Train & Bicycle

by pieter_jan_v

The Netherlands is ideal to explore by bicycle. Most train stations have supervised bicycle parking for Euro 1.10 per day.Furthermore there are plublic unguarded bicycle locations. Parking on the pavement/street in front of a station normally is not allowed; at some stations wrongly parked bicycles will be removed! You can take your bicycle with you on the train outside the rush hours (mo-fr: 9AM - 4.30PM and after 6PM). A day ticket for your bicycle is Euro 6.00. Bicycle may only stored in thr train at the special bicycle area indicated with a bicycle logo at the related train entrance. At about 80 stations cou can rent a bicycle for Euro 2.85 per 20 hours. This is a membership agreement for which you pay an additional Euro 7.50 annual fee. In 2009 the NS started Electric scooter renting service at some major stations. A helmet is not required; a driver license is. The radius without...

Travel cheap!!!!

by Nathalie_B

If you'd like to explore The Netherlnads beyond Amsterdam and travel around as much as possible, applying for the Off-Peak Discount Card would be the right thing to do.For just 55 Euro you get 40% discount on all the train tickets for you and another 3 friends or family members. The card is valid for 1 year, but even if you don't plan to stay here this long it worth purchasing the card. All you have to do is to fill out a form, which can be found at any train station's tickets booth, and say that you're willing to use your discount card immediately. You, then, will get the temporary card and.... HIT THE ROAD. Just to give you an example a single roundtrip ticket Amsterdam-Groningen costs 37.10 Euro with the card you would pay only 22.20 Euro. and if your 3 friends join too, then you already saved some money in one single journey! You can see more information HEREOne more thing: In the...

TRAVEL NL by TRAIN

by gkitzmil

One day we wanted to just go see the seaside and some flowers growing. We went to the train station in Maastricht, boarded the train North, and set out a plan. We did get to the seaside where we had a wonderful lunch. Our dog loved all of the train rides and the lunch spot. Yet another reason I like the NL: your dog can go nearly everywhere. We saw fields filled with flowers from the comfort of the train. We headed for Amsterdam. We have been to Amsterdam several times so we arrived at Centraal station, and walked or took a tram around the city.SO my point is, you can see a LOT by just getting on a train and riding to some part of the Netherlands to discover and explore the country. The country is a small enough land mass that you can travel by train from South to North in just a few hroursThe train system is spectacular in service.

Americans - do not rent a car in Netherlands!

by grossmusic

Holland is NOT a good place for an American to drive around. The signs are so small & set off the street, & directions are meaningless when the car rental place offers cars with no odometer. All directions say "go 8 km & turn left" - how the @#! far is 8km when you have no odometer??????Oh well. It was a bust. A very very expensive travel lesson.I literally got lost EVERY TIME I ventured away from my hotel room, & I am otherwise a very savvy traveler. The most frustrating week of my life!

Public Transportation across the Dutch borders

by pieter_jan_v

Traveling just across the border into Germany or Belgium is not always easy.Train connections are limited to a few tracks:-Roosendaal Antwerpen-Maastricht to Belgium and Aachen, Germany-Arnhem into Germany along the Rhine river-Enschede to Gronau and Münster, Germany-Oldenzaal to Hannover and BerlinMost of the train connections will take you further into germany or Belgium than you may want. For shorter border crossing visits, there are many local bus connections, but also these have their limits (especial in the weekends). An example is the Hermes bus company, that took over the Eindhoven area transport.More information about Cross border busses. Be aware that the Dutch market is on contract basis and a region can be taken over by a different company at the time new tenders are being rewarded.

Strippenkaart

by pepemorris11

You will need this if you travel by tram or train in the Netherlands. The 15-strippenkaarts can be bought for 6.90 euros (Oct 2008)at railway station kiosks or at newspaper shops, post offices and Albert Hejin supermarkets. You cannot buy this 15 strip card from the bus driver. He only sells I think 2 or 3 strips. I used this same strip for my husband and myself. We just showed it to the bus driver and told him where we wanted to go and he just stamped on the card for us. If you are doing a lot of travelling on buses, it would be wise to have a couple of these 15-strippenkaarts with you. Cheaper to buy 15 than 2 or 3 .Also read the back of this card. info would be helpful if you are going to spend less than an hour at a certain place because you may be able to make a return trip free if you keep within a certain time limit. read and if you are unsure, just check with the bus driver. most...

cheap sleep during your walk- or bikeholiday

Instead of sleep in a hotel or other in Holland there is an organisation "vrienden op de fiets" (friends on the bike) When you have a bicycle or walk vacation in Holland you can reserve at several adresses, and you'll stay with the people at home.
