Public Transportation

by Magnum_P.I.

This place is the Mecca of Public Transportation. Everywhere was accessible by train, bus, tram, canal taxi and bike. Public Transportation is celebrated in the Netherlands unlike here in Canada. Not only is this a great way to see the Netherlands but it is also a great way to meet the people and fellow travelers.

The Dutch train system - purchasing tickets

by PKCass

The Dutch train system, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen or NS as it is commonly referred to, is a very safe and reliable way to travel almost anywhere in the country. Tickets are available from ticket booths (there's a small fee for this) and from machines in the stations. The machines are easy to use and provide instructions in Dutch, English, French, and German. Parts of the NS website are available in English, including a demonstration on how to buy a ticket from a ticket machine. There are different kinds of tickets available depending on time of day traveling, whether one is returning on the same day, etc. There are also 1st class (1e klas) and 2nd class (2e klas) tickets. Most people purchase the cheaper 2nd class tickets since train journeys in The Netherlands aren't that long. Be sure if you purchase the 2nd class ticket to board a train car marked as a second class car. Most of the...

Flying into the Netherlands

by jayhawk2000

Schiphol is a huge shopping mall where they happen to allow airplanes in the parking lot!We flew between Manchester and Amsterdam aboard Jet2, a decent no-frills carrier whose flights you can book on www.jet2.com.The plane taxied for ages after landing (half as long as the flight) and we wondered if we'd landed in Belgium and drove the rest of the way. Frequent trains leave the airport from directly beneath the terminal (see my TRAINS travel tip for more info). Before our return flight we had time to enjoy the many shops, cafes and even the free mini Rijksmuseum which had about a dozen Dutch paintings, including Steen and Mondriaan. These facilities are available only to air passengers travelling on the day and when shopping you have to show your boarding card.

Going by Ryanair

by Nalle_Bear

Going from Skavsta, - thats an airport 1,5 hours south of Stockholm, close to town Nyköping - to Dusseldorf (Weeze, close to town Niederrhein) was cheap. 5€ plus taxes = 30€ per person. As a nice proper bear I went for free sitting in travel-moms pocket.

Train travel is like a dream

by jayhawk2000

I suppose if you're living in a small, flat, rich country then running a train network is easy-peasy. So why aren't English trains so good??The trains were immaculately clean and have many carriages to prevent overcrowding. On intercity routes they use massive double-deckers like the one in the photo. You can use the excellent national rail website to plan itineraries and check prices, but there's almost no need as trains are frequent and reliable, plus fares are reasonable. When going from point to point, buy a single ticket to your eventual destination for the day. You are allowed to stop off en route and join a later train. The one nuisance about train travel is buying tickets. There are two types of ticketing machines, neither of which take Visa cards or notes. You either need enough coins or a Mastercard/Maestro credit or debit card (with a PIN).Going up to the counter to buy your...

The usage of the "strippenkaart"

by JulesRules

Until 2007 (expected date), in Holland we use the "strippenkaart" as a general ticket to get around in busses, trams and metro. The country and cities are devided up in "zones". For each zone you'll have to stamp two "strippen" (this is sometimes still confusing for Dutch people: "one zone? why don't I just stamp one "strip"?).A "strippenkaart" is available in blue and in pink. The pink ones are for children (up to 12 I think?) and elderly people, above 65.The "strippenkaart" is available in 15 and 36 "strippen".If you go far, you usely take the train and you don't use a "strippenkaart", but a regular train ticket, as in any country. But to travel within a city of by bus or metro from a village to a city or viceversa, you use the "strippenkaart"."Strippenkaarten" are available at "sigarenboeren" (tabac shops), at the selling points of public transport. Mostly not in supermarkets! When you...

The Netherlands by bus

by Nathalie_B

Not that trains are not running in this country, but strikes happen! Or sometimes it is simply impossible to get to a town/village by train. Then you only possibility is a bus. Since many buses pass through many different villages the cost of such a ride can be higher than by train. However, the competition still exists. During the summer from June to end of August, you may purchase a "Zomerwerfskaart" and travel by bus all day long for just 8.90 Euro. The only catch is that you can't use this card on the "Interliner" busses and will have to pay some extra fee (not too high though). This card is great if you want to explore some smaller cities and villages. You can travel from province to province getting on and off a bus and explore the unexplored. Similar cards exist per province as well. You can purchase them for about 4 Euro.Information about such discount cards can be usually found...

Maps are not free!

by Robin922

For those of you who are use to receiving free maps, don’t try at the Visitor Centers. As I understand the story, the once government centers are now privately ran. A local map town will cost 2 euros! However there is some good news, many hotels will give you a free copy of one for the town you are staying in. For other locations, you may wish to search the internet and print one. Of course you could always buy one and use it for a souvenir. ;-)

How to ride a train - and save money

by Robin922

One of the best ways to travel any distance is by train. Fast, clean, cheap, and most of all they run on time. If you would like to know how long and the cost of a trip they offer an easy to use website (English/Dutch). http://www.ns.nlIf you are you are planning to a cross county and make a few stops along the way. They offer an unlimited day ticket for 39.80 euro and for 5 euro more it will work on buses and trams too. If you like to sleep in a little and going to be taking a long vacation you can buy a off-peak pass for 49 euro. This ticket will allow up to 4 people to travel for 40% off normal rates & 50% discount at hundreds of museums. However your trip can not begin before 9am M-F.For those of you who have never traveled by train, make sure you are sitting in a car that says, “2” (second class). For domestic travel I can’t see a single reason for paying for a first class ticket....

Plane, train, tram, bike, bus or boat anything but

by Robin922

Plane, train, tram, bike, bus or boat anything but a car or taxi! The public transportation system here has been perfected. You can get most anywhere you want, with out the use of a car. While driving is easy, parking can be very tricky and expensive in cities. Taxies are very expensive, UNLESS you use the train/taxi system. In some cases you can use the cab at a fixed rate to go to & from certain places. The train system does have a website, that can tell you when, where and how much in Dutch or English.http://www.ns.nlHowever for the bus system it’s still better to ask, since they are one of the very few websites, that has not taken the time to offer any language except for Dutch.
