The truth about drugs

by ATLC

I will elaborate on Dutch Drugs Law a bit more in due time.Just realise that drugs are not legalised in The Netherlands. This counts for hard and soft drugs. Use is condoned as are coffeeshops. Every city decides for itself if it condones coffeeshops or not.People under 18 are not allowed in coffeeshops nor are they allowed to buy any drug including cannabis, mushrooms etc.Info in English

Locals

by the___gecko

The locals of Amsterdam are the most arrogant negative priks Ive ever encountered. Be prepared to be treated like ***. The energy of the city resembles that of Dark City from the movie. Yes the weed is good but buy some and then head for the country side where the people and atmosphere becomes more humane again.

Dutch "Invasion", beware, NO PHOTOS

by Martin_S.

Upon entering Hoenderloo, near the northeast entrance to the Hoge Veluwe (Kroller-Mueller) Park, we were descended upon by the entire Dutch Army in full uniform and looking for trouble.....as we passed this long column of armored cars, trucks, jeeps and tanks, the soldiers were constantly aiming their weapons at us. At one point they stopped and we could pass them to a point where we pulled off the road, from there took some pictures, but when a car began to drive toward us we took off...we for sure did not want to interfere with the Dutch Blitzkrieg Invasion Force.Being funny aside it was sort of scary to see soldiers actually raising and pointing their weapons at you. Having lived in Israel and been in wars, it is common to see weapons everywhere in Israel, but it is against all the rules to even raise a weapon or point it at someone. These Dutch soldiers did not look happy at all.

Track control

by tompt

Around the larger cities in the west of the Netherlands there are 80 km zones. On a strech of road it is not allowed to drive over 80km/h. This is indicated with lights above the road. Behind the lights there are cameras that measure your speed. This time not only at this poiny but also at the end of the stretch. The camera registers your arrival and your departure and calculates the mean speed. A mean speed of over 80 (after measure correction) will result in a fine on the doormat. These cameras are also working onother streches of road where your speed must be under 100 or 120.

Buying train tickets on train

by ultchuk

Since I'm a commuter and I saw recently how a foreigner got a heavy fine when travelling on the train with the wrong ticket, please take care of the following when traveling by train in the Netherlands. October 2005 last year the policy of the Dutch Railways (NS) has changed. When before one could buy a ticket on the train or sometimes you could explain why you couldn't buy a ticket in advance nowadays you always have to buy a ticket in advance or you will have to pay a 35 euro fine! That's also when you would be living in Holland and have a 40 % Reduction Card and you travel with it on the wrong time of the day. Before 9am there is no reduction and you will have to buy a normal and more expensive ticket. They won't accept whatever reasons you give. Also when you have a certain Train Card and left it at home. Just thought this could be important for foreigners when they intend to travel...

Pickpockets

by Robin922

Pickpockets can be anywhere, however many will pick easy targets. Tourists top the list! Any time you are in a crowded area or place known for tourism keep your guard up. Some places will even have signs to remind you, but nothing replaces common sense.

The Netherlands by car

by Nathalie_B

When you hear people saying that the Netherlands is a very safe country BELIEVE IT! Generally you'll never have problems walking alone on the streets, hanging out in bars, wandering in cities when its late and dark etc. But, like everywhere else you should remember certain things. If you happened to travel to or around the Netherlands by car make sure you don't leave anything valuable inside it when parking. The picture you see here was taken on a Spring Saturday morning in Breda. 6 or 7 cars in a row had broken side windows. It looked like the night before somebody was having "fun". Breaking into somebody's car is definitely not a typical Dutch custom, but it can happen everywhere. So just remember to be carefull.

There’s more to driving than reading signs!

by Robin922

Driving in the Netherlands is relatively easy. Roads are in good condition and signs are easy to read. However there are a few hidden dangers. First bike and bus lanes are very common. When making turns, it’s one more thing to look out for. Also don’t depend on signs to warn you of dangers. While I was out driving my little smart car, I could have easily ended up turning it into a boat. You will notice in the picture there is NO guardrail or sign. If you let your guard down for a moment you could end up swimming. By the way, that isn’t one of those cute little cannels but a one of the larger ones that barges use.
