The Boymens-Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam

by Paul2001

The Boymens-Van Beuningen Museum of Rotterdam is one of the best collections of art in all of the Netherlands. The gallery has a good overall collections that is very representative of the various periods of art history. There are strong works by such artist as Bruegel, Rembrandt and Rubens representing Dutch art during the Golden Age. However unlike Amsterdam's Rijkmuseum, this gallery's collection extends into more modern periods. Therefore there are works by Monet, Van Gogh and Kandinsky. There is also an fine display of contemporary works that might interest people who are more freethinking about the question "what is art?" Some of these pieces certainly are challenging for the viewer.

Theme park: MADURODAM

by ATLC

I've always enjoyed going to Madurodam once every few years as the park and miniatures are constantly changed. A young soldier called George Maduro was killed in WW II and his parents built this park in honour of him. The mayor of Madurodam is always a person younger than 18 and its first mayor was princess Beatrix, now queen of The Netherlands. The Netherlands highlights, all in miniature buildings and scenes.01 Sept 2001 -17 March 2002: 09.00 - 18.00 hrs.18 March 2002 - 30 June 2002: 09.00 - 20.00 hrs.01 July 2002 - 31 August 2002: 09.00 - 22.00 hrs.01 Sept. 2002 -31 December 2002: 9.00 - 18.00 hrs.Admission: € 10 adult € 7 children

The 'Zaanse Schans'.

by Alphons

The 'Zaanse Schans'. The area was named 'De Zaanse Schans' after an entrenchment which was erected in 1574 to hold back Spanish troops at the beginning of the Eighty Years War between the Netherlands and Spain. People work and live in the Zaanse Schans: they feel at home in the area and keep alive the glory which this industrial district saw in the golden age. Visiting the Zaanse Schans, you will see a situation characteristic of the landscape of that district until late in the nineteenth century. The dikes were probably built as early as the thirteenth century, the first villages were built along these at a later date. Until late in the last century these were typical 'dike-villages'This is from the offical website.

Cycling is a MUST

by GYOW

Cycling in Holland is one of the best experiences to be had in Holland, its nothing like cycling elsewhere. The bikes are designed for comfort and viewing. You sit bolt upright in what people regard as an old fashioned style. However once you have been on one you find out why.... you are sitting up as in the comfort of an armchair, very little exertion is required as its so flat. This means you can look at the view and cycle for many miles with no pain what so ever! As a bonus the traffic has to give way to you 80% of the time and you have a purpose built cycle path for miles and miles... it has to be done! This is the very best way to view the bulb fields in April

Ooijpolder – fascinating Dutch landscape

by vtveen

Although most of the polders are in the western part of the country, the Ooijpolder (and some other polders) are stretching from Nijmegen till the German town of Emmerich. On one side surrounded by the rivers Waal and Rhine and on the ‘land’ side by the hills of ‘Beek’ and ‘Ubbergen’. We started our biketour at the so called Hollandsch-Duitsch Gemaal. This pumping-station was built in 1933 and is still responsible for draining away the water from the German polders into the river Waal. Our route follows the signs (ANWB) of the ‘Ooij route’ and it was very easy to find our way.Main parts of the trip we were biking on the dikes, which meant we had great views of the beautiful scenery of meadows, agricultural land, orchards and wetlands with the typical willows. But most impressive are the numerous ponds, pools, small canals and the river Rhine and Waal with everywhere a lot of water...

'Dwarsgracht'- bike or boat trip

by vtveen

The hamlet of Dwarsgracht is a real alternative for the famous, but very touristy, town of Giethoorn. Although just 3 km's away it is a complete different world. The same canal(s), small bridges, boats and thatched roof houses. But in Dwarsgracht you will hardly see any tourist. There is just one café restaurant ('De Otterskooi') and this is an ideal starting point for either a boat trip with a so called 'whispering boat' or for a bike tour along the canals and lakes. At 'De Otterskooi' you can rent them both.Or just walk along the main canal through the village and enjoy the views over the water, the houses, the flowers, the birds and further away waving reed.Dwarsgracht is signposted from Giethoorn and you have to follow a narrow, sometimes winding road.
