Then you're in for some heavy studying as Dutch is not an easy language to learn. An unconventional method, that does not use grammar or learning lists of words in the first place, but rather relies on a lot of speaking within the scope of your main interest (for instance if you're a student), is the Delft Method (Delftse methode). Developed by the Technical University of Delft, it was used to teach non-Dutch speaking students with the help of advanced computer software. Has been proven to be very succesful. Leave a Comment

by Nathalie_B If in every other country you have to watch the cars while crossing a road, here you have to watch for bicycles as well. As I already mentioned, Dutch are extremely nice people, but when they ride their bikes they simply don't see you. I haven't been living in the Netherlands for a long time, but already have seen a lot of accidents. So, watch out!!! Especially make sure that you're not walking on a bicycle path. Not only it is dangerous but also truly annoying for those who ride their bikes Leave a Comment

As of Jan 1st 2005 everyone is obliged by law to be able to identify themselves. If you don't have identification, you can get a fine of 50 euro, for 14 and 15 year olds the fine is 25 euro. If you refuse to show identification you can be taken to a policestation so that you can be identified. You may then risk a fine of 2250 euro. Government issued documents like passports or drivers license are official ID's. Creditcards or library cards are not. Read more here Leave a Comment

General rule of thumb is that you will have to order your dinner before 21 hrs. Best to check with the restaurant when you make reservations. When it says 'kitchen closes at 21.00 hrs' it means that first orders are taken up to that time. If your first order is taken, and you order other courses later (for example dessert) , that's usually no problem. Leave a Comment

ATLC CARICATURE by ATLC When a friend of mine was introduced to my Netherlands page he pointed out that the main Danger was not listed on this page: ME ! So he writes: Be aware that provoking this citizen is a hazardous activity. If confronted by this small Dutch person do not be unduly alarmed. Usually, offerings of small gifts such as chocolate or even large gifts of chocolate will render her entirely safe. What are friends for, eh? Leave a Comment Phone: -Website: - Other Contact: -

NETHERLANDS SMOKING by ATLC Since March last year, all cigarette packs, tobacco pouches and cigar boxes sport big warning texts about the dangers of smoking. At first this had the effect that everyone bought cigarette boxes, and also carton boxes were commercialised, to hide the texts. And stickers were sold with alternative, less threatening texts. But something else happened too. When people got used to it, they started collecting all the different texts. One of the favourites is: smoking affects the quality of sperm. This package shows the text: Smoking is lethal. From January 2004 the governement will take into effect a new law: every employee has the right to a smoking-free area. This also counts in restaurants and pubs although the rule will be valid there from January 2005. Effectively this means that there will be no smoking in restaurants and pubs from January 2005 although the discussion about putting this rule to use has only just begun. It also means that there won't be any smoking allowed in coffee shops. In any case: note that the law is not forbidding to smoke. The law is that every employee has a right to a smoke free workplace. NETHERLANDS MAXIMUM SPEED by ATLC When you cross a Dutch border by car you'll find this sign: 50 kms p/h inside suburb 80 kms p/h outside suburb 100 kms p/h on motorway 120 kms p/h on highway At 30 kms p/h over any speed limit your case may come before court. At 50 kms p/h over any speed limit your driver's license and car may be taken away. In general speeding tickets are about € 5 per km. too fast. Leave a Comment

Eating out is expensive in The Netherlands. A coffee will be 1,50 euro at the cheapest. An average lunch, sitting down, is about 10-12,50. Main courses in a simple restaurant (eetcafé, Italian or Chinese restaurant) start from about 15 euro. On a low budget (3-7 euro): Try falafel, turkish pizza's, shoarma, 'Surinaamse broodjes' (Surinamese food), erwtensoep (peasoup). Pannenkoeken (pancakes, savoury or sweet), usually 6-12 euro. Uitsmijter (bread, 2 or 3 fried eggs, cheese and ham) is about 8 euro. There are also numerous lunchrooms and takeaway sandwiches. These are about 2,50-3 euro. Not to forget Burger King or MacDonalds. Leave a Comment

Leave your bike at home by Nathalie_B It rarely snows here, but even if it does you won't have a chance to see the Netherlands dressed in white for a long time. If you happen to ride a bike when it snows, or when the snow still stays on the streets you must be very carefull. Remember that falling on the snowy, icey ground is not fun at all. Often, when there's no bicycle path you'll find yourself riding on the road and this is a real danger. Cars that drive behind you may not stop as fast..... Best thing to do is to leave your bike at home and wait till the snow melts (it won't take long). Instead you can always either walk or take a bus, it is much safer. Leave a Comment

Picture taken from my balcony (Breda) by Nathalie_B No idea how much money Dutch spend on fireworks every year, but I bet it is a couple of millions of Euros. Legally, all different types of fireworks (bottle rockets, firecrackers, sparklers, etc.) can be purchased in Holland between December 30th and January 1st. (if I rememebr right) However, Dutchies find the way to buy them earlier and already during the X-Mas many cities look like a war zone. Don't know what is the legal age for purchasing all these kinds of home fireworks, but it looks like every kid once learned to walk already knows how to use the "explosives". Unfortunatelly, many accidents happen because of misuse of these things! Be very carefull, if you happen to be in the Netherlands, especially in the cities!!! Personally, I didn't dare to go out on December 31st because those fireworks were everywhere. Even my balcony almost got on fire because my neighbors found buzz bombs and bottle rockets amusing.
