If nature is not the strong point of the Netherlands, mountain lovers will have it very difficult here: a large part of the territory is under sea level and the highest point of the country reaches the amazing 321 m! at the very South tip of the country, in the border to Belgium and Germany. In general, the Dutch landscape is composed by a monotonous humanised plain crossed by canals, rivers and motorways.With a significant part of the territory under the sea level and artificially gained to the sea, high teads, floods and sea storms have always meant a severe threat for a large part of the population. A complex system of damms, canals and dijks, one of the major engineering works of mankind, protects these areas. In this picture you can see one of the most impresive dams in the country, located in the mouth of the Schelde river, in the region of Zeeland.
