Aran Irish Pub: Great Atmosphere and Even Better Stew

I was only in Amsterdam for 2 days and had lunch at this pub twice because it was so good. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and although I ate indoors, there is also a nice outdoor eating area that's situated right next to the canal. Our waitress (who was actually Irish) was very friendly and even took the time to direct us to a few places in town that we couldn't find previously. She even drew us a map! The food was excellent and the prices very reasonable. I loved this place. The stew w/ Guinness was awesome and their potato soup was the best I've ever had.

Leidseplein: If You Can't Decide Where to Eat...

If you're trying to decide what to eat for dinner and just can't decide, try the Leidseplein. There are tons of restaurants here with food from all over the world. There's a McDonald's (of course) and the Hard Rock Cafe but there's also Mexican and Chinese food as well as food from just about any other country you can name. There are a lot of nightclubs here also.The only problem that I saw with this place is that part of it is quite lovely - flowers, the canal, little shops...and the other part of it is away from the canal on rather dirty streets with lots of tourists. This is really where the tourists come to eat and party. If you don't mind that, you'll enjoy it. If you do mind that, then try to come here for lunch. It won't be as busy then so you can at least experience the area.

Vlietzicht: good food with good views

This lovely restaurant is opposite the natur park "De Vlietlanden". The restaurant is right on the waters edge with a terrrace on a pontoon on the water but if you want to sit in the shade there is a terrace in front of the restaurant as well.We had a light lunch there and everything was fresh and tasty.They have a website : www.vlietzicht.com but it is only in Dutch.You can also hire canoes, and boats and waterbikes from them. They are all so friendly and helpful and after a 10 kilometre walk we were glad of something to dsrink and lunch. I had a french bread "gezond".... cheese, ham, tomato, egg and salad, Koos had an "uitsmijter" bread with melted cheese, ham and three fried eggs on it.

De Dam: Nieuwpoort stokbrood

this is a great bar/restaurant with a lovely situation along the canal in Nieuwpoort. You can sit outside on a sunny day, the owner is so friendly and the food so good. This time we decided to have the "Nieuwpoort stokbrood" a french stick with a tasty "oud" cheese, roast beef, lettuce and mostard dressing. it was served with a pasta and salad garnish. The bread was very fresh and a little warm, the cheese and beef was lovely on it. We had iced tea with our meal.Mind you I had a hard time choosing somethng from the lunch menu and dithered between the stokbrood and the meal salad. Later I saw the salad being served and that looked delicious..... will go for that the next time we are there.

We would not usually decide to eat at a cafe/restaurant which is actually in a childrens playground but in Nederhemert there was nothing else and we were hungry! it was lovely weather so we able to sit at one of the tables in the garden under the trees, although there is inside sitting. When we were there it was very quiet with only a couple of families and the children playing on the swings, but when we returned to our car it was very busy and the parking area was full. The waiters were very friendly and helpful. Koos had an uitsmijter - two slices of bread with ham, cheese and two fried eggs and it was served with some salad. I had a bacon pancake which was hot and tasty.

Gelderland - Empe (Klein Amsterdam): Coffee & Teahouse ‘De Hommel’

This coffee and teahouse is located in the middle of the rural area between Apeldoorn, Zutphen and Brummen. This almost idyllic location makes it a wonderful place for a break during a bicycle or car trip in this beautiful landscape. Of course you can get a good cup of coffee (coffee comes from the famous Dutch coffee roaster De Pelikaan) or tea, but the menu also has a number of lunch dishes. It is also possible to book a high tea. If the weather cooperates a little bit, you are good in the garden or one of the other shady spots. During one of our visit we had a view of a stork’s nest in one of the nearby meadows. De Hommel also has a small shop with local products.Opening hours: March till October - 10.00 till 19.00 hours. They serve a damned good coffee and apple cake in a quiet and peaceful setting.

INDRAPURA: ENJOY THE RIJSTAFFEL

INDRAPURA WAS A GREAT PLACE TO EAT INDONESIAN FOOD. THE RIJSTAFFEL (WHICH WAS A LOT OF FOOD FOR ONE PERSON) ALLOWED ME TO GET A TEENSY TASTE OF DIFFERENT DISHES. THE RESTAURANT STAFF WERE VERY ACCOMODATING OF MY SPECIAL REQUESTS AND WERE EXTREMELY COURTEOUS AND HELPFUL. IT IS A SLIGHTLY PRICEY PLACE, BUT A GREAT PLACE TO GO TO AT LEAST ONCE.

Zuid-Holland - Sassenheim: Eetcafé De Voogd

After our bike trip through the Bulb and Dune Region we had dinner in ‘Eetcafé De Voogd’ in Sassenheim; one of these ‘bulb villages’ in the area. An ‘eetcafé’ can be described as a kind of pub serving meals, nothing fancy, but simple, honest and affordable.So are the meals: we had a fantastic fried salmon with a very tasteful sauce, French fries and a huge mixed salad. For dessert our choice was a ‘crème brulée’ of green apples and sugar and we finished our meal with a real Italian (Illy) cappuccino. De Voogd also has a sidewalk café for a coffee/tea or lunch; as we had earlier that day during our bike trip. Great food, friendly young staff and very affordable.
