De Hoep, Visitors Center in the Dunes

by Pijlmans

The dunes in the province Noord-Holland are a great place for hiking and several marked trails are present.Much of the water for Noord-Holland comes from the dunes. The watercompany PWN maintains the dunes and has a visitors center called De Hoep in the Noord-Holland Dunes Reservation (Noordhollands Duinreservaat, NHD). From here several trails start:Blue route (named Kleintje Johanneshof) 2.3 kmYellow route (named Leppad) 4 kmRed route (named Rondje Infiltratiegebied) 6.5 kmGreen route (named Rondje Bosreservaat) 6.5 kmOrange route (named Beschutte route) 12.5 kmBlack route (named Duindoornroute) 17 kmThere is a big free parking at the visitors center. Entrance to the dunes is 1.50 euro. You can get your ticket at the machine at the entrance (see the pictures), which ONLY ACCEPTS COINS! Foresters might ask you for your ticket during your stay. The visitors center is open Tuesday-Sunday...

Open air "Black Market"

by JREllison

Beverwijkse Bazaar began on the 13th September 1980 in the former flower and vegetable auction hall in Beverwijk. Today it is a mega tourist attraction. At first it was knoiwn as a ‘Zwarte’ Markt (‘Black’ Market). We spent an afternoon there "shopping" and sampling the different foods offered. To get to the bazaar from Amsterdam take the A9 toward Alkmaar, go through the Wijkertunnnel and leave the motorway at exit 8

Bike riding in Holland

by JREllison

Kinderdijk is a 17th century windmill park just a few miles from Rotterdam. It includes cycling and walking paths. Also there is a canal boat that provides a tour by waterway. There were four of us traveling together and we chose the bicycles. The bike trails are paved, wide and importantly for seniors they are flat, no hills to ride up.

Borger - walk or bike along the Dutch Dolmens

by vtveen

The Dutch province of Drenthe has 52 of the 54 remaining Dutch dolmens, or better megalithic tombs. These huge stone graves were built by farmers belonging to the ‘Funnel Beaker Culture’. They started building these tombs more than 5.000 year ago. They used the boulders, scattered around in this area, which were transported to Drenthe during the last ice period.Borger, a small village in Drenthe, is more or less the capital of the Dutch Dolmens. In and around the village are 16 of these ‘hunebedden’ (Dutch for megalithic tomb) and just outside Borger is the ‘Hunebedcentrum’ (a museum and megalithic tombs information centre). Here you may find more information about the people, who made these tombs, their way of living and much more. The best way to see the dolmens in the landscape is to walk or bike. In the museum or Tourist Information Centre in Borger are several brochures available...

Kootwijkerzand - drifting sand

by vtveen

This part of the Veluwe has an unique scenery with the biggest drifting sands area of Europe. Surrounded by forests and just close to the very small village of Kootwijk, it is one of the most remote parts of the Netherlands. Therefore it is such a pity that tourist facilities, like camping sites and holiday parks are coming closer and closer to this unique spot. The only way to explore “Kootwijkerzand” is to walk. Personally we prefer to stroll around without using paths. It is such an amazing landscape, sometimes the sand is almost white, other parts are covered by moss or small pines. And always the sand is drifting in the wind and the landscape is constantly changing. Sometimes it seems to be a little Sahara, specially when temperatures in the sun reach 50 degrees Celsius !!If you don’t like to walk, just find a nice spot on one of the hills (they are called a ‘fort’) and just sit down...

Breda

by benidormone

Breda is a historical city with 160.000 inhabitants in the south of the Netherlands. The picture that I used is not from the old city, just to show you that Breda is more than history. Breda has lots to offer musea, monuments lots of shops. Once a month the shops are open on Sunday. The Galderse meren is a great place to go for a swim in summer, it has also an official nude beach.

Enkhuizen

by benidormone

A great place to visit is The Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen. Here you can see how people were living and working when The IJsselmeer was The Zuiderzee. In 1932 the enclosure dam (afsluitdijk) was ready and The Zuiderzee became The IJsselmeer and The Waddenzee. It had a great impact on the people who lived there.
