Football Euro Championship 2008
by ATLC
Wish I were a football fan. I would have so much fun. Missing it all now because I don't care. But how true is this? When my country earns a place in the quarter finals of the Euro Champs 2004, I wear orange and cheer like the best of them!

Pieterpad, long distance walk
by ATLC
This is a north-south (or vice-versa) walking route in the eastern part of The Netherlands, nearly 500 kms long.Long distance walking is a very old tradition in Europe. But in our small country, this is about the longest route you can make (unless you walk in circles, of course!).Many of such routes are to do with very old commercial roads, or pelgrimages and such. These routes would exist for centuries.By lack of such a route in The Netherlands, there were 2 Dutch ladies who simply made one up! They walked and described the route between 1975-1981. So there will be a 30 year anniversary in 2011!The name Pieterpad is derived simply from the northern-most destination Pieterburen and the southern-most destination Pietersberg near Maastricht. Hence: Pieterpad.
You need a map of the route. Now, it is a bit protected, you will have to google quite deeply to find it but here is a google map...

Fierljeppen
by ATLC
Fierljeppen is a traditional Dutch sport and it seems to be one of the most complex athletic sports. Why? I couldn't tell! Even pronouncing the word (it is Frisian) is rather hard for a local Dutchie. The Frisians have been doing this for a 1000 years, practically to be able to cross the streams between the grass fields.--A jump consists of short and intense sprint to the pole (polsstok), jumping and grabbing it, then climbing to the top while trying to control the pole's forward. Then you jump off at the other end of the water if you're lucky. If not, you get wet.--Tradionally, one jumps over a stretch of water to the other side. Which makes it even more spectacular to watch.
In Zwaagwesteinde (Province Friesland) you can do this sport. After instruction and practising a bit, you go for a walk and fierljep across the streams. At the end of the day you can participate in a competition....
Hiking in Holland
by Pijlmans
The Netherlands appear to be a small and overcrowded country, however there still is quite a lot of nature to explore! On my Netherlands page you will find descriptions and links to websites with information about long and short hikes in the Netherlands.Although these sites are mostly in Dutch, you can easily find information about marked walking routes, for which you only need to know the starting-point.

Racefiets in NL (Bicycle Training in Nederlands)
by lekkerding_1
I arrived in the last week of February to do a race in Belgium (Het Volk Ronde), but was snowed in New York and missed the event. I trained for 2 weeks in Holland; everyday was hedious conditions...snow, very strong wind, sleet. It was excellent. I came back to the states with weight loss and banged on form, thinking nothing of our bad weather in the states compared to Holland. Boy was it fun. My tip to racers. Utrecht region is all flat lands, but windy. Brabrant is in the southern part of the country and hilly (Valkenburg). Special lanes are designated for fiets, but I felt uncomfortable riding 45-50 kmh with pedestrians and commuting cyclist there.
Biking in Holland is second nature to most of the population. I noticed I was the only person in two weeks wearing a helmet. I noted some locals took it as geeky. Don't reduce yourself to a follow fashion monkey, wear your brain buckets in...
