We had the deep fried Dutch meat balls (Bitterballen), some cheesy sticks, some grilled sausage and some spicy eggrolls (which contain spices with meat and herbs). They were all fantastic! The beer we has was also local (called Grimbergen) and so was the white wine. The staff was very friendly and the ambience was pleasant. We had a lovely time in that restaurant and if we ever go back to Amsterdam, we will definitely pay them a visit again. All the above-mentioned are favourite dishes!!!

The Pancake Bakery: Best pancakes in town / not for budget holiday

by mariahc1

This is a pancake restaurant for breakfast, lunch as well as dinner since it offers a wide variety of pancakes with chocolate, ice-cream, jam, bacon etc. It also serves delicious omelettes which can really make you go back for more. The restaurant is on Prinsengracht street which is only a few minutes away from the Anne Frank House. So we visited the museum (after waiting for an hour in line) and then headed straight away for some food! The ambience was pleasant, the inside is very cosy, with pictures on the walls and small tables and chairs to make you feel at home. The open kitchen is also something special since you can witness the making of "wonders" youself. The waitresses were more than happy to serve. We really liked them. However, paying for 12 or 13 euros for one pancake is very, very, expensive no matter how big it is. We had heard that the place is very touristy and expensive,...

Gauchos Grill Restaurant: Argentina in Amsterdam!

by mariahc1

The restaurant had a very nice decoration, the waitors were very polite and ready to answer all our questions concerning the food. We wanted to try some traditional white wine so that was exactly what they served us, explaining the differences between the various kinds of wine. The food was delicious and very-well cooked, the kitchen was right there so you could see that everything was being cooked in front of you. We had some Ceasar's salad, a steak and all-you-can-eat spare ribs. We also ordered a cheese plater which was quite a disappointment since it was very small and contained only 1 variety of cheese (it was supposed to be for 2 persons). The all-you-can-eat Gauchos spare ribs were fantastic. They were marinated and served with a barbecue sauce. They should NOT be missed.

Koffiehuis "De Hoek": a great way to start your day

by mariahc1

We had heard so many good reviews for this restaurant so we thought it should worth a visit. The man (we don't know if he was the owner) who served us was cheerful and quite excited with all the customers! We interior decoration was the typical Amsterdam decoration you see in most places for coffee and breakfast, a lot of wood to add to the cosiness of the place, nice pictures on the walls showing a lot of famous people who had had breakfast there, a lot of flowers to make you feel like you are at home..in general, it was a pleasant place. There was a large selection of sandwiches, pancakes, omelettes, burgers (for lunch) and apple pies. We love omelettes so we chose to have the "Farmer's Omelette" with mushrooms, tomato, onions and ham in it. However, it was quite expensive since we had to pay 9.25 euros for each omelette! Despite the fact that our breakfast was delicious, paying 30...

Lanskroon: a traditional corner-cafe in the city

by mariahc1

This place is not only a coffeeshop, it's a great place to have breakfast if you are into sweet pastries. Once entering this just-around-the-corner patisserie, you will face a variety of ice-cream flavours, chocolate cakes, cakes, tortes and croissantes. We had a chocolate cake and chocolate truffels which were delicious. We also drank a cup of black coffee and a cappuccino. The ambience was very pleasant, as you can sit by the glass window and watch the passers-by or you can choose to read your newspaper quietly while enjoying your coffee. The lady working there had a constant smile on her face which made us feel quite comfortable as we were foreigners. The inside decoration is simple but cosy, with wooden chairs and nice pictures depicting the delicassies of the shop. However, we thought that it was a bit expensive. But tourists should know that it's not only this coffeeshop that is...
