Noord-Brabant - Woudrichem: Restaurant De Gevangenpoort

by vtveen

The old medieval fortified town of Woudrichem has just one remaining gate between the town and the river Merwede. This gate is called ‘Gevangenpoort’ (Prisoner’s gate) and till the end of the 19th century prisoners lived only with water and bread. You still can find the names of the prisoners carved into some wooden panels. There is a good view through the remaining prison windows on the houses of Woudrichem.Nowadays the ‘Gevangenpoort’ houses an attractive restaurant; the main room has only eight tables. Although they showed us an extensive menu, we took the salmon. Just because of the history of the salmon fishery of Woudrichem (even if ‘ours’ were from Norway). The food and wine were good, although rather expensive. Perhaps we were in a (too) big hurry to enjoy our diner. The historical building/setting of this restaurant with a very attractive dining room; knowing it has been a...

Noord-Brabant - Deurne: Grand Café Beekman & Beekman

by vtveen

The café/restaurant is located in one of the oldest and prominent buildings of the town. It is supposed there was already an inn established around the year 1600. Nowadays it has changed its name into ‘Grand Café Beekman & Beekman’, named after a book of a rather famous Dutch writer, who lived in Deurne.During our visit to Deurne we had a cappuccino on the terrace of this café, overlooking the tree lined market square. We were impressed by the atmosphere inside the building and decided to have diner as well. And we were not disappointed: the food was tasteful, honest and simple (it is just a ‘pub serving meals’). We had a homemade tomato soup and a salmon filet. But the menu offers a lot off meat and fish dishes as well as typical local dishes. Simply: good value for the money. The location: if having a drink or diner on the terrace (with heating) you are sitting in the centre of Deurne...

Gelderland - Hoog Soeren: Pannenkoeken-Restaurant Berg en Dal

by vtveen

In the middle of the tiny village of Hoog Soeren, located 5 km’s west of Apeldoorn surrounded by vast forests, is a small and cosy restaurant. According to its name it is serving a wide range of pancakes, on the menu are more than 120 different kinds of this typical Dutch food.In case you don’t like pancakes (which I can not imagine) you can get a lot of other dishes, among them some specialities from the Veluwe. 'Of course' our nDutch speciality: one of the pancakes.Good value for your money

cafe roux: good but not cheap

by sunshinedaydream

roux is in the grand hotel. it has a nice setting near the redlight district, the food is high quality low quanity, the atmosphere is refined, not the place for jeans my favorite dish i have had there was a nicose salad. it was small and a little fancier than a nicoise should be, but after three days of terrible food, it was a great experience

Brasserie 't Graanhuys: the Club sandwiches!!

by margaretvn

This restaurant, in the polders and near a holiday park is a pleasant place for lunch with plenty of outdoor seating for the summer months. The waitresses were very friendly, it was clean and we were not rushed away after our meal. Perhaps during the holiday season it could be busier because it is next to a holiday park but when we were there in September and December it was not busy or noisy at lunch time. I decided to have the "Rottemeer" club sandwich for my lunch and it was filled with crab salad, prawns and salmon. It was nicely garnished and very tasty. Perhaps there could have been a bit more crab salad in the bread but the taste was good. The Rottemeer is actually a lake nearby.

henry viii: steak henry

by interjambo

henry viii is an english pub themed establishment as the name might suggest but dont let that put you off, that would be a mistake. the food on offer here was very enjoyable something for every taste, i really enjoyed the seafood and the house steak, steak henry. right in the middle of the town centre beside numerous other pubs/restaurants. the owners of the establishment were very friendly the last time i was there dagmar and his wife owned it, very welcoming. steak henry, cooked to perfection and enough to feed a hungry man.

Hotel New York, Rotterdam: Old grandeur and vivid Rotterdam views

by ATLC

Art deco architecture, this was the building of the Holland-America Line where the managing directors held office. Built right in the middle of Rotterdam in the old harbour. To be honest, foodwise this is not my favourite restaurant. But don't miss HNY if you visit Rotterdam! Even for a pot of tea and a giant eclair (moorkop). Great place for people watching. Fish soup and fresh seafood.Any other dish was never really up to expectation. Yet I take all my foreign guests here for the spectacular location. A beer is always good :-)

De Smaeck van Brielle: Culinary delight in old surroundings

by ATLC

Small restaurant but in summer you can sit outside on the little square to enjoy lunch, dinner or just have a drink.Take care to make reservations, it's very popular since it opened beginning of 2006. I've eaten there about 4 times now and was quite satisfied each time. The service is very good and attentive. Save for some tiny mistakes (elegantly solved by the staff) you're at a good place to enjoy a culinary dinner in an informal surrounding. I like their curry/appel soup, and they do roast meat and fish very well. They plate up very prettily.

De Bourgondiër: Province Noord Brabant, Bergen op Zoom

by ATLC

Not worldshaking gastronomical food but simple and good. Not badly presented either.I did miss a few day specialities though.Unfortunately (it was May 7) none of the Bergen op Zoom specialities were on the menu: fresh anchovies, asparagus and strawberries.Maybe we were a teeny bit too early in the season? Trio of fish (seabass, salmon, tuna) grilled with mustard sauce € 18,50Salmon with Hollandaise sauce. € 15,50

Restaurant Het Veerhuis: Broekhuizen, Restaurant Het Veerhuis

by ATLC

In the province Limburg, along the river Maas, lies the tiny village Broekhuizen which can be reached by road but also by ferry from Arcen, across the Maas.Veerhuis means "ferryhouse" and is situated right on the border of the Maas. What did we enjoy ? The French white housewine, the asparagus Thai style and asparagus with monkfish, the ginger icecream dessert. the little surprises that came with the coffee, the asparagus flower arrangement on the table and the grand view of the river Maas with boats passing by all the time.Click here to see my Broekhuizen page.
