Bank holidays

by ATLC

The Netherlands doesn't really know the bank holiday feature. But there are some extra days which other countries don't have.Free days for everyone are:- the Monday after Easter Sunday- Ascension Day (a Thursday, 5 weeks after Easter)- the Monday after Pentecost Sunday (10 days after Ascension day)- 26th of December (2nd Christmas Day)- New Year's Day- 30th of April (Queen's Day)- 5th of May (Liberation Day) every 5th year Usually a few big shops are open on Easter Monday and Pentecost Monday. Like IKEA and other furniture giants.Supermarkets will not be open, nor any other local shop.Usually restaurants and pubs will only be open on reservation. Before you go anywhere, check to see if a restaurant, museum or park is open.

Bike

by ATLC

There are more bikes than Dutchies. And the canals are filled with them as well. In Amsterdam your bike insurance will be more expensive than your bike as one's bike gets stolen often. Why? It is the best way to get oneself from one place to another. There are special bike lanes along the roads and traffic lights. A familiar sight is mothers bringing their children to school on their bikes. So rain clothes are als a necessary item. After bringing the kids to school, the women will go shopping, using the bike as a trolley for numerous shopping bags. Lock your bike! Don't only lock your bike. Keep it behind lock and key! Someone will steal off the useful parts leaving you with the frame locked to a tree or wherever you left it.

KISS 3 TIMES!

by ATLC

The Dutch appreciate a firm handshake. That's for one.Another thing is: since about 20 years, friends and family shake hands and meanwhile kiss each other 3 times, alternating cheeks.I remember when I was little, people used to only kiss once, or maybe twice. But the custom from "below the rivers" (meaning rivers Maas and Waal) spread all over the country and now we kiss three times. You should know this because if you kiss once or twice, and the other person means to kiss you three times, then you get some awkward movements! Personally I prefer a hug!

by sandravdp

Watch out when you go shopping. Never place your money in your behind trouserpockets or backpack, someone might steal it. Watch out in trams and at train or subwaystations thieves can easily steal your luggage here.

by gripdxd

If your staying outside of Amsterdam and taking a taxi, that's no problem. *Just make sure your driver knows where your hotel is and don't allow them to turn off course if following a group of taxis. They will take you for a RIDE!!! if they can. This women tried to pull a fast one on me, but being a big bad New Yorker, I didn't let her get away with nothing. Instead, we were dumped on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere in the wee A.M. Fortunately, we were only like 5 blocks from our hotel (that she couldn't find?)

The main streets from the Central train station to Dam Square...the restaurants are okay, the food is okay and over priced and in general typical tourist stuff. Get away from them and discover the real places to eat and shop.

By all means, Stay Away from...

by Willem_oa

By all means, Stay Away from the Burgers Zoo in Arnhem. It's incredibly congested, packed with small children running and screaming. From what I saw, there was little wildlife around. The Burgers Safari, which used to be a seperate area where you could drive in with your car to observe African Wildlife can now only be observed from an enclosed walkway quite a distance from the animals!

by Willem_oa

Kasteel de Haar was the second worst attraction I ran into during my stay in the Netherlands. First, you have to pay to get into the grounds. Then, you must pay to visit the castle, and even then, you cannot explore on your own, but are led around on a very slow, dutch-only tour. Skip this place; there are plenty of other castles in Holland. eg. Muiderslot, in Muiden or the small but interesting Kasteel Radboud in Medemblik.

Scheveningen, a seaside resort...

by Willem_oa

Scheveningen, a seaside resort place in The Hague is not worth visiting aside from Madurodam. There isn't much to see really, aside from a huge pier, a boring aquarium packed with youngsters, a casino, and a giant trampoline with tons of little kids bouncing up and down. There is some cheap clothes shopping if you're in to that stuff, as well as some restaurants along the seaside. If you are a true giant trampoline centre fan, try to appear like a young child and visit the TRAMPOLINE CENTRUM SCHEVENINGENStrandweg (naast De Pier)Open: 15 april-30 sept. dag.
