by Willem_oa

I feel a little uneasy about calling the Anne Frank Huis a 'tourist trap' but it attracts huge amounts of people. All of the times I have passed by the place, there were huge queues outside the doors. If you really want to visit the place, make sure you have time on your hands.

If you want to experience a Dutch town, do NOT go to Volendam. Packed to the brim with tour buses and tourists, the harbour area really doen't have much to offer besides a multitude of gift shops and places where you can dress up in traditional costume for a photo. If you want to see a 'quaint' town, explore Edam, just down the road, which is much less busy and more attractive.

by Willem_oa

There are several 'Cheese farms' and 'Klompen Makers' in Katwoude, but take this into consideration: Their gift shops are bigger than the accessible portions of their factories! Skip them if possible!

The small village of Giethorn...

by Willem_oa

The small village of Giethorn is a tourist trap and can be packed with people, but it really is a beautiful place. The small village's roads are its canals. Wooden bridges connect the walks to the houses. You can take a boat trip or rent a canoe and take a look around this quaint village from the water.

See more than Amsterdam!!!

by ATLC

As a citizen who is proud of her country, I beg you, don't just visit Amsterdam! I know, Amsterdam is fun, lively, breathtaking, multicultural and all that. But please explore the width and heigth of this small country where the longest distance that you can drive is only 3 hours. How about:-our famous waterworks in the province Zeeland (Neeltje Jans) -the St. Jan cathedral in 's Hertogenbosch which is of the well known French grandeur, style and size -national park Hoge Veluwe where you can get free bikes to cycle round and visit St. Hubertus hunting lodge, an example of world famous architecture by Berlage- one of the world's best zoo's in Emmen (called Noorderdierenpark)- the typical flat landscape in the province Friesland of true postcard beauty- little seaside towns like Middelburg, Hellevoetsluis, Brielle, Scheveningen, Zandvoort, Staveren, Harlingen... - Groninger museum in...

Just some advice. . . buy a...

by CindyBell

Just some advice. . . buy a tram pass at a tobacco shop. It's cheaper and easier than shelling out three guilders each time you want to board a tram (or trolley, you may call them).Tobacco shops are the unlikey source for purchase of these and almost any other kind of ticket, from professional soccer to music events. They're usually holed away, in between other shops, without much signage. But every major street has a few!Watch for trams and bikes - it is their city! It's almost like Frogger your first few days - figuring out which is the sidewalk, which is the bike path, from which direction, which is for cars and trams. .. since they're all brick usually! So just be aware that friendly little bells are really bicycles bearing down on you. And trams ring their bells before they start moving - no other warning.

by mickle229

The 'Red Light District' - it's fun to see once, but I think a lot of people don't get much past this general area, and leave thinking that Amsterdam is all like this. Get a decent map and walk around the inner canals, and explore places like the Jordaan area, where real people live!

Amsterdam does house some...

by pazzer

Amsterdam does house some rather dodgy people and typically you could well get approached by 'a helper' as i like to call them. I arrived at central station at about four in the morning and it was freezing (dont go in winter)and was approached by a scruffy little chap, he was pretty polite and asked me if i needed to find a hotel and as it happens I did. I had pre-booked but I didnt have a clue where the place was, anyway, we walked about 300 yards and there i was. I took him for a coffee for his help but it was plainly obvious he was a 'H' addict and on the scrounge.

Yep, it is pretty cool to have biked the 'afsluitdijk', the thing that connects 'Noord-Holland' with 'Friesland'. But it is also booooring like hell. This thing goes on for about 30 km. No real protection against wind or rain. Nothing realy except for the lake on the southside (you can't even see the sea, because the road is not on top of the dam).Yep, we have done it.... 30 km head wind and heavy rain. Now let's go home...

When you visite very busy...

by Umfufu

When you visite very busy places like markets and things like that, you have to be carefull with you things. Especially your money. Put it far away or make sure you have it on a save place. We went to Madurodam and the place is crowded with people even when the weather is not so nice. There are all kind of people overthere and when you want to see something that you like you will forget about your purse or bag. So take care of it (always !!)
