Although calorie-counting has hit the Nethelrands too, the Dutch remain attached to their traditional and filling winter dishes, including stamppot, a meal made of mashed potatoes and vegetables. This is often served as a complete family meal with braised meats as they provide the gravy. The basic ingredient is the potato which is cooked with a root vegetable, such as a carrot, or with vegetables such as cabbage or curly kale (boerenkool). The vegetables and potatoes are then mashed with butter and seasoning. Finer vegetables such as endive (escarole) do not need to be cooked. They are shredded and mashed into the hot mashed potato. The most famous of these mashed dishes is called "hutspot" and dates back to October 1574. The Spaniards had occupied the city of Leiden for almost a year. The inhabitants were starving when William of Orange cleverly flooded the surrounding countryside. He...

During wintertime, nearly every restaurant, bar or café advertises its own special pea soup. When the canals are frozen, ice skaters often stop at small stalls along the way during their long trips to eat pea soup for sustenance. Dutch pea soup is a meal in itself, full of fresh winter vegetables and chunks of bacon and sausage. A simple accompaniment of a few slices of dark rye bread is enough. There are probably as many different ways of making Dutch pea soup as there are people in Holland. For the best result, make the soup the day before required to improve its flavor. Besure that when you made it, it's not going to thunder or light outside, because if it does the peasoup won't be any good anymore. Recipe: 6-8 servings1½ cups green split peas3 quarts water1 pound pork shoulder/boiling bacon1½ teaspoons salt3 leeks, thinly sliced or2 medium onions, sliced1 stalk celery, chopped3...

The Dutch see the New Year in with an ear-shattering bang! All over the country fireworks are let off at midnight and toasts are drunk with champagne.New Year’s Eve is a family occasion. Everyone gathers after dinner and the whole evening is spent playing family games or watching television. There are lots of drinks and snacks, of course, but no Dutch New Year’s Eve celebration would be complete without oliebollen (Dutch doughnuts) sprinkled with powdered sugar.Twenty-five oliebollen sounds like a lot, but be warned! In some Dutch families ten oliebollen per person are consumed on a typical New Year’s Eve. And why not ?! They're yummie. Recipe for approximately 25 oliebollen:500 grams white, all-purpose flouryeast2 dl lukewarm milk1 egg150 grams raisins1 large tablespoon mixed candied peel1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped finepeel of half a lemon, gratedpinch of saltoil for...

The view is excellent, magnificence, and i know. You have a oceanview, you are surrounded by nature. There are many different birds (it's a perfect place if you whould like see birds) and other animals, the restaurant got a (very) little zoo. You can dive(there's a little wreck) and you can hire a boot for diving and for fishing. They also rent a apartment with a view over the sea. Spareribs, Saté, pancake's, Steak, many different fish, which you als can take home(fresh or frozen) with you.icescream: You can choose your own icecream from different kinds of flavours

The food is excellent, none of us 4 was unsatisfied with the different dishes we ordered, really wonderful cooking, and I wanted to drink a good dutch beer so I had it, the wonderful thing is that they gives you also a special menw in English when they find out you are a stranger!I kept really wonderful thoughts about the Waag restaurant!

It is thanks to Carin *Catnl* we had this excellent dinner in the wonderful restaurant in Amsterdam: In De WaagI shall admit objectively this is one of the best restaurants in Amsterdam, the decoration and service are just perfect!not talking yet about the food!

You rather drink tea than coffee? No problem at all! I just love tea, I think you can wake me up in the middle of the night for a cuppa, lol :-)) When visiting people just tell them that you drink tea instead of coffee. As a standard they make coffee when there are visitors, but it is not unpolite to ask for tea instead.

The Dutch drink lots and lots of coffee, litres of it! The Dutch coffee is good and strong and it is served with koffiemelk (evaporated milk) and sugar. Having ordinary milk in the coffee is not very usual. If you want to have your coffee with warm milk you should order a 'koffie verkeerd'. In the picture you can see an old-fashioned advertising sign for Kanis & Gunnik coffee, a Dutch brand of coffee.

When thinking of lunch or breakfast then I would say the best thing to have is a sandwich with cheese! Yummy! The Dutch cheeses are great, and are my absolute favourite. The unfortunate thing is though that they often taste less bought abroad than at home in The Netherlands. Hahaha, maybe we keep the best for ourselves, lol ;-))The most well-known is probably the Gouda, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the most eaten one as well. This cheese comes in several tastes varying on the stages of maturity. jong is the least mature one and is mild in flavour. Belegen (my favourite) is much tastier. Oud or old cheese is very strong in taste, with a grainy flaky texture. Well-known abroad is the Edam cheese (the small round cheeses with the red wax around it). Strangely enough this cheese in not eaten that much in The Netherlands itself. Edammer cheese is semi-soft in texture but slightly...
