A Banana Train! by erik0240 The commutertrains that connects the dutch cities are bright yellow with a blue line. They´re often called "banana-trains". These trains are rather comfortable & also rather cheap to go by. A trip from the southern Netherlands to the northern parts takes about 1½-2 Hours. A ticket from Venlo (One of the most southern towns) to the capital - Amsterdam - costs around 25-30 Euros (2004). And to all you living on a tight budget: As usual when traveling public transportation; Acting really foreign & having the time to leave the train to take the next one WILL get you through the Netherlands for free. It just takes a bit longer :-) Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Samller trains, running on "abandonned" tracks by Pavlik_NL The company providing traintransport for passengers within the Netherlands is called the NS, meaning Nederlandse Spoorwegen or simply Dutch Rail. The opinions about them are rather devided, but lately they start to get a really bad name in punctuality and services. Often things go wrong and people are hopelessly delayed by their sloppiness. This does not mean that travelling by train is bad, but reckon with something going wrong and you won;t be disappointed. Hopefully the NS gets things "back on track"soon ... Leave a Comment

by Gili_S The network of train is very efficient and easy to use, Trains going frequent between the larger cities and the schedule is even fits in case you need to change trains that the waiting will not last long. Prices also relatively not that expensive, so it is affordable. Leave a Comment

by Wiley_Coyote One of the best airport in the world to sleep in. If it wasn't for Singapore, this would be it. But still, on its own Schiphol is still by far well above the competition. I have slept here so many nights that I've lost count Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

The mini Rijks gallery by jayhawk2000 Schiphol is a huge shopping mall where they happen to allow airplanes in the parking lot! We flew between Manchester and Amsterdam aboard Jet2, a decent no-frills carrier whose flights you can book on www.jet2.com. The plane taxied for ages after landing (half as long as the flight) and we wondered if we'd landed in Belgium and drove the rest of the way. Frequent trains leave the airport from directly beneath the terminal (see my TRAINS travel tip for more info). Before our return flight we had time to enjoy the many shops, cafes and even the free mini Rijksmuseum which had about a dozen Dutch paintings, including Steen and Mondriaan. These facilities are available only to air passengers travelling on the day and when shopping you have to show your boarding card. Leave a Comment
