Schagen – very typical Dutch bike trip

by vtveen

Staying in spring (late April) for a couple of days in Schagen, we decided to make a bike trip through the bulb fields in this part of the Netherlands. In the Top of North Holland (Kop van Noord-Holland) they are proud having the world’s largest area of blooming bulb fields. It is less well known as the so called Bollenstreek (nearby the Keukenhof), which means it is less touristy and much more authentic. We did this trip on April 22 and were very lucky with the weather: blue skies and almost no wind. We passed a couple of nice quaint villages like Schagerbrug and ‘t Zand (with its typical ‘vlotbrug’ / floated bridge), but most of the time we were biking through the flat Dutch countryside with vast fields of blooming colorful tulips and hyacinths. But we saw also grazing cows, sheep, ditches and canals, farmhouses and a lot of water birds.Callantsoog, with a church dating back to the...

Den Bosch

by sim1

I have been making a sort of goodbye tour through Holland before I moved to Canada and one of the cities I visited was Den Bosch (Province of Noord-Brabant). And this beautiful town in the south of Holland really deserves a visit. The canals, the small streets and beautiful old houses are so picturesque. I can recommend visiting the Cathedral "St.-Jan". Besides that a boat tour of the "Binnen Dieze" is a lot of fun as it follows the river and goes partly underneath the city. Besides that there is lots and lots to more to see and do here. I've been to this city twice, but I wouldn't mind going here again! http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/70d70/

The city of Groningen

by sim1

This is a beautiful city in the north of Holland and has a special meaning to me, there are so many memories I have of this city. It is such a beautiful place, quite unknown, but really well worth a visit!I was born in this part of Holland, but I moved to the east of Holland many years ago and now I live in Sweden. Although I don`t want to go back to live here, it is still a very special to place for me. Saying goodbye to this town was a strange thing to do, it is hard to realize I won`t come back here so often anymore. I want to share a bit of my visit to Groningen with you. Goto my Groningen page and I want to take you by the hand and walk with you through this town. I would like to show you around in this city and share some of my memories with you.http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/709b2/

Nijmegen

Next stop on my tour through the Netherlands is a town called Nijmegen (in the Province of Gelderland). It is an old town, located in the east of Holland but a bit more to the south than where I used to live.Nijmegen is a city built along the river Waal and has got about 150.000 inhabitants. Nijmegen is a very old city, it was founded some 2000 years ago by Emperor Traian of the Romans, as a camp to protect the border of the Roman Empire. Charles the Great (Charlemagne) also lived in the city for quite some time. Besides the few old buildings, which you can see on my Nijmegen page, there is not a lot left of the old Nijmegen. On 22nd of Februari 1944 the city was heavily bombarded by the allied in the assumption that they were attacking a German town. The city centre was completely demolished. The city is nice, but in my opinion not that special. But there is one event in Nijmegen that...

Kinderdijk

by sim1

I have to tell you all about my visit to the Kinderdijk. More windmills together than you can ever imagine! The Kinderdijk is located 60 miles south of Amsterdam and very close to Rotterdam (the Province of Zuid-Holland). Here nineteen glorious windmills, all dating from 1740, compete for your attention. Kinderdijk is one of the best known sights of Holland. In 1997, the Kinderdijk mills were placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. And the best way to get a good view of all these windmills is by taking a boat trip! And what a luck I had with the weather!! It was a beautiful spring day, blue sky, sun shining, and nice warm weather! I couldn't wish for anything better. It was off season, so there weren't many tourist, and I had a wonderful time. I always was under the impression that the Kinderdijk was one big tourist trap. A site only there for the foreign tourists. But I was so wrong!...

Amsterdam

Amsterdam! This city in the Province of Noord-Holland has a lot to offer. There is so much to see and do here! You really shouldn`t miss a visit to Amsterdam when you come to The Netherlands. But there is also much more to the Netherlands than only Amsterdam :-)) I've given up to try and give you a complete view of Amsterdam, because that would be impossible. Instead I have focused on a few points to give you some more information about that. On my Amsterdam page you can find tips and links about the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum, the Palace on the Dam, The house of Anne Frank (very impressive, an absolutely must see), and also street images of the city, like the canals and the street artists. And as I am constantly working on my pages, over time I will probably add more tips.http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/71211/

Castle Doorwerth

by sim1

Castle Doorwerth is a castle in the eastern part of Holland (Province of Gelderland), not so far from the city of Arnhem. I visited the castle in September 2001.To enter the castle you have to go over a drawbridge to get inside the castles walls. We were the only ones on the inner court, it looked quite romantic with the autumn sun shining on the castle. The castle dates back to the 13th century. The castle looks nice on the outside, but I found the interior very disappointing, because there was only a little bit of furniture. The main part of the castle was made into a museum. Inside the castle there is a museum of local art and the Dutch Hunting Museum. I didn't like either of the exhibitions very much. The atmosphere of being in a castle was totally gone due to these exhibitions. What did impress me was the story about the castle during the second world war. When you enter the castle...

Enkhuizen and the Zuiderzee Museum

by sim1

In Enkhuizen you can find "The Zuiderzee museum", which is an open air museum that shows life around 1900 in the fishing villages at the Zuiderzee. And it actually felt if I was there during that time. It was like I could see these three fisherman sitting in the harbour chatting with each other, telling stories to each other about their fishing expeditions. I could smell the pipe that the fishingman in the middle is smoking, but also feel the fresh seabreeze, the sound of the seagulls and the smell of fresh fish that was just brought in.This was the feeling I got at the Zuiderzee museum, but it also felt like this when I walked through Enkhuizen. This is a very old village, with a lively harbour. Everyone was relaxing and having a good time. There were a lot of boats going in and out of the harbour. The following day there was going to be a clipper race on the lake, so it must have been...
