Luggage storage

by ATLC

This is valid for all Dutch trainstations except Amsterdam Central, Rotterdam Central, Utrecht and The Hague Central. I searched for info on www.ns.nl for the exact costs for Rotterdam Central but it sends me in a loop and doesn't mention. I expect it will be a bit more than what is mentioned below:Small locker: 90cm deep, 45cm high, 40cm wide.Large locker: 90cm deep, 60cm high, 40cm wide.Max 24 hours (2007):Small: 3,30 euroLarge: 4,90 euroMaximum storage: 72 hours. After 24 hours you pay an extra 50% more per 24 hours, and 100% extra from 48-72 hours. That is on top of the daily rate. After 72 hours your luggage will be sent to Lost Items department in Utrecht. If there are no luggage lockers, you can leave your luggage with the 'bagagedepot' or at the Rijwielshop (bicycleshop) or Fietspoint (bicycle point) at € 5 per day or part of a day.

Bicycles - the way to go

by hen263

Numerous place rents bikes and for $7 USD ($5 Euro) it is well worth it. Amsterdam is a very bike friendly city and by biking around you get to see things you otherwise might not.Good for you, and fun. Also, you can see how many beers you can drink and still bike to your hotel without falling. Make it a contest with your friends.

Going Dutch

by CliffClaven

They reckon there are half a million caravans in the Netherlands. And from June to September the Dutch clog the highways of Europe as they fan out from their relatively small kingdom and meander through France and Germany to Austria, Spain and Italy. Dutch caravans have even been spotted in Moldova (you mean, there was another tourist there at the time to do the spotting!?). A word of warning: don’t toot your horn at a Dutch caravan. However small the caravan, the owner is always well over six feet tall and built like a Dutch barge.

Train taxi

by ATLC

The Train Taxi (Treintaxi) is a typically Dutch means of transport, which involves sharing a taxi with other passengers. The taxi will take you to and from one hundred plus railway stations at a reduced price. You pay a fixed price of Euro 4.20 per person, whatever the distance. Train Taxi tickets can be bought at NS ticket offices or ticket machines. You can buy a ticket from the taxi driver, but it is more expensive, at Euro 5.00.The Train Taxi covers a specific area only - you can check what this area is by looking at the information board by the Train Taxi pick-up point or look it up on the Train Taxi website. More information is available on the Train Taxi website. If you want to know where the train taxis go from your station of arrival, check this link (PDF).How it works (the PDF): If your destination is an address in the town where your station of arrival is, then the train taxi...

by smirnofforiginal

You may drive in the Netherlands if you are at least 18 years old and hold a full drivers licence. If you still have an old style UK licence you will need to keep your passpotr with you as I.D. You need to carry your vehicle registration documents and if you are not the rsgistered owner you must have a letter from them giving you authortiy / permission. Adequate insurance is a must and a green card is recommended. It is advised to have a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit - but not compulsory. It is compulsory to have headlight converters, visibility vest(s) and a warning triangle. The speed limits are : Urban 50kph Open roads 80 - 100kph Motorway 100/120kph

HOW TO GET INTO AMSTERDAM

by ATLC

Once you arrive at the airport Schiphol, you''ll go to retrieve your luggage of course. In that area (even before you go through customs) there is a train ticket vendor machine and a sign that tells you how to get into Amsterdam (Central Station). If you can't read it:Train, 15 minutes journey time, frequency every 10 minutes, one way approx. € 4.Taxi, 20 minutes journey time, frequency every 1-5 minutes, one way approx € 40.Airport Hotelbus, journey time 35 minutes, frequency every 30 minutes, one way approx € 10.Follow signs after leaving baggage hall.

Parking your car in cities

by ATLC

More and more chipcards are used in parking meters in larger towns. Be forewarned that if you want to park your car in some places (and in Rotterdam for certain), then the parking meters do not accept cash money, only chipcards. I'm not sure if chipcards are familiar to everyone. They are bank cards which you load with smaller amounts of money (for smaller things you would normally pay for in cash). Anyway, if you're not sure, park in a garage where creditcards, chip AND cash are usually accepted.Everything you need to know about parking in Amsterdam

All others tips already said how good are trains in Netherlands. My tip is for those want to practise with the new ticket vending machine which are with touch-screen.This machine sells Single and Return tickets, as well as 5 Return tickets, Treintaxi tickets, Weekend Returns and Railrunners. Single and Return tickets, 5 Return tickets and Weekend Returns can be undated or for a specific date, with or without discount, and, of course, be for 1st or 2nd Class. "Treintaxi tickets", "Weekend Returns" and "Railrunners" can be undated or for a specific date.Demonstration at link below, you've have just to use your mouse.Having some practice could be useful at airport and/or any railways stations. At Schiphol they can be found at the luggage reclaim areas.
