Another option is to go by boat, this one was only for cycle and you had to pay a small fee to cross the river… Tourist trap?

    BICYCLE

This is the way to travel in the Netherlands. Almost all roads have bicycle lanes, directions being well signposted for cyclists too. The fact that the country is almost completely FLAT is also good news.

Lots of bicycles parked on the street is a common sight everywhere. I took this photo near the railway station in Breda, but it could be any other town for that matter.

Cycling is a good way to see The Netherlands - it has good cycle paths along the roads and it is flat!! They can often be hired at railway stations.

Holland is quite famous for its “cycle-friendly” attitude. Even so it is still amazing to discover the infrastructure available.
Plenty of wide paths only dedicated to bicycle and well maintained.
Cycling through a big city is not really challenging neither. Everything is thought for the cyclist, the biggest difficulty would be to deal with the other cycle, quite a lot of traffic at some point...

No, it's not a Dutch invention, but it could have well be one. We at least perfected it in many mnay ways and there are an amazing amount of variants of bycicles. As Holland is quite flat, cycling is a popular and easy way of transport. Also because it beats for sure the enormous trafficjams that are everywhere in and around towns during rushhours. Example: if I would go by car to the other end of Arnhem in rushhour it will take me around 30 minutes. If I take the bike it will take me 30 minutes. So, what's more healthy, environmental-friendly and less stressfull? Touring around The Netherlands also will give you the best (and most) impression in the best speed possible. One will drive slowly enough to see everything intesively, one can easily reach almost all places and the radius variates from 10 to 100 kiloemetres (depending on your experience). The biking-path system is the best in the world and almost everywhere biking-routes are seperated from the main road (so also safe).
By the way: the Dutch word for bicycle is FIETS (pronouciate as feets)

Not only the cycling paths are in a perfect state but all the directions are clearly indicated. This is how a junction for bicycle could look like.

The Netherlands is as flat as a pancake ("zo plat als een dubbeltje") and has extraordinary cycle infrastructure to say the least, which all makes for excellent riding. Many of the days activities are performed by bike by the Dutch who have a long tradition with their two-wheeled freind (there are more bikes than people in The Netherlands). You will notice just how many when you try to cross the road in Amstedam, so instead of dodging them... join them by renting one and cruising around yourself, it's a great way to explore the towns and cities! Just make sure you lock it all the time!!
