Amsterdam, capital of The Netherlands

by ATLC

I am by no means a specialist on Amsterdam though I worked there for a year. You'll find a long city walk on my Amsterdam page along some highlighs and some backroads. On the photo not the usual Amsterdam street and canal scene but the Tuschinski theatre in Amsterdam, that is a story in itself. --See my Amsterdam page--

Tip Photo
Utrecht, capital of province Utrecht

by ATLC

Also a university city. And the location of my first VT meeting on April 6th 2002. Very lively city center with canals (Oude Gracht). The Utrechtse Domtoren (belfry tower) is definitely worth a visit.--See my Utrecht page which will be updated with a load of new photo's soon.--

Vreeland, village in province Utrecht

by ATLC

I have always called this the most beautiful village in The Netherlands. Not only is it dear to me because I lived there for 5 years but also because it is truly beautiful with the grandeur of the past still present in the large houses. The famous river Vecht runs right through it and in summer there is plenty of boating and the many blooming rhododendrons make the place even prettier.--See my Vreeland page for more pictures. --

Tip Photo
Brielle, Province Zuid-Holland

by ATLC

What can I say. This is my hometown for 15 years now and a truly remarkable and historical place. It looks like a miniature Amsterdam and has 400 registered monuments.--See my Brielle page for 100+ photo's and a great many travel tips--

Tip Photo
De Rotte, area north of Rotterdam

by ATLC

De Rotte is actually a river. Man made lakes and cycling/walking paths make this a place where the people of the big city Rotterdam can relax and engage in sports, swimming and recreation. The landscape is old: dykes, farms and this wonderful windmill.--See also my De Rotte page--

Tip Photo
Bunnik, province Utrecht

by ATLC

Bunnik itself is just an ordinary village. But it has Fort Vechten and Fort Rijnauwen, both part of the defense line Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (NHW) built in the first half of the 19th century. The defense line consists of 23 forts along a 85 km. line from Dordrecht to the IJsselmeer (formerly known as Zuiderzee). The Hollands Waterlinie is on the nomination for World Heritage List by UNESCO.--Have a look at my Bunnik page--

Tip Photo
Rotterdam, province Zuid-Holland

by ATLC

My favourite of Dutch large cities. Definitely because of it's vibrant atmosphere, almost un-Dutch in modern architecture and lifestyle.Rotterdam people are fun, down-to-earth and love to party. Shopping and cultural life is large, as can be expected in a large city. In fact, many festivals are turning their back on Amsterdam, choosing Rotterdam instead as a base.Of course this is also the largest port in the world.--See my Rotterdam page for about 50 tips and around 100 pictures.--

Tip Photo
Doorn, province Utrecht

by ATLC

-Huis Doorn is a castle where he German Kaiser Wilhelm II lived in exile from 1918 until his death in 1941.Huis Doorn hosts countless precious objects and art from his household. It still looks like it is being lived in.Have a look at my Doorn page!-

Utrecht

by sim1

Saturday 6th April 2002, a VT meeting close to my home : Utrecht!!! As many of you probably know, I love going to VT meetings. And this meeting was so close to my home! I didn't have to think twice, I had to go! So within 5 minutes after the announcement of this meeting on the forum, hahaha, I was already on the list of people going here. And like all meetings I have been to, I had a great time!In the picture : Back row, left to right: Nighthawk, Sim1, sandradvp, nantosvelta, broekie Front row, left to right: igraine, tjello, atlc, xowe And what I liked most here were the beautiful canals in Utrecht! I loved strolling along the canals, on this beautiful spring day. The sun shining brightly, reflecting in the water, the beautiful old houses along the canals.... it looked so beautiful! I never knew before that Utrecht was such a nice city.http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/6f8a0/

Tip Photo
Gouda, province Zuid-Holland

by ATLC

My Gouda page is special because I had the pleasure of showing around a Welsh TV crew in April 2003. Gouda. Not only city of the world famous cheese and candles but also of the St. Janskerk (St. Johns Church). It is the longest church in The Netherlands (123 metres) and dates from the middle ages. The St. Janskerk has a breathtaking collection of 16th, 17th century stained glass windows depicting biblical stories and periods from (Dutch) history. Every single window (over 50 of them) deserve hours of study. But even without that, one can enjoy strolling around this church and looking at the windows as if they were a cartoon. The church also boasts a very fine pipe organ and played its part in Dutch history.
