Delden – walk around Castle Twickel

by vtveen

Today Delden is a quiet and nice town in the middle of the province of Overijssel in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It was already a city in the year 1333 and became a small fortified town. A lot of the historic buildings – among them a water tower and the Blasius Church - still exist and can be seen during a town walk. There is also a salt museum to visit. But the main attraction is Castle Twickle, located just outside town. This is one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands. It has been built in 1347 and even today the castle is lived in by private persons. That is also the reason why we (and you) only could take a look at the outside of the castle; the gardens however are open for public. The rural estate - 4000 acres - is a perfect place for a walk or a hike. It is an area of natural beauty with splendid forest, waterways, small meadows, farmhouses, a water mill...

Broek in Waterland, walking a picturesque village

by vtveen

'Broek in Waterland' is one of the places we do like very much and is one of the ‘must do’s’ when having relatives from abroad. It is almost unbelievable to find such an authentic and picturesque place less than ten kilometres from Amsterdam without the crowds in other more touristy places around.Broek in Waterland is surrounded by ditches and meadows and the ‘centre’ of the village is the Havenrak, a widening of the Ee rivulet, which flows through Broek. The village has a couple of narrow streets, all lined with the traditional ‘Broeker houses’: having just one floor, due to the weak ground, constructed with a timber frame and walls and most of them are painted in the famous ‘Broeker grey’. Some of them do have stunning decorated entrance doors. During our last visit (mid July) the whole village seemed to be full with flowering hydrangeas, which provided some extra charm. Best way...

Vollenhove: cycling along 'wieden' and 'weiden'

by vtveen

wieden = man-made lakes by the excavation of peat weiden = green green meadows We made the ‘Rietsnijdersroute’ (Reed cutters route) from Vollenhove; one of the prettiest places in northwest Overijssel. Less known and therefore less touristy. This cycle route led us through beautiful countryside and picturesque villages. Nature is dominated by lakes, canals and ditches. That water creates a rich bird life and during our bike trip we saw a lot of herons, swans, ducks, geese, lapwings and other unknown species. We biked early May and between Vollenhove and Blokzijl were still a number of blooming tulip fields. ‘Of course’ reed is/was everywhere and we saw on several places still large piles of cut reed.Besides Vollenhove with its historic centre and stately estates, we biked through Blokzijl with its beautiful harbour and typical Dutch villages as Dwarsgracht, Giethoorn and...

Canal Cruises

by traveldave

A fun and leisurely way to see the city of Amsterdam, and to get an idea of its layout, is to take one of the canal cruises offered by several different companies. These popular cruises run from many points around the city. They last anywhere from one hour to two and a half hours, and many leave every 30 minutes. Visitors ride in comfortable glass-enclosed sightseeing launches, which generally seat about 40 people. The canal cruises are conducted in many languages, so visitors will have to be sure to choose a cruise in their language. Tour guides provide colorful and interesting narration explaining the sights and attractions that pass by.Although most canal cruises are geared toward sightseeing, there are other types, such as dinner cruises, musical cruises, romantic candlelight cruises, and even pizza cruises.

The Canals of Amsterdam

by traveldave

The canals of Amsterdam are so famous that the city has been called the "Venice of the North." Canals have been used to some extent in Amsterdam since the fourteenth century. However, it was in the seventeenth century, Amsterdam's golden age, when the old part of the city was laid out in a semicircular pattern created by three great concentric canals, the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, and the Prinsengracht. The canals are part of a network of waterways that allowed freight to be transported by barge to all parts of the city. Hundreds of smaller canals radiate outward from the three main canals, crossing the semicircle, and creating 90 islands. Amsterdam's canals are crossed by 1,280 bridges within the city limits. It is these canals that give Amsterdam its unique character and charm. Even today, the 47 miles (75 kilometers) of canals in Amsterdam are used to transport goods into the...

Noordwijkerhout: biking along blooming bulbs

by vtveen

A very Dutch tip: biking along blooming bulb fields.Just another way to see these stunning flower fields in the Bulb and Dune Region in the western part of the Netherlands. We started our bike trip from the Tourist Information Centre (VVV) of Noordwijkerhout, more or less in the heart of the Bulb Region. They offer a couple of bike tours with different lengths (ours was about 45 km’s) through the bulb fields; just ask at the office. It is possible to rent bikes in Noordwijkerhout. We had a wonderful day with a lot of sunshine and were at the right moment (April 23th) to see the fields in bloom. As soon as we left Noordwijkerhout we pedalled through the bulb fields, mostly on special bike paths and very quiet side roads. Our route passed the Keukenhof, so it is possible to visit this famous flower garden. Otherwise take a look at the Castle Keukenhof (built in 1642); its park can be visited...

Noordoostpolder - auto tour to the tulips

by vtveen

The Netherlands is famous for its tulips and other bulbs. Everybody knows the Keukenhof and the so called 'Bloembollenstreek' (Bulb Region) in the western part of my country between Haarlem and Leiden. But there is a complete other way to see these wonderful flowers. In one of our polders, the 'Noordoostpolder' is the biggest area with tulips in the Netherlands. Late April/early May there are lots of activities around the flowering time of the tulips. Everywhere along the road you can buy some fresh tulips for a couple of euro's.We made the signposted car tour along the 'Bollenroute'; this is 100 km long route through the Noordoostpolder, which shows a lot of tulip fields. Besides it is more or less amazing if you realise the fact that you are driving on the bottom of a former sea.Along the route are a lot of interesting sites to make a stop, among them:- an information centre and show...

Marken: loop walk to the lighthouse

by vtveen

Till 1957 the small fishing village of Marken was an island in the IJsselmeer (the former Zuiderzee). From that moment on it was connected by the mainland of the Province of Noord-Holland by a dike. The village is situated rather close to Amsterdam and part of the municipality of Waterland. About 2.000 people are living on the peninsula. Marken (together with Volendam) is one of the most well-known tourist destinations in the Netherlands; it has its own charm with the quaint green colored wooden houses on poles and the very colorful traditional costumes.Especially during the holidays it can be rather overcrowded in the narrow streets between the car park and the harbour. To avoid the crowds and to explore the ‘other part’ of the peninsula I can recommend making a loop walk to the lighthouse. We made it in December on a sunny winter day and it was amazing: just a couple of other people, a...
