    The new Melkoya

Melkoya was the land of the seaguls and now is the newest tourist attraction(!). It is all about the new LNG plant, the biggest one in Europe and the northernmost in the world.
You can have the best views from the hill in the vicinity.
This Statoil Project was completelly changing the life of the people up here. The area is flourishing again, like in the good old times.
I am happy to say that I was a part of that project for a while... enough to take a look over Finnmark and to start loving it.

Finnmark was a very important area for the german plans during the Second World War, especially for the fight against the Russian defence system. The germans have tried to stop the supply line from England to Rusia by placing in that area of the greatest german distroyers, Tirpitz and Shanrnhorst. The Norwegian ship Black Watch, was stationed in Hammerfest and together with the on-shore fortifications were dedicated to prevent any allied invasion on the north of Norway. One of those fortifications was placed here on Melkoya. It is still visible one observation point very well preserved on the north west of the island.

If you will catch the opportunity to go fishing in the small gulfs around Hammerfest you shall be happy for changing completely the point of view over the place. Do not try to live from fishing… it is just a story that the waters are full of fish :)
The experience suppose to be unique…just try it.

I have been surprised to found an... impeler in the vicinity of the Music Pavilion.
All the surprise has gone after I have read the information about it. It was installed here as a reminding that in 1891, the Hammerfest Council has built first Hydroelectric Power Station in Northern Europe.
We can say that this is indeed an "unique" monument... I hope that it will soon be included in the touristic programs, due to my tip here...

I have found it just by chance. For the Norwegians can be a good idea to take a look at the Library. I am sure that you will find there interesting books and who knows...perhaps some hidden treasures

Take the fast ferry to Ingoey

From Hammerfest you can take the fast ferry to Ingoey. Ingoey also has fast ferry connection to Havoeysund. Ingoey is located at 71 degrees north and have only 25 inhabitants. This is the place that has the worst weather in Norway with 285 days a year with strong winds. Accommodation should be arranged before you go, espesially in July and August. It's possible to arrange a trip to Fruholmen lighthouse. There is a pottery on the island, which are open during normal working hours. I recommend going there instead of going to North Cap. It takes some more planning and effort, but it is worth it. This is the end of the world and a real adventure.
