  • If you'd like to explore The Netherlnads beyond Amsterdam and travel around as much as possible, applying for the Off-Peak Discount Card would be the right thing to do.
For just 55 Euro you get 40% discount on all the train tickets for you and another 3 friends or family members. The card is valid for 1 year, but even if you don't plan to stay here this long it worth purchasing the card.
All you have to do is to fill out a form, which can be found at any train station's tickets booth, and say that you're willing to use your discount card immediately. You, then, will get the temporary card and.... HIT THE ROAD.
Just to give you an example a single roundtrip ticket Amsterdam-Groningen costs 37.10 Euro with the card you would pay only 22.20 Euro. and if your 3 friends join too, then you already saved some money in one single journey! You can see more information HERE
One more thing: In the website it says that you'll need to bring your picture for the card, this policy has changed and you don't have to do this anymore!

  • Strippenkaart - Netherlands
    Strippenkaart
    by Nathalie_B
The card that you'll have to buy in order to use the public transport is called "strippenkaart". You can't purchase it in a bus or a tram, there are other places that sell them. If you're at a train station try grosery stores or supermarkets as well as bus ticket booths. The cheapest card costs 6.40 Euro and has 15 stripes. You'll have to stamp this card by yourself once in a tram, in a bus the driver will do it for you. Cities are divided into zones, each stripe has to be stamped for one zone. Once at the bus/tram station carefully check on the map how many zones you'll be going through and stamp accordingly. For example: If you go from zone A to zone C passing through zone B then you'll have to stamp 3 stripes, one stripe is for using the transport in general and the other 2 are for going from one point to another.
Buying your ticket from a bus driver is possible but it will cost you 3 times more!!!

Schiphol is the biggest airport in The Netherlands and in the top 5 of biggest airports in Europe. From here you can virtually go anywhere in the world. It is situated in the hearth of The Netherlands, close to Amsterdam. The airport itself is a small city with many shops and restaurants and where the fun never has to end.

Of course it is bicycle. The number one transport in the Netherlands. Can you imagine this country without the two wheels? ;-) As a tourist you can always rent one, in every city. Check for the information at the VVV (tourist information office)

Experiencing Amsterdam by boat is a very nice alternative to walking! There are various companies offering cruises - it is hard to give a tip!

It is wonderful to see the houses and beautiful facades from the boat, get to see the harbor at the river Ij and watch the houseboats to the left and right. It gives you a true Amsterdam feeling!

    Public transportation in Amsterdam

  • In Amsterdam, it is worth buying strip tickets (strippenkaart) if you plan on using the public transportation. They're valid on all buses, trams and metros and are more convenient and cheaper than buying single tickets.

On the trams, you must get them validated (ie. stamped) by the operator located toward the back of the car.

You can buy strippenkaart at tobacco shops, post offices, train station counters, ticketing machines, many bookshops and newsagencies, and at the GVB office in front of the train station.

Amsterdam has a zone system, like other large cities in Europe.

Probably because the land is so flat, everybody in the Netherland seems to have and use a bicycle. Train stations have huge bicylce racks in front, and you can rent bikes all over the country.

In large cities like Amsterdam, bicycle traffic can get pretty heavy (although there are lots of bike lanes), so watch out!

    On the train

Many of us, while traveling by train, like to take something to read, to kill the time. Dutch are not exception to the rule. Pretty much everyone on the train either reads his/her newspaper or talks on the cell phone (very loud usually). In many countries you'll be asked to take your newspaper with you when you leave the train..... not in the Netherlands!! Dutch will appreciate very much if you leave your reading material on the small table so others can enjoy it too while taking a ride.

The Netherlands is ideal to explore by bicycle.

Most train stations have supervised bicycle parking for Euro 1.10 per day.
Furthermore there are plublic unguarded bicycle locations. Parking on the pavement/street in front of a station normally is not allowed; at some stations wrongly parked bicycles will be removed!

You can take your bicycle with you on the train outside the rush hours (mo-fr: 9AM - 4.30PM and after 6PM). A day ticket for your bicycle is Euro 6.00. Bicycle may only stored in thr train at the special bicycle area indicated with a bicycle logo at the related train entrance.

At about 80 stations cou can rent a bicycle for Euro 2.85 per 20 hours. This is a membership agreement for which you pay an additional Euro 7.50 annual fee. In 2009 the NS started Electric scooter renting service at some major stations. A helmet is not required; a driver license is. The radius without charging is 60 km. Costs are Euro 7.50 for 3 hours or Euro 15.00 for 20 hours.

Just renting a bicycle at a private bicycle shop can cost up to Euro 25.00 a day depending on the type of bike.
Remember to bring passport and a deposit.
