Every restaurant or dining at home: If you have coeliac

by ATLC

If you have coeliac you need to be sure that the food served is glutenfree. So here's a folder which you can print out and give to the staff in restaurants or to your host if you are dining at someone's home.It explains to the reader what coeliac (coeliaki) is, and what happens if the person eats the wrong food. It includes tips for dishes to eat. And a list of foods that are allowed and foods that are forbidden.Coeliac folder in Dutch If you are in The Netherlands, glutenfree is 'glutenvrij' in Dutch. In supermarkets you may find these products in the special foods or diet section.

La Taverna: La Taverna

by Magnum_P.I.

La TavernaEstablished over 17 years ago, you will seldom find a free table in this cosy restaurant. Room for 30 people. The service, the price, and the food was all good! Besides the homemade specialities such as 15 different daily dishes, there are homemade terrines, various local specialities, assorted fish dishes and Brasato al Barolo. Extremely delicious was the pasta, so good, we came back a couple days later for more! And what sealed the deal, was the large beer in a mug, about 4.5 bottles for 12 guilders!

Coffee shop86: A nice find

by Amelei

When i was walking the many canals of Amsterdam, this little coffee shop popped out at me and i just had to go in. From the canal the coffee shop was across the river and hidden up amongst other relic buildings. It took me 1 hour to find it ( this happens to all of us all when Amsterdam takes hold, sucks you in and sends you on some psycidelic trip you will never forget or sometimes have a lot of trouble remembering), but when i did find it with my boyfriend and friends we found our little hub. We didnt move from there for about 3 days. The guys got to know us and were really friendly. i can't remember eating there so i cant give advice on the style of food but the atmosphere was awesome. It does get really busy, so best to try and get in there early. Walk to the very front of the cafe/ restaurant and the view is really something special. Very romantic, very comfortable, very........

Explanation of Dutch Fast Food: Food from the Wall

by Dutchnatasja

Dutch Fast Food; "Food from the Wall"In the Netherlands you do not find fast food restaurants on every corner as you do in the U.S. Familiar to Americans are the McDonald's, Burger Kings and Kentucky Fried Chicken, which you can find in most large cities, with a few sprinkled about on the freeways. Fast food here is also called "Food from the Wall" and it is literally that. For takeaway snacks in The Netherlands, there are snack bars with rows of little windows in a wall. But here there are many more choices and such places are always busy. There is no seating, so you will see people standing around eating their "food from the wall".How does it works?People put in a coin to unlock a window and take the snack inside. I never eat something "out of the wall" ( I did it in the past), but many other people like to have a quick snack and they eat it!

Oudejans: the sandwiches!

by margaretvn

this lovely bar/ restaurant is in the centre of De Rijp next to the tourist information in DE Waag. So you cannot miss it, when we were there it was lovely weather so we were able to sit outside. The people were so friendly and our lunch was so tasty and not expensive. Koos had as delicious fresh bread roll with goats cheese, walnuts and honey syrup. I had a "broodje gezond" bread with cheese, ham, egg, tomato and salad. Everything was very fresh and tasty and the open terrace was claen and sheltered - just the place to linger with a drink and chat

't Smulhuis - Otterlo: 't Smulhuis

by egonwegh

Local restaurant, lively terrace. I believe we had something with french fries and salad. Though their card states that the proprietors are Dutch, I had the distinct feeling that the restaurant was in fact run by a very friendly Chinese family! Something with french fries and a salad. I dunno, it just tasted good!

Floor Cafe: Amazing apple pie!!

by pysyka

Café-Restaurant Floor is an intimate, cosy place with an interesting view to the Schouwburgplein. If the weather is fine (not the case at the moment of my visit there.. :)) ) you can luxuriate in the tasty dishes outside, as the place has a beautiful terrace.(Kitchen open 11.00am-10.00pm) My best experience at the Floor was the apple pie! Try it and you will find out why! ;)

Eating out of the wall

by sim1

A weird thing you might come across in The Netherlands, is that people eat of the wall. There are snack machines in the major cities where you can get your fastfood out of the wall. The most famous one is the Febo. And being back in The Netherlands for a few days I HAD to eat some of these typical Dutch and totally unhealthy snacks :-)) Hahaha, who needs a hamburger and MacD if they sell "delicious" frikandel at the Febo! LOL :-)) Okay.... you probably won't agree with me on the "delicious" part, hahaha, I guess you just have to see this snack as a 'local' thing that only the 'crazy locals' do enjoy ;-))

Oude Wijven Koek

by sim1

This is a picture of my favourite cake: 'Oude Wijven Koek', or translated 'Old Wives Cake'. Hahaha, it doesn't sound nice, but it tastes delicious! The ingredient that gives it its specific flavour is the anise. The cake is a speciality of the Province of Groningen. And the best place to buy it is at the bakery! Don't go to the supermarket to buy the cake there, because those taste not nearly as good.I never found a 'good' Oude Wijven Koek anywhere else in The Netherlands (or in the world) than in the Province of Groningen. All my friends and relatives know this, so every time they visit me, they bring a cake with them..... Yummy!!! Now they even bring it with them to Sweden for me! So sweet of them! :-))

Appelflappen

by sim1

A variation to the oliebollen mentioned above is the appelflap. I just love this snack, even more than the oliebollen. If you want to try out some of these snacks while in The Netherlands, look for a stand like this :"Hollands Gebakkraam". You can see them quite regularly and they sell oliebollen, appelflappen and many more of these type of snacks :-)To make around 25 appelflappen:100 grams flower5 grams yeast4 tablespoons of lukewarm milk1 eggSalt5 apples, peeled, core removed and sliced into 1 cm thick rings2 tablespoons of sugar2 teaspoons of cinnamonSift the flower into a bowl. Dissolve the yeast in a little lukewarm milk. Make a hole in the middle and pour in the milk and yeast mixture. Add the egg and a pinch of salt. Keep stirring the mixture until it is nice and smooth. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and put the batter on a warm spot for about 30 minutes until the batter is...
