Noord-Brabant - Woudrichem: Restaurant De Gevangenpoort
The old medieval fortified town of Woudrichem has just one remaining gate between the town and the river Merwede. This gate is called ‘Gevangenpoort’ (Prisoner’s gate) and till the end of the 19th century prisoners lived only with water and bread. You still can find the names of the prisoners carved into some wooden panels. There is a good view through the remaining prison windows on the houses of Woudrichem.Nowadays the ‘Gevangenpoort’ houses an attractive restaurant; the main room has only eight tables. Although they showed us an extensive menu, we took the salmon. Just because of the history of the salmon fishery of Woudrichem (even if ‘ours’ were from Norway). The food and wine were good, although rather expensive. Perhaps we were in a (too) big hurry to enjoy our diner.
