Explore Amsterdam and enjoy it!

by Dutchnatasja

This is the Keizersgracht. Many of the 7,150 national monuments and 500 listed buildings in Amsterdam can be found along the city?s many canals, making the city centre not only a must-see for architecture buffs, but also a visual delight for the layman. Amsterdam?s old city centre numbers some 20,000 buildings, one-third of which are more than 150 years old.

De Meinweg - bike tour

by vtveen

National Park ‘De Meinweg’ is one of the most unknown national parks in the Netherlands. It is situated in the province of Limburg between Roermond and Vlodrop. The landscape is not as flat as in the rest of the country and not as hilly as in parts of South Limburg. All together an ideal area for a bike tour and to enjoy the very varied landscape. With vast forests, heathland and small pools. It is said there should be vipers in the park, but to be honest we didn’t see them.Best place to start your bike tour is the information centre along the road from Roermond to Vlodrop. Here you can also get a free brochure of the bike tour. The tour through the park is 15 km’s long, but you may extend it through the neighbourhood with some rural villages, an old castle (hotel/restaurant) and a water mill. For rental bikes: Elfenmeer Herkenbosch (0475 – 531689)Boshotel Vlodrop (0475 –...

Kampen

by tini58de

Kampen was our first stop on the second trip to the Netherlands. We had read that it was supposed to be quite nice and in fact, it was not only "quite" nice, it was VERY nice!!!The facades of the houses were stunning, the squares and streets are impressive and very different one from the other and the churches (and there sure are quite a few of them) were very special. Kampen has 3 city gates, all of which are different. Great place to visit!

Workum

by tini58de

Workum is a lovely Frisean village with lots of nice houses and narrow streets, a huge church, a weighing house, an inviting market place and lots of pottery places that invite you to do (window) shopping! Do not miss it!

Tip Photo
Urk

by tini58de

Urk is supposed to be the nicest fishing village in Friesland - and although I have not seen all that many, I must agree! This village has it all: a lovely marina, small streets with cozy little houses, a wonderful lighthouse - enough to let you enjoy it for hours!!!The interesting part of this village is that it used to be an island, but after the dam was built that seperated the Zuiderzee from the ocean, and land was won, Urk became a mainland village. Still today fishery is the main income for the people of this village.

Amsterdam

by tini58de

Amsterdam was our first city in the Netherlands to visit. It is huge, but the sightseeing spots are well within walking distance or easily to be reached by boat! The old city center is shaped like a horseshoe, surrounded by three well known canals called the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. To the north of the city you will find the impressive 19th Century Central Train Station plus lots of museums, cultural and social activities. For more information please have a look at my Amsterdam page..

Harlingen

by tini58de

Harlingen will always be special to me: not the city - no, we had seen even nicer ones, but the accomodation that we chose: a real harbor crane with a beautiful interior and the most spectacular views! For more information, please have a look at my Harlingen page

Zaanse Schans

by margaretvn

This area on the river Zaan has typical Zaan houses, windmills and buidlings. In some of the windmills you can still buy their products - I really like the mustard mill. All the houses are built from wood and coated in tar. Stone houses would have sunk into the peat earth. Here is also the very first "Albert Heijn" shop which dates from 1887 - nowadays there is an AH in almost every village in the country. There is also a cheese making factory and a great pancake restuarant- My favourite pancake is always apple and bacon and then topped with syrup. While wandering around you are often breathin in the heavy sweet smell of cocoa from the chocolate factories along the Zaan.
