Maastricht: Toine Hermsen: Top restaurant in Maastricht

by ATLC

Toine Hermsen is one of The Netherlands' finest chefs. Always in or near the top 5 lists anywhere.Make sure to make reservations well in advance.Closed Sunday and Monday. Hermsen was one of the first chefs that changed the à la carte menu to suprise menu's where you only choose the number of courses and an accompanying wine programme. The restaurant is U-shaped and the kitchen is within the U. Now when I ate there, we had a first rate table at the bottom of the U, looking right into the kitchen. That was like watching a ballet performance. Amazing how this superb food could be made in such a small area. Our eyes were goggling. In fact, we were staring so much that we told each other we should have some table-conversation as it was quite embarrassing. LOL!At some point we saw the chefs desperately searching for something. They lost a whole roasted large cut of veal. After a while they...

Several, from wall to restaurant: Except Dutch food for what it is

by Luchonda

The food in the Netherlands is just different compared with the Belgian, French standards, this said in a diplomatic way. ( But the standards are better than the German fast food restaurants)Take away food from one of the many Chinese Wok resto's. Take away food (balletje gehakt of kroket) out of a wallBut i have to admit, i had some good experience in restaurants offering fresh seafood?Even on local markets - they are the first to offer fresh "Maatjes"and seafood. And not to forget, the bakeries are also offering some local specialities Fresh seafood - and for surviving, when necessary to satisfy your stomac, a fast food resto or day and night Wall restaurant.

Flevoland - Het Wapen van Ens: Diner with a view

by vtveen

'Het Wapen van Ens' is situated in the Noordoostpolder and we had a diner after we finished an auto tour along the tulip fields in this Dutch polder. And it was just nice to have a table at the window with a view on the tulip fields on the other side of the road. (The other time of the year you will have a great view on the polder landscape.)It is a typical local resaturant with good and fair food. We did take the menu of the month.

Snackbar: Dutch Take Away

by didgeridorien

You can only find the real Dutch food in a snackbar. You'll have to try fries with dutch mayonaise when you're in Holland. To foreigners it sounds really nasty, but it tastes different from what you would expect. With your fries you should have a kroket or frikandel, both fried saucages with meat that can't be used for other products. There's a lot of other stuff you can have in a snackbar, but give this a try, I haven't met anyone that didn't like it! The fries with mayonnaise are a must, but I also like the mexicano, a bit more spicy.

Food on a budget: Food on a budget

by ATLC

For budget food which you can eat inside, your best chances are the so-called 'eetcafe' which is basically a pub that serves food. Also pizzeria's (a pizza would on average amount to 8-12 euro), and chinese restaurants. Then there's the Surinamese take-aways. Check my Suriname page (South America) for an idea of the food. They offer chinese, indonesian, indian and creole food and they usually have a few tables where you can eat it as well. Good food for prices below 10 euro. You'll find them all over but not in the main poshier shopping streets. Also an idea is buying food at a shoarma place and there are no problems with eating out on the street on a bench or in a park. So you can arrange yourself a picnic as well. There are the so-called 'broodjes', which are fresh buns with all sorts of fillings that you can take away. In general I would budget 12 euro for a sitdown lunch (including 1...

Goejanverwelle: lovely sandwiches

by margaretvn

It was a lovely hot sunny day and we sat outside, we were not rushed to order and eat and go but left to enjoy the lunch and sunshine. They were very friendly. The toilets were clean and inside looked cosy and pleasant as well. The cafe is very popular with walkers and cyclists as it is in the middle of an area with lots of walking routes and bike routes. We went for the "12 o clock" which was three slice of bread with cheese, salad and a meat Kroket, everything was fresh and tasty.

Holle Bolle Gijs: the "broodje gezond"

by margaretvn

I would only recommend this old "pub" cafe along the roadside if you smoke because inside it is very smoky or if it is lovely weather and you can sit outside as we did. I would have not gone into it if we had had to sit indoors because I just cannot have smoke with my asthma. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The toilets were clean and well equipped but they did smell a bit. Why I would recommend it for lunch is because we had one of the tastiest "broodje gezond" we have had. A "broodje gezond" is a bread roll with ham, cheese, boiled egg and usually lettuce and tomato. This time the lettuce was replaced by thin slices of crisp fresh tangy apple and the egg was freshly boiled and still warm. So although it was smoky inside and the toilets could of been fresher smelling we were very satisfied with our lunch.

De Waag: the pancakes

by margaretvn

This restaurant is in the old Waag or building wheregoods were weighed (often cheeses) and the inside is small - only seating about 20 people but in the summer months there is a large terrace outside where you can sit and watch the world go by.The toilets are up a steep stair which would make it difficult for anyone who is disable and the toilets are tiny. You can just manage to sit but definitely no cat swinging.... but they are clean and well eqipped. We chose a pancake with bacon and cheese that day and it was freshly made hot and well filled with crispy baco and melted cheese. The coffee was strong and good.

Graf Floris V van Muider: fresh seafood

by margaretvn

This restaurant dates from the 1600's and is a lovely building and with good weather you can sit on the outdoor terrace which is alongside the water and the sea sluices. The service is friendly and helpful. The toilets are clean but you do have to go downstairs to them which may not be good for anyone who is disabled. I had a lovely fresh bread roll with their own freshly made carb salad. Koos had a bread roll with smoked salmon and enjoyed it. The portions were good - we had walk about 5 kilometres and so were ready for a good lunch. The people on the next table had home made fish soup and it smelt lovely.

by pieter_jan_v

A3 Ballon is a hot air balloon company that offers dinners during flight. Top cook Angélique Schmeinck prepares a special dinner during the flight in the 10 person basket, where room is made to serve the dinner. The food is prepared in a special hot air oven that is hoisted into the balloon at 25 meters from the burners. Each half hour the next course is lowered and finished by the cook. In the mean time you can enjoy the view and taste the excellent drinks. The all-in price is Euro 315,-- per person (flight, food & drinks).
