Kongsberg Things to Do

  • New sculpture in Magasinparken

30th of june 2012 we got this new statue in our main park Magadinparken. The sculptures name is "ut av berget" which can be translated to "out of the mountain".The name probably has to do with Kongsbergs mining history and that the miners came out of the minesbefore christmas carrying a torch as they walked to town.See also the information about the...

  • Again about statues

It seems that the Norwegians have a hobby in collecting statues and installing them in the most unexpected places.I love this and the surprise to find in a strange place a statue was always bringing me a smile and a better mood for all day... Couldn't this be the reason to install them there?

  • King's Mine.. silver mine

As I have already said, I was one of the people lucky enough to take a dinner in that mine, 1070 meters bellow the surface, breathing silver dust mixed with almost 400 years of mining industry. I did this after an hour visit in some of it's galleries which are longer than 600 km.We have entered the mine as the miners did so many years before us, in...

  • The Church in Kongsberg

It is a must see of course, and I don't need to speak too much about it as I will attach here some nice links... enjoy them What they are not saying on all those sites is that, when I have been there, a very young man, almost a boy, was playing piano. It was perhaps Bach's Toccata but...I am not a connoisseur.Anyway, it makes my visit special and it...

  • Hiking up to the monument "Korset"

Korset (meaning the cross) is a monument of the place where The Danish king Chr IV stood when he pointed out where he wanted Kongsberg to be built way back in 1624. The story says that he was drunk when he pointed and really meant Kongsberg to be a little longer to the right(south) in the area of Sandsvær.Today Korset is a popular goal for hikers...

In Houston, Texas, (USA) Chinese restaurants are everywhere. I was almost astounded to find one in Kongsberg, Norway. I was pleasantly surprised by everything, and disappointed by nothing. The establishment is not large by US standards, but it is a very comfortable place to have a meal. The young man who waited on me spoke English adequately for...

Christians kjeller has concerts. It is often blues or country and local bands.
Popular place in Kirkegata in the quiet Vestsiden area. In the same house you have the restaurant Opsahlgården in the basement.

Christians kjeller is in the basement.

Kongsberg is an extremely safe place to be.
The only thing i can think of is the old silver mines. Do not cross the fence around the mines. The holes can be several hundered meters deep.

Fence around the mines and historical info sign.

Don't go there without a map or a brochure of things that you can visit in Kongsberg because it can happen that you have no chance to enter the tourist office. It happened to me!! I went there at 1 p.m. and the office was closed; strange because in Italy most of the offices stay open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

By the way this is the address of the tourist office, better to know it before arriving there!

  • The chimney sweeper

In our place it is well known that meeting a chimney sweeper is a clear sign of being very lucky. It is easy to understand why.To see in our times a real one on the street in the middle of the city, is certainly impressive, even if the city is in Norway, where the old wooden houses and the old traditions are still "on topic".I felt anyway very...

Kongsberg Favorites

  • Numedalslågen

A river is always an attraction point , the "something" to build a nice city around it. I have always appreciated this. In Kongsberg, that "concept" is reaching it's perfection. The river Numedalslågen have here three waterfalls, very impressive ones and the city is built around them.I could spend hours looking at the river and the mist arising in...

  • Along the river

When I went to Kongsberg I was alone and I had few hours to spend there so I miss to walking along the river. But I suggest to you to do it becasue I saw that there is a nice path all along the river , that starts close to the main bridge and takes a bit far from the center, I suppose is a quiet place for relaxing.

  • For who wants....

If you are not tired after a walk around Kongsberg you can reach the church of this town. The architect of Kongsberg Church was Joachim Andreas Stukenbrock, a mining foreman who led a committee formed in 1738 to provide a new and larger church to replace the earlier cross-shaped timber church from 1631. The foundation stone was laid down April 21,...
