Rent a bike and be independent.

by wroclawiak

Discover Holland by bike. It's really a pleasure. It's convinient and cycling is very safe because of perfect bike road net. It's very cheap. I paid for 6,50 for the whole day and was able to visit every corner I wanted to.You can visit the whole country by bike. If you have not enough time you can go by train and rent a bike in the city you want to visit.

Go for a ride!

by jayhawk2000

Welcome to cycling heaven! The Netherlands was designed for biking around as it is flat and covered with cycle paths. Cycle paths, what am I saying? Cycle HIGHWAYS, more like! There are usually dedicated lanes on the streets, separate lanes running alongside roads and even multi-storey bike parks at train stations. Some bike paths have their own traffic signals and level crossings, but exercise the usual caution. I was surprised to see nobody wearing a helmet, but maybe that's how much faith they have in their integrated transport system! The rental bikes themselves aren't that comfy and only have the one gear. Plus, the Dutch are very tall people, so you may have trouble reaching the pedals! Though cycling is excellent for seeing a small town or some countryside, a long distance trip probably wouldn't be that interesting as the landscape is so monotonous. The Dutch never know the joy of...

The Banana Trains

by erik0240

The commutertrains that connects the dutch cities are bright yellow with a blue line. They´re often called "banana-trains". These trains are rather comfortable & also rather cheap to go by. A trip from the southern Netherlands to the northern parts takes about 1½-2 Hours. A ticket from Venlo (One of the most southern towns) to the capital - Amsterdam - costs around 25-30 Euros (2004). And to all you living on a tight budget:As usual when traveling public transportation; Acting really foreign & having the time to leave the train to take the next one WILL get you through the Netherlands for free. It just takes a bit longer :-)

One of the World's Great Rail Networks

by Paul2001

The Netherlands has one of the world's great rail networks. The trains here run frequently between major cities. They are very punctional and clean. The Netherlands is a small country so if you are centring yourself in Amsterdam you can easily reach any part of the country within 2.5 hours. In my opinion, although the Dutch may differ, the trains seem to operate like North American commuter trains. This is largely because of the frequent stops each train seems to make. Stopping 4 to 5 minutes at every town is quite common. In fact I wish the communter train network in Toronto (my home) was this efficient. Importantly all the major cities can be reached from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol via these trains. I actually based myself in the Hague when I visited the Netherlands, so this fact was very important and proved most helpful. If you are going to spending alot of time on the rails in the...

Transportation

by sammie

It depends on where you're from. But you can come to The Netherlands by airplane, bus, boat's (ferrys), Thalys, train and with your own car. This is our Citroën Xsara. The Dutch travel around by car, bike, scooter, brommer, on foot, tram, train, metro, taxi and by bus.It was a Dutch man who develped the bike, and we are the number 1 country in Europe with the most bicycles owned and used in traffic. We are also the number 1 country where you have the most chance that your bicycle gets stolen! The tram, bus, train and metro are public transportations and if you want to use them you have to pay for it. The taxi is the same as in every other country. In the bigger city's you can put your hand up, but in the smaller city's you have to call for a taxi.

Skating

by sim1

Just once in a couple a years it is possible to skate on the canals. When this was the case in the time I live in The Netherlands, I always went to the Province of Groningen. It was just perfect there because I could walk with my skates out of the house, and go directly on the ice. In this picture you can see me skating on the canal in Loppersum, the village where I used to live as a child.

Trains

by barryg23

In general I was very impressed with Dutch rail. After two days in Amsterdam we decided to explore the rest of the country and bought a return ticket from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. It all started badly as our train was first delayed and then cancelled. However once we finally got away there were no further problems. The best thing about our journey was being able to stop off at all the towns along the way to Rotterdam using the same ticket. The trains were very frequent and fast, though not amazingly clean.
